Chapter 26 The reading

Antony spent the day reading the book he had picked up in Marcus's library. He felt various emotions as he read the book, including the sadness that the lyrical self had felt.
Throughout the poems, he felt a deep sadness, the same as the lyrical self; he felt that if it hadn't been for Marcus, he would have committed a tremendous idiocy.
Tears streamed down his face, even though he didn't want them to. He suffered as he read the book, because he felt that if it hadn't been for the doctor who was helping him so much, he would have been seven feet off the ground. This question had popped into his head, making him wonder about countless possibilities, things he would do if he were finally alone, without Marcus' help.
Finally he came to his senses, because of a book, Antony could be considered crazy, but the truth was that this book had helped him with many issues, including seeing things that were cloudy in his mind, such as seeing that Cauã was actually a crazy psychopath, fond of Alan.
He thought of Alan, the teacher who had suffered the most at the hands of Cauã, who had fortunately managed to get rid of this madman who still wanted to hurt him.
He had to find a way of contacting Alan, either in person or via the Internet. He urgently needed to warn the teacher that his ex-husband was after him to hurt him, and that was why he had run away from him, getting under Marcus's car; as fate would have it, he was a doctor and had rescued him in time.
Now Antony believed that everything, exactly everything, was interconnected in the webs that Fate weaves somewhere in time and space...
The stories of their lives, everything, had already been written down, which frightened him to tell the truth, as everything had already been written down, meaning that nothing we do or fail to do is predetermined, that's crazy.
His thoughts, which were traveling in a world of possibilities, didn't notice that Marcus had already arrived and was watching him curiously.
Marcus didn't understand at first what Antony was doing with his favorite book in his hands. It was obvious that he was reading, but he didn't understand why An was in tears.
It's true that the poetry in this book is sad and melancholy, but in his opinion it wasn't meant to be, he thought Antony was exaggerating.
Seeing that he was surprised to see him there, Marcus came forward and said:
- You've chosen my favorite book.
- The title jumped out at me.
- You're certainly not normal.
- Says the mad doctor.
When he heard that sentence come out of the lawyer's mouth, he felt something at the moment that he couldn't say what it was. Marcus was looking at An like he was looking at a plate of succulent food.
Antony had noticed this look, he was slightly annoyed, he didn't understand what Marcus saw in him, but he knew that he wasn't one to throw things away, he was wearing a long green sweater, the fabric was a light sweatshirt, worn when it was neither too cold nor too hot to wear summer clothes, in fact the weather was completely crazy, he was also wearing pants of the same material and color, he was slumped in the armchair, with the book in his right hand, his index finger separating the page he was on.
He lifted his head to look into Marcus' eyes, as the doctor stared at him shamelessly. He really had no shame in his face, because even though Antony returned his stare, 'Marcus' didn't even hesitate to look away from him.
"What does Marcus see in me? Do I have a neon sign on my forehead saying: You can stare. I was made for this," An thought, laughing at himself. The scene was pitiful, he had just cried, his eyes were swollen and red from crying, his cheeks were like a bell bell pepper, so red they were pitiful to look at.
Marcus opened his mouth to start saying something about him 'Antony' crying and laughing at the same time, which was frightening to see, but An raised his arm to stop him from saying what he was going to say.
- Don't even start, Marcus.
Antony said resolutely.
- Why was he crying?
"What a stupid question," he thought with blood in his eyes.
- Have you read this?
Antony asked with genuine curiosity, returning Marcus' stupid question with an even dumber one.
- Of course, if it's my favorite book.
- I don't think so.
- Why not?
Antony's patience wore thin as Marcus opened his mouth to ask such inane questions.
- You don't look like you've read it because you're judging me so much.
- I'm not judging you. - Marcus said, stepping closer to An as if he was afraid of her reaction - I just wanted to understand why you were in tears.
- The poems in this book touched me.
- That's it?
- Yes.
- Who were you running away from the day you...
- You ran me over. - The lawyer finishes the sentence that the doctor was unable to complete, he settles back in his chair a little afraid to speak the truth - I was running away from Cauã.
