Chapter 10

When I regained my consciousness, I saw Zayden sitting beside me. The bandaid on my finger was removed.
Did Zainea successfully explained things to him? Why is he so silent? Silent, but he seems mad... and sad?
He laughed like a crazy one.
“Look me in the eyes,” he said.
Although confused, I look directly in his eyes. I was surprised. Those look, it's different from earlier. What did they talk about? Did they fight? I didn't know, a Zayden Constello can be sad too.
The side of his lips went up. “Right. Zainea won't look at me with those eyes. Calais, right?” He seems convinced.
“What... What do you mean?”
“So, right at this moment, I'm talking to Calais Ruscitti?” I nodded.
“Then why are you there, not in your own body?”
His eyebrows almost meet.
Good. Letting Zainea out appears to be helpful. He's starting to believe it.
“I know, I know. This is insane, but believe me. We really are sharing the same body. We both met in a car accident. We nearly bumped into each other's car. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side that night, so I fell off the cliff. That's the reason why my body is lying on that bed. And by the time I woke up, I'm now in Zainea's body. I also don't know how I end up in this situation.”
He closed his eyes then massaged the bridge of his nose.
“You might think that I'm blurting nonsense things here, but that's the truth. We kept the accident from the public because we don't want to destroy Zainea's image and be accused of something she didn't do. As for me, well, you might have a conclusion on that one too.”
“The one I talked to, before you was Zainea?”
“Yes. She's also in this body.”
“No wonder. Her eyes are full of resentment. I understand that.” He grinned. “I thought you're just being weird when you said that you want to go home to China. This explains everything.”
“Oh? I said that? When? But anyway, this is great. You can now determine who's who. So, what about me? What can you see? What can you see in my eyes? Huh?”
“Silliness.”
“Ha! Funny. You're the silly one here.”
“Why did your sister tell that you went on a vacation? Is she the one who caused your accident? Is that why you're questioning her like that? You're cornering her.”
“Finally, we're on the same page, Mister Constello. You got it all right. To answer you, yes. I don't have an evidence that she's the one behind my accident, but I'm very much sure that she is. No one else can do this to me, aside from her. Caileigh surely knows that I'm still alive, so she's back. Aside from the contract she's aiming to get from you, she's after my life. I heard it all.”
He looked at me seriously. Very serious that I can't even look at his eyes.
“Who else knew about the accident?”
“Only seven people: you, me, Megan, Zainea, her father, Doctor Reyes, and the old maid working at Amadeo's house. I don't know if Zainea told Zerro about this. About me being in Zainea's body, it's only the four of us: Zainea, Megan, and us.”
“The one I met in that elevator—”
“It was me. It was also me who attended the wedding.”
“You?” I rolled my eyes when he asked that.
“What? Why? Something wrong? Don't worry, okay? Although it was me, Zainea is still your wife. Her name was the one written and registered on that certificate of marriage, not mine. ”
Psh. Is marrying me a sin?! Am I not pretty enough to meet his standards?!
“Why are you telling me all of these now?”
I show him a faint smile.
“I thought there is no need to tell you these, but no. I need your help and only by telling you the truth, can make me move without being suspicious. You won't have any doubts about my intention. I don't intend to ruin anything, your relationship or your life. I only need your support and protection, Zayden.”
About my situation, there is still no progress.
“I just want you to do me favor before I leave the world.”
Maybe this is what I have to do before I go. Make things right, and put them back on their right places. Maybe that's my unfinished business, so I didn't cross the bridge of afterlife.
“What is it?”
“Stop Caileigh from her plan and return the ownership of Ruscitti Enterprise to my father.”
The door opened. Megan entered.
“How is the explanation going?” she asked.
“How is her condition?” Zayden asked instead.
“Calais' condition? No progress. No one knows if she'll wake up or not. But don't worry, Doctor Reyes went to a conference in USA to study her condition more. He's doing all his best to save Calais.”
Megan didn't get any reply from him after she said that. Zayden was drown in his deep thoughts.
I went to Megan.
“What happened? Why did you suddenly decide to say these to him?” She spoke in a whisper.
“I met my evil sister just now.”
“Oh? How was it?”
“She's sending someone to look for me, dead or alive. I accidentally heard that she really wants me dead.”
Her eyes went big, and her mouth formed an O.
“She's gone mad. Did you do anything that upsets her? Why does she want you dead?”
