Chapter 41: Distance

Samantha stopped meeting his gaze. There’s something brewing between the lines that exist in them. She suddenly let out a sigh. “I want to feed him. Is it okay?” She asked. Distracting herself from staring at his eyes.
Gregory remained unmoved. He stared at her. Before he then looked at the horse. “Want to give him a treat? This gal right here loves carrots.” He told her.
“Did Uncle Marcus tell you that?” She asked him. She saw how he nod his head. She mimicked the same movement too. She stared at the horse before her eyes went to Gregory. She ran out of words to say. Her mind couldn’t help her say anything this time around. She wanted the conversation to flow with ease but she was afraid she’ll say something out of context that will probably blur the line of the talk.
“Sam, you can feed him.” He stated calmly. He was literally staring as if he is searching through her face.
Samantha was silent. She felt the need to walk away. This is something that isn’t healthy for her anymore. Her heart’s been making abnormal beatings. The paces were sometimes hollow, sometimes its fast and it’s happening when she was with him.
“Sam…” His tone change. He was worried. His expression says it all. His eyes displayed the worry he felt for her silence.
“I think…” She paused. She stared at him. Before she tore her eyes away, slowly. She looked down, swaying her body for a bit. “I think, I’ll just head back.” She said it in a whisper. She waited for his response. He didn’t say anything which made Samantha lift her head to looked at him.
His face changed. The reaction suddenly changed. His eyes turned a bit dark. His jaw was clenching and his expression stoic. He looked cold. Samantha felt scared upon seeing his reaction. Gregory then looked away. She felt him exhaled. He was sighing. Samantha saw the disappointed look on his face. Gregory looked upset.
“Then… You can go, Sam.” He turned to face her right after he finished off his sentence.
Samantha was frozen. She stared at him but then he was quick to remove his gaze away from her. He turned his back and started gathering the hays on the side.
--
Samantha wasn’t used to the silent treatment. He suddenly became distant. He came back in the garden with Uncle Marcus. Samantha offered him a drink prepared by Aunt Nina. It was made from the fresh batch of lemons picked by Aunt Nina herself in her garden. Sam helped her with the squeezing of the pulp. It taste good since honey was added. But Gregory refused to received the glass and instead still politely excuse himself that he needs to go to the room and change his clothes.
Samantha’s heart throb because of it. The couple seemed to be engross with each other that they failed to notice what happened. But for Sam, it was quite obvious that Gregory suddenly act as if he’s trying to maintain his distance…
She distracted herself by taking a few sips of the drink but she was still thinking about him…
--
She walked away from the house and gone with the guidance of the wind that blows. Samantha went to the nearby spot where the large trees are. She breathe the sweet mist available for her sense to be inhaled.
She hated how she reacted but she feared that if she feel too much Gregory wouldn’t be able to reciprocate it. She was already in the verge, in the pit closer to falling for the man. But the fear of the unknown where nothing is set in stone made her afraid.
She then kept of walking. She let her fingers slide through the daises as she passed. Samantha kept on walking further away. She felt the need to be on her own. To ponder upon her feelings so far. She would rather have the solutions right away. She has to know what to do about it, or else she will wallow with the overthinking that can possibly pull her more into the void of her fears.
Samantha promised herself that she will be back before the sun sets. So she treaded the area and walked some more…
--
Gregory was pacing back and forth. He acted out of character. He saw her reaction and it made his heart felt like it jumped because of it. The reason he acted that way it’s that he took notice of her backing away from him. But in the end, he was the one who felt the regret of behaving that way.
She handed him the drink but he refused it. Gregory saw how expression went down. How her smile then turned into a disrupted expression of being pained. He was sitting on the edge of the bed. Gregory then ruffled his hair, messing it with his fingers before he rubbed the palm of his hands on his face. A frustrated sigh came out of his mouth. Before he then rose from being seated and got out of the room.
--
Gregory was making rapid movements. He went to see her down. She wasn’t there… He checked the veranda. Samantha wasn’t there. Gregory walked to the side of the balcony, hoping to find her this time. But she wasn’t there. Frustrated, he walked outside the house. He saw the couple preparing the grill. He stopped.
Aunt Nina’s face lit up when she saw Gregory. “Samantha went out for a walk.” She stated. She was carrying a tray full of the chrysanthemum flowers. “She said, she will be back before evening.” The woman was still pleasantly smiling at him.
Gregory stood. From standing, his heart leaped again upon the mention of Sam. “She’s not far from here right, Aunt Nin?” He asked, addressing her with the same calling that Sam used.
The woman displayed another glint in her eyes. “I think she wanted to breathe much air with the trees, Gregory. She went there.” Aunt Nina’s face turned towards the other side. “She went with the trees.” She answered vaguely.
