Chapter 15: Wicked Plot Count Roland of the Franks, a man consumed by ambition, had long set his sights on the throne. His desire for power and the hand of Princess Methuselah fueled his ambitions, leading him down a treacherous path. Within the towering walls of the Frankish castle, Count Roland plotted his next move. He paced back and forth in his dimly lit chamber, his mind ablaze with schemes and devious plans. One evening, as the moon cast an eerie glow on the castle's stone walls, Roland summoned his most trusted advisor, Sir Gervais. The knight entered the chamber with a bow, his loyalty unwavering. "Sir Gervais," Roland began, his voice dripping with menace, "the time has come to seize power, and Methuselah shall be mine, both as a bride and as a pawn in my game." Sir Gervais nodded, his eyes reflecting the sinister determination of his lord. "What is your plan, my lord?" Roland outlined his plot—a plan to destabilize the kingdom and discredit the royal family, thereby positioning himself as the only viable candidate for the throne. The key to his scheme was Methuselah. "Sir Gervais, I shall send a message to Methuselah, claiming that her people are in grave danger and that only by returning to her homeland can she save them," Roland explained, his lips curling into a wicked smile. The loyal advisor understood the gravity of the plan. "And once she is within our grasp, my lord?" Roland's eyes gleamed with malevolence. "Once she is within these walls, we shall orchestrate a staged abduction. The blame will fall upon the Vikings, and her return to the castle will be seen as a heroic act, solidifying her claim to the throne." Sir Gervais nodded, his allegiance unwavering. "A cunning plan, my lord." Meanwhile, in the Viking settlement, Methuselah had become an integral part of the community. Her presence had brought harmony and understanding between the two clans, and the bonds of friendship with Magnus had deepened into a love that neither of them could deny. One bright morning, as the sun bathed the settlement in its golden embrace, a messenger arrived with a scroll bearing the royal seal of the Franks. Methuselah, her heart racing with apprehension, unrolled the parchment and read the words written in her father's hand. "The kingdom is in grave danger, my dear Methuselah. Our people cry out for your return. Only you can save us from the impending catastrophe. Come home, for your kingdom needs you now more than ever." Methuselah's brow furrowed in concern. The message tugged at her heartstrings, invoking a sense of duty and responsibility. Magnus, seeing the turmoil in her eyes, approached her. "Methuselah, what troubles you?" She handed him the scroll, her voice trembling. "My people are in danger, Magnus. I must return to the Franks." Magnus read the message, his heart heavy with worry. "We will go with you, Methuselah. Together, we will face whatever challenges await." With the resolve to return home, Methuselah and Magnus gathered a group of Viking warriors. The journey would be perilous, but they were determined to stand by Methuselah's side. As they set sail towards the Frankish coast, the ominous clouds overhead seemed to foretell the turmoil that awaited them. Back in the Frankish castle, Count Roland and Sir Gervais watched from the shadows, their sinister plot in motion. "They are coming, my lord," Sir Gervais whispered, his eyes fixed on the approaching Viking longship. Roland nodded, his lips twisted in a malevolent grin. "Our trap is set. When the time is right, we shall strike." Methuselah and the Viking warriors disembarked on the Frankish shore, the air thick with tension and anticipation. As they journeyed towards the castle, the atmosphere grew increasingly ominous. Upon their arrival at the castle gates, they were greeted by Count Roland, who wore a facade of concern. "Princess Methuselah, I am relieved to see you have returned. Our kingdom is on the brink of disaster, and your presence is our only hope." Methuselah, trusting her father's words, stepped forward with Magnus and her Viking companions. "Tell me what has happened, Father. I am here to help." With a feigned sigh of relief, Roland embraced his daughter, concealing the malicious gleam in his eyes. "All will be revealed, my dear. But first, we must ensure your safety within the castle walls." As they entered the castle, the trap was set in motion. Unbeknownst to Methuselah, Magnus, and the Vikings, Count Roland's loyal men lurked in the shadows, ready to carry out their lord's devious plan. The stage was set for the staged abduction. In the dead of night, as the castle slept under the watchful eyes of the moon, Roland's men struck, overpowering the Viking guards and seizing Methuselah. A struggle ensued, and Methuselah was taken against her will, her cries echoing through the stone corridors of the castle. The Viking warriors, awakened by the commotion, fought valiantly to rescue her, but they were outnumbered and overpowered. Magnus, with a heart heavy with despair, watched helplessly as Methuselah was carried away. Count Roland emerged from the shadows, a wicked grin on his face. "Princess Methuselah," he declared, "you are a heroine returning to save your people. The Vikings will be blamed for your abduction, and your return will solidify your claim to the throne." Methuselah, her spirit unbroken, faced her captor with defiance. "You will not succeed, Roland. The truth will prevail." As Methuselah was taken deeper into the castle, her thoughts turned to Magnus and her Viking companions. She knew that they would come for her, no matter the odds. Back in the Viking settlement, word of Methuselah's abduction reached the clan. Magnus, his heart heavy with worry, rallied his warriors, determined to rescue the woman he loved and clear their name. The stage was set for a perilous showdown—a clash between ambition and love, treachery and loyalty, as Methuselah's fate hung in the balance, and the Vikings prepared to launch a daring rescue mission to free her from the clutches of Count Roland.