“I don't know. Look at me. Am I a b-bad person, Megan?”
“No! Of course not! I only met you for days, but I can say that you're a good person, Cal. Come to think of it, if you're not, you might have claimed Zainea's life and pretend as her without telling others about this. You would not take the risk to go and meet Zerro for Zainea's sake.”
I pinched both of her cheeks. She complained while massaging those.
“Your encouragement works. Thank you. Gosh, Megan. My heart is beating fast because of you. What if I marry you after I go back to my body?”
She gave me a disgusted look.
“No freaking way. Are you a man? I better work as a nun if I were to marry another woman. Ihh. No.” She robbed her arms.
“Psh. A piece of advice, Megan. You better see yourself out before I kick your ass.”
She laughed. “I know who're you going to marry, silly.” She diverted her gaze to Zayden who is now closely looking at my sleeping self as if he's studying it.
“Crazy.”
She sticks her tongue out. “I know that kind of look.”
I closed my eyes. “What look are you saying?”
“Gee, I'm done here. I don't talk to people who are in denial. Comedown after you're done talking. The foods are ready.”
“What?” I asked when I saw her still standing in front of me.
She winked then whispered, “You like him.” She let out a loud laugh while walking out.
“That's not true! Stop that! I might really end up in that situation! Gosh.”
Please, I just want to live peacefully if I survive this. If not, okay. Rest. Eternally.
Silence filled the whole room when Megan left.
“Uhm. So...”
“I'll help you, in one condition.”
“Sure! Deal. What is it?”
“Don't tell this to the other soul inside you, and find out where Zerro is.”
-----
10 o'clock in the evening, I'm still fully awake. We—no, it's only me—came home at 8 o'clock after having a conversation with Megan. It was a great talk, so I didn't notice the time while Zayden left after we ate. Work. He's a busy man after all.
Now, I'm reading the script of Zainea's new drama series. It's a story of a husband and wife who are struggling with their marriage. The man's having a secret affair with her wife's best friend.
Psh. So my role here is a martyr wife. Should I ready my eyes? I'll be crying every now and then.
“Oh, you're home. I thought you're going to spend the night at your office.”
Zayden removed his coat and loosened his necktie.
What kind of work is he doing that he comes home this late? Tsk. Tsk. Thank goodness, I am not one of his employees or else I might have an overtime work. He's so workaholic.
He gave me a paper bag then sat on the sofa in front of me.
“Is this for me? What's in it? Ohh. So kind of you, Constello.” A present? Why is he suddenly giving me one?
It's a phone. The latest edition.
“Call me once you met Zerro.”
Oh, right.
I don't like to agree with his condition because I don't want to cause any more mess, but I gave it a second thought. As long as Zainea is sleeping inside, I won't have to meet Zerro. No one will know his whereabouts, especially Zayden. I know he's using me as a bait for Zerro to appear, but I won't let him succeed. I don't have any clue why he's searching for Zerro, so pretending to help him find his brother is what I can do.
When I scanned my contacts, I saw only his number.
“He's going to contact either you or Megan. I'm warning you, if you don't tell me everything, you won't get a help from me.”
“I know. I clearly heard your threat. So, can you please have your rest upstairs and leave me here alone? You see, I'm busy memorizing my lines for tomorrow's first scene. Shoo.”
“Stop talking at me with that kind of tone. I hate it.”
“What tone? This is my normal tone. I just speak loudly.”
“Then lower down your voice. I'm not deaf.”
“Wow.”
Psh. He's so problematic.
I gave him a smile. A sweet one. “I'm sorry, dearest husband. Okay, from now on, I'll gently speak to you. So, how's work?”
“Creepy.” My smile faded away when he said that.
“You're creepier! You don't know how to smile genuinely!” I took the script and phone. “Grr. Have a bad night sleep!”
“Calais.”
I stopped from taking another step when he uttered my name.
Hearing my name from his mouth is sort of different. I feel like it's the most beautiful name I've ever heard.
He took a yellow paper from his pocket and gave it to me.
“What is this?”
He just shrugged and walked upstairs.
I opened the paper.
“Put that under your pillow. Guard your soul properly. It might wander while you're sleeping. I don't you to be entering into another's body. That will be a problem.”
“Curse you!” I throw him the script, but he caught it.
It's a talisman! Why would I need that?! I am not yet dead! I'm not a resentful ghost! My soul just entered into a wrong body!
