Vol 2 Chapter 3 Breakneck #2

The alarm rings, and Jake presses the button on the alarm clock to dismiss it; sitting up, Jake stretches his body before getting ready for work. Right as Jake was about to leave his house with a slice of bread with peanut butter and chocolate in his mouth, Jackson came by to congratulate Jake on getting a job. At the same time, Jackson brought a small box filled with a dozen apples.
Jake: "What's this?"
Jackson: "Oh, the church has an apple farm nearby. I was helping with the harvesting, and the priest told me to give you a dozen apples as a small thanks."
Jake: "Thank you, but why is the priest thanking me?"
Jackson: "Oh, the priest saw the news of how you defeated your imposter self and saved numerous lives, including freeing the souls that he had consumed. And yes, the priest saw the souls ascend to heaven one by one after your imposter self was killed."
Jake: "Nah, there's no need to thank me. I'm just here to protect the world. Plus, I don't deserve them. I kinda failed to save a lot as well."
Jackson: "C'mon, look on the bright side. If you weren't there and you let that mother fucker take over your body, the world would've ended in a blink of an eye. So cheer up. It's not your fault, nor my fault, for being unable to save everyone."
Jake: "It's just a bit hard to accept it. But we must accept that we can't save everyone."
Jackson: "Next time, if something like this happens, we'll try to save everyone."
Jake: "Heh. Let's try our best to be greater heroes then."
Jake fist-bumps Jackson, and he then waves goodbye to Jackson. Jake flies towards a place in Downtown Landford; he lands and continues on foot. Upon reaching the automobile workshop, he was greeted by one of the employees, Matthew. He grabbed a uniform from the store room and gave it to Jake, telling him to change. Once Jake changed into his uniform, Matthew showed Jake around, teaching him how to do repairs and problem-checking. The day goes by, and Jake learns the fundamentals of servicing cars. Although he wasn't doing great on the first day, Matthew cheered him up, saying that no one did it right the first day either. After a day of hard work, it was time for Jake to clock out; Jake changed into his regular clothes, said goodbye to Matthew, and returned home. The next day, the cycle continued. It had continued for almost 2 weeks, and Jake was slowly getting the hang of it. He was getting good at repairing and could practically figure out any issues said to him in an instant. He worked so fast that he almost had almost half his shift as free time. Matthew slowly grows in respect for Jake, treating him like a brother. Sometimes, Jake would have lunch with Matthew; other times, Jackson would pass by and join them. Every day during work, when there were no more customers, Matthew and Jake would sit down and begin a conversation about almost anything.
Mr. Jones looks out his office window and sees them chatting; he can't help but smile. Another week passed, days were busy, and no crime was being committed. It was peaceful for Jake. Working till 5, sometimes even doing overtime. It just felt typical for Jake. One day before closing, Matthew asked Jake if he wanted to clear up an abandoned storage room in the back tomorrow so they could make it a small hangout area.
Jake: "Hell, yes, but can we do that?"
Mr. Jones, at just the right moment, overheard the two boys talking as he closed the shop shutters.
Mr. Jones: "Sure you can. Just make sure you're not slacking in there during working hours."
Jake and Matthew high-fived each other in excitement. The two went on their way back home after that.
Jake and Matthew began cleaning up the storage room after they had finished their work, Box after box, dustpan after dustpan carrying garbage. Jake and Matthew had finally cleared up the room. They began drafting an outlay for the room.
Jake: "Wanna do some DIY for the furniture? There's a forest near where I live, and I see many people cutting them down and regrowing them."
Jackson: "Sure, I'll get my tools then."
Jake: "Great then. See you tomorrow."
Jackson: "You too."
The two got home and began preparing for their hangout room.
Matthew drove and stopped by Jake's house during the weekend; Jake invited Matthew inside to have a drink, and after a chat, Matthew grabbed an axe from his trunk, giving Jake one of them. They then walked towards the forest to cut down a few trees. Chopping one after another, they slowly but surely reach the amount of wood needed. Chopping down the last two trees, Jake was unknowingly standing right on the x-mark where the tree was about to fall once Matthew had fully chipped the tree away to make it fall. Matthew walked to the side and saw Jake standing where the tree was about to land. Matthew shouted at Jake and ran towards him in the blink of an eye; Jake was pulled aside in an instant before the tree could hit him.
Matthew: "You good?"
Jake: "Yeah, I'm good. Thanks."
Matthew: "You're welcome."
Jake: "Welp, let's return these logs to my house."
Matthew: "Norman, I'm afraid we would have to part ways forever. You've discovered the truth about me. And you'll only pose a threat to both me and you."
Matthew reaches into his pocket, pulling out a metallic cylinder device. Holding directly at Jake, Matthew takes out a pair of goggles that completely block out light but leave an outline of the person.
Jake: "Is that a Neuralyzer?"
Matthew: "It was nice knowing you."
Jake: "Woah. Eh, we can talk about this."
Jake closes his eyes, blocking them with his hands. Suddenly, Jake could not move; his hands slowly lowered, and his eyes were forced to open against his own will. Jake asked Jarvis if it was his doing, only for Jarvis to say he had no clue what was happening.
Matthew: "Goodbye, Jake."
A bright flash emits from the device with a click of a button. Flashing Jake and blinding him momentarily. Jake regains control over his body. He places his hands on his eyes, rubbing them.
Jake: "MY EYES!"
Matthew took a step back. He began questioning if the Mind Wiper was broken or if it was something else. Jake rubbed his eyes for a while. He slowly opened them, and his vision returned.
Jake: "God, that was so unpleasant. Also, what was that for?"
Matthew: "You're not supposed to remember anything, let alone the moment you were flashed. How is this possible?"
Jarvis: "Allow me to explain your little question."
Matthew: "Who was that?"
Jarvis: "The watch. And for your information, you aren't erasing Jake's memory when I'm around. "
Jake: "You can prevent memory wipes?"
Jarvis: "I'll explain it to you later."
Matthew started taking a few steps back, fearing what might happen to him and that they'd take revenge. Matthew turns away and runs back to Jake's house. Jake blinks for a second to see Matthew gone.
Jake: "Shit, I hope he doesn't get the wrong idea."
Matthew got into his car and drove off, leaving Jake's house almost instantly. On the other hand, Jake was left alone in the forest; Jake sighed and began hauling the logs back home.
