As usual, I snuck out of the house using the front door. It's trickier this time because Papa's still awake, saying good night to the workers before they ride the transport to the terminal. It wasn't even after seven thirty when they started to send off the transport, so I had to improvise my way of sneaking out to the transport where Carlo, Samuel, Jose, and Castor rides. To make my escape a success, I had to wear clothes that I don't usually wear. An outfit that is not familiar with Papa's, Gabriel's, Felix, and even the workers. One where they won't point at me and say, "Where the hell are you going, Antonia?" After I made clear with my observation that it is the safest time to walk towards the transport, I tried my best to look normal. People will only notice if I did something extra. Jose immediately saw me when I started walking towards the transport, and when I reached the transport, they pulled me up and seated me between Samuel and Carlo. "You said after seven thirty?" I asked. Instead of Carlo, Jose responded. He seems to be the most talkative one. "This really happens sometimes." I nodded. There are two transports going the same way as our transport. Each transport carries six men, while our transport carries seven. The seventh is me. "All of you are from Pililia?" I asked. Jose nodded. "Yes. We cannot lose our jobs here. It is important to have money inside Pililia." "For what?" "To bribe them. Sometimes, they find out about the passages, and we bribe them not to tell their Komando about it. If they ever tell Komando about it, we will not see another that--- and that's for sure." "I agree. I heard that Komanda is a really tough guy. He is not one to be given up by small bribes. You need to be with the law or above it on order to please him. In that case, we don't have any chance of surviving if he knew. Even our family. That's why we try so hard to be safe in and out." Carlo explained. With that information, I thought that my guardian angel was the one who convinced me to bring all the money I had saved that was supposed to be for seeds for the garden. We're all quiet while we approach the public garden. There is someone standing at the entrance of the public garden. I thought it was authority, but it's one of us. "Heads down." Carlo carefully pushes my head down. I couldn't see what was going on, but it felt like an eternity until I was allowed to sit straight up, and when I did, we were inside what appeared to be a garage, but it was empty except for the transport and us. "This is it. You're inside Pililia now. " Carlo whispers. A man with a gun hanging around his shoulder approached us. "Who is she?" He pointed at me. "She'll pay you if you're quiet about this." Jose responded. The man nodded and led us to a tunnel where it brought us to where the houses are located. There were no other people outside of their houses. All lights are closed except for the lit candles inside each of the houses. When I saw another man with a gun around his shoulder, I ducked. Carlo pulled me back up. "It's okay. He knows. You must remember their faces. They are our buddies here." He advised. We walked quietly for a few minutes and randomly stopped at the end of a line of houses. Carlo pointed me towards the house beside the wall. "That's it." "What's it?" "Where Aron lives." I felt a rush of excitement that suddenly turned into fear when I asked myself, "What if he is upset that I got him fired?" "What if he thought that I hadn't defended him enough?" Carlo taps my shoulder. "Is there a problem?" "I'm just nervous." "I'm going to knock now. We need to be inside before their other men go for a walk." I nodded. Carlo started to knock. It's been a minute but there's no answer. If there is no one inside, what about the lit candles? Are we in the wrong house? No! Carlo's too young to have a poor memory. My heart stopped when I heard the floor creaking from inside the house. And when the light moved closer and closer to the door, the script I had made vanished faster than a lightning bolt. Should I just stand here when he opens the door? Should I say something? Carlo looks at me with a smile. A teasing one. "Here he comes." I took a heavy breath when the door moved. And when it opened, instead of excitement, I was confused when I saw someone with the lower part of their shirt previously ripped. A woman.
