Vol 2 Chapter 2 Darkness of the Mind #3

Jackson: “Phew. That was tiring.”
Jake: “Can’t agree more.”
The two went to grab lunch, with Jake always treating him to it.
Jackson: “Thanks for the food….Like man, you always treat me to lunch or dinner. You hit the lottery or something?”
Jake: “Nah, I just….run a small business…online.”
Jackson: “Wow….Good for you….”
Jake: “So how’s the….church you staying at?”
Jackson: “It’s decent….Like….Some labour around the area….Keeping the place clean….Fixing what needs to be fixed….All and all….It’s not too bad….Plus, they don’t mind me…using my powers…Besides…..I don’t have an….education or identity here…anyways…”
Jake: “We should…probably….talk…after we….finish eating….”
Jackson: “Sure.”
After the two finished their meals, they chatted at Jake’s house.
Jake: “Want something to drink?”
Jackson: “Yes, please.”
Jake poured two cups of lemon tea and brought them to the table.
Jake: “Here.”
Jackson: “Thanks.”
Jake sits on the couch and turns on the television. Jackson insisted that Jake change the channel to the news channel; Jake then turned the channel to the news.
Reporter #1: “Hello, and welcome to Daily News Network. We are here today to discuss the sudden drop in the crime rate here in Lascot, Moye, and other parts of the world. Sightings have shown a dark figure wearing a hoodie and a mask behind this. No one truly knows who this figure is and his motives. All we know is that he is making this place safer one day at a time.”
Reporter #5: “Pardon me, but don’t you think this dark figure is dangerous?”
Reporter #1: “And why that?”
Reporter #5: “Because he single-handedly took down so many criminals, yet he was never caught once.”
Reporter #1: “As long as he protects our country, I do not see him as the villain. Now then, yesterday, one of our reporters had told us about a murder case that took place in a motel.”
Reporter #7: “I’m down at Seattle Motel, where there has been a murder involving four men. The police are investigating the scene right now as we speak….Officer, tell us more about this murder case.”
Police Officer #1: “Four men were killed; each of them either had a crushed skull or a dent in the chest. They were entirely killed on the spot; we also found some bruises on some of their necks and legs; they were finger marks.”
Reporter #7: “And what type of person could’ve done this?”
Police Officer #1: “That, we are not sure. We only know that whoever is responsible for this is also responsible for calling us to the scene.”
Reporter #7: “Could it be the figure of the night?”
Police Officer #1: We are not sure about that. But there’s a greater chance that it was the dark figure that committed these murders.”
Jackson: “Damn, that guy must be brutal as fuck.”
Police Officer #2: “Captain, we found some hostages in the building. It seems that the people who were murdered were human traffickers.”
Reporter #7: “That will be all from me.”
Reporter #1: “Well, there you have it, folks; even though it was gruesome, the dark figure still saved the day or night. That’s all for today. See you tomorrow.”
Jackson: “So there’s another being with powers?”
Jake: “Probably.”
Jake switches the channel to a different one. He then got up and took the two empty cups to the kitchen to wash. When washing the cups, Jake hallucinates a dark figure of his own taunting him.
?: “You will never succeed in protecting everyone. You are still far too weak. You failed to save everyone from dying during the incident, and you failed to protect your mother. You will never fulfil the promise that you’ve made to your parents. YOU CAN NEVER STOP CHAOS FROM HAPPENING.”
Jackson: “Jake….JAKE?”
Jake then snaps out of his hallucinations. Jackson then walks towards the kitchen, standing by the kitchen counter.
Jackson: “You OK there? You zoned out for a bit just now.”
Jake: “I’m fine. So what did you want to say to me?”
Jackson: “I was just about to say I was returning to the church. And I wanted to say goodbye before leaving.”
Jake: “OK, sorry about just now.”
Jackson: “No worries, see you tomorrow.”
Jake: “See you tomorrow as well.”
The world was slowly free from chaos; crime dropped significantly as no one dared to commit one, fearing what might happen to them. On the other side, Jake did not feel any joy from doing all of this, it felt wrong to kill. But he was too far down the rabbit hole; he had slowly become a slave to himself, his mental health was worsening day by day, and he began to distance himself from everyone, including Jackson, his best friend. Night by night, more and more cases of murdered criminals began to spiral, with each death more brutal than the other. Jake no longer needed the money; his only goal was to free this world of chaos. During training times, Jake would also forget that Jackson was there. Jake would suddenly stop and stare into the distance, muttering silently.
Jackson: “Jake? Jake… are you OK?”
Jake shakes his head to get out of his trance-like state.
Jake: “I’m fine. I’m going to go home early today to rest.”
Jackson: “OK….See you tomorrow, I guess.”
Jake remains silent; he flies back home, leaving Jackson alone at the training grounds.
Jackson: “I have a bad feeling something is happening to Jake again. What could it be, though?”
Jake, upon reaching his home, had a sudden pain in his arm, he hurriedly went to the bathroom to check it out, he took off his clothes and saw something….his right arm had formed small dark spots. Jake looks back at the mirror, only to see himself….laughing at him.
