Chapter 12 Do we connect?

On a sunny morning, Emily and Sara were busy with their activities when they realized it was Oliver's veterinarian appointment day. Unfortunately, they were too busy to accompany him, and it worried them.
Sara grabbed her phone and called Carlos. "Carlos, could you do us a huge favor? We need to take Oliver to the vet, but we're in the middle of something important. Could you take him and keep us updated?"
Carlos readily agreed, as he adored Oliver and wouldn't hesitate to help. He drove to their house, and after a brief conversation, headed to the veterinary office with Oliver happily sitting in the back seat.
Upon arrival, Oliver was examined by a friendly veterinarian, Dr. Miranda. Carlos, attentive during the appointment, was impressed by her professionalism and the affectionate way she treated Oliver.
"Your dog is in great health. Keep up with vaccinations and maintain a balanced diet," advised Dr. Miranda.
"Absolutely. Thank you so much, Dr. Miranda. Oliver is very special to us," responded Carlos, appreciating the doctor's attention and care.
Dr. Miranda had deep brown eyes that reflected her passion for her profession. Her dark hair was tied in a practical bun, but strands escaped, seemingly challenging order. The badge on her white coat revealed her name and specialty.
While Oliver received medical attention, Carlos and Dr. Miranda started talking about other things. They discovered a mutual interest in outdoor activities and science fiction books.
"I love exploring trails and camping on weekends. It's a great way to escape routine," commented Carlos.
"And I love reading about alternate universes and technology. It makes me travel without leaving my place," said Dr. Miranda with a smile.
The conversation flowed naturally, and Carlos became increasingly impressed with Dr. Miranda's passion and knowledge.
"Carlos, you seem to be an animal lover. Do you work with something related to them?" she asked, intrigued.
"Actually, I'm an engineer. But I love animals and have always had a special connection with them," replied Carlos.
As the conversation continued, both realized a unique connection, sharing stories and laughter. Time passed quickly, and Oliver's appointment came to an end.
"If you need anything else, don't hesitate to call. It was great talking to you, Carlos," said Dr. Miranda with a friendly smile.
Carlos thanked her and bid farewell. He returned with Oliver after the vet appointment, but he didn't share any news with Emily. The little dog was excited and seemed to be in perfect agreement with Dr. Miranda, which relieved Emily and Sara.
Emily, eager to know how everything went, picked up the phone and called Carlos. "Carlos, how was the appointment with Oliver? Is everything okay?"
Carlos smiled upon hearing Emily's concern. "Everything is great; Oliver is perfectly healthy. Dr. Miranda said he's a very happy dog."
Emily laughed at Carlos's enthusiasm. "That's wonderful! And Dr. Miranda? How was she?"
Carlos pondered for a moment before answering, smiling slightly. "She's an exceptional professional. She seems genuinely passionate about what she does and has a great approach with animals."
"That's good to hear! I'm happy to hear that," said Emily. "Did you talk about anything else?"
Carlos hesitated for a moment but decided to be honest. "Yes, we talked about our interests in outdoor activities and science fiction. She's very interesting to talk to."
Excited, Emily encouraged, "You should invite her for a walk with Oliver one of these days. It would be a great way to thank her for taking care of our dear dog."
Carlos considered the idea and agreed, imagining it could be an opportunity to develop this unexpected friendship.
Meanwhile, Oliver barked as if contributing to the conversation, giving his approval to what he heard.
"Oliver seems to agree with you, Emily. I think we'll do that soon," said Carlos, laughing.
Emily smiled on the other end of the line. "Great! Oliver is the best dog, and you, Carlos, are the best friend. Thank you for everything."
Carlos felt a wave of gratitude and warmth hearing those words. "I'll always be here for you. Love you."
The conversation continued, full of laughter and stories, a moment when life seemed simple and beautiful, with bonds of friendship and love connecting everyone—humans and animals—in an affectionate fabric of joy and understanding.
Carlos decided to follow Emily's advice and invite Dr. Miranda for a walk with Oliver. He thought it could be a pleasant way to thank her and, at the same time, an opportunity to get to know her better.
Days later, he called the veterinary clinic and, with a slight nervousness, asked to speak to Dr. Miranda. Upon hearing her voice on the phone, Carlos composed himself and extended his invitation.
"Hi, Dr. Miranda. This is Carlos, Emily and Sara's friend, whose dog, Oliver, you recently attended. We wanted to thank you and would like to invite you for a walk with Oliver in the park this Saturday. What do you think?"
There was a brief pause before Dr. Miranda responded. "Carlos, what a charming idea! It would be a pleasure to meet Oliver and spend time with all of you. I accept the invitation joyfully."
Carlos felt immense relief and joy at the positive response. "Great! We look forward to Saturday. Let's meet at Central Park at 10 a.m. Oliver can't wait to meet you."
They sorted out the details of the meeting and hung up the phone. Carlos felt a mix of nervousness and excitement for what Saturday would bring.
On the morning of the meeting, Carlos, Emily, Sara, and Oliver prepared to go to the park. Carlos had butterflies in his stomach, but the support and enthusiasm of his friends reassured him.
Upon arriving at the park, they spotted Dr. Miranda in the distance, smiling warmly. Oliver, excited, ran towards her.
"Oliver seems very happy to see you, Dr. Miranda," said Carlos.
She affectionately petted Oliver. "The feeling is mutual, Oliver. I'm looking forward to spending time with all of you."
The walk unfolded in a light and relaxed manner. They talked about common interests, life, and, of course, Oliver, who stole the show with his antics.
At the end of the walk, as the sun was setting, Carlos felt it was the right time to suggest something more. Gathering courage, he said, "Dr. Miranda, it's been a very special day for all of us. We'd love the opportunity to share more moments like this. How about having dinner with us next week?"
Dr. Miranda smiled, accepting the invitation with a twinkle in her eyes. "It would be a pleasure, Carlos. I'm looking forward to it."
And there, on a simple walk with the adorable Oliver, a new connection began to form. Carlos was excited to see what the future would bring. Life, full of surprises and unexpected encounters, had a unique way of surprising us, showing that love and friendship can emerge in the most unlikely places. Later, in a moment of camaraderie, Dr. Miranda advised, "Carlos, take it slow. Let time guide things. I'm excited for dinner and getting to know you better." Carlos agreed, thanking the veterinarian for her wisdom. And so, that special day ended, leaving a promise of new beginnings in the air.
