142. Modern Day Slavery
Now, Richard and Valentine had gotten to the car and he opened the door for him. He waited for him to sit down before he shut the door and joined Tim in the front. Before he could shut the door, his phone rang and he was distracted. Tim focused on him and waited for him to pick up his call.
He looked at Tim and announced, “The Bus Attendant.”
Without Tim's reaction, he answered the call while Tim and Valentine listened.
At last, he informed the Attendant, “Don't panic. We will be with you shortly.”
Without further delay, he drove off and George walked to the lobby. Barbara, the Corporal on duty greeted him accordingly while Laura, who just arrived and was trying to settle down, looked away when she saw him. Unfortunately, George was too busy with how to deal with the Field Marshal to recognize her. He walked to the elevator and got in. Soon, he was in his office and met the Sales Manager waiting for him.
He gave him a hand salute and he returned it.
“Kindly come with me,” he requested and they walked into his office.
“What brings you, Capt. Abrams?” He asked him after they settled down.
On The Road
After the armed men checked the other cars which was a disguise, they removed the roadblock and the driver moved but Ambrose stopped him.
“Let's wait for Gerald. Moving without documents is risky,” he advised him.
“It is true. We may encounter another group on the road and we will have a problem with them,” one of his team members agreed with him.
“The Major said he will be with us shortly,” the Assistant informed them, and the driver parked.
The ride was joy and sadness for Valentine because he was able to see the city for the first for almost a week. Sadness because he was unaware of their destination and what awaited him. Notwithstanding, he was quiet in the backseat. It was not quite long before he saw Tim pulled up and he was scared. He looked around to see whether there was a court nearby but found none.
“I will be back,” Richard announced and got out of the car.
“It's all right,” Tim answered and watched him.
At that point, Tim decided to prank Valentine, “I can talk to my boss to set you free if you promise me to turn over a new leaf, Valentine.”
He could not believe what he heard and asked anxiously, “Are you talking to me?”
“How many of you are in this car?” Tim asked curtly and Valentine cautioned himself.
“I apologize, Driver. I will do anything legal to get out of this mess.”
“It is all right. We are going to a site. When you get there, work with the rest and he may be impressed with you.”
“Work? What kind of work?”
“What kind of work do you do on a site? It's like you are not ready to regain your freedom.”
“I'm ready. I will learn how to do whatever you want me to do,” he promised.
Now, Richard returned to the car and said, “I asked them to calm down that their passports and permits will be recovered soon.”
“I see, Major. Valentine promised to learn how to do whatever you want him to do,” Tim informed him.
Now, the bus had moved and he turned on his engine and drove behind them. The Major turned, glared at Valentine, and pretended to be angry with him.
“He should not bother turning over a new leaf. I will hand him over to the police for proper prosecution,” he declared and turned his face.
“Kindly have compassion on me, Major. I am not proud of myself,” he pleaded.
“Why not? You should be proud of robbery and constituting a public nuisance,” Richard declared and Tim was mute.
“It is not what you think, Major. …"
“Shut your mouth. Who knows how many people you have killed? You would have killed the boss if he was a commoner.”
Richard's standpoint both as a soldier and a citizen was apt. Valentine showed guilt and it gave him out. He could not deny that and remained calm. The two waited for him to speak but he did not.
They drove in silence and after a while, he pleaded, “I regret my acts. Give me a second chance.”
Richard ignored him and Tim would not want the foreigners to see him with shackles, so he spoke.
“He is ashamed of his acts, Major. Kindly plead with the boss on his behalf to give him a second …"
“The driver is …,” Valentine interrupted and Richard reprimanded him, “Keep quiet.”
He shut his mouth instantly and the car was calm. They drove behind the bus and soon, they were at the site. Ambrose needed to hear why their documents were confiscated and he got out of the bus as soon as it stopped.
He walked to the clunker with a long face and Tim got out to meet him.
“I understand how you feel,” Tim pacified him.
“It is embarrassing. They did not even introduce themselves to us,” he pointed out as though he was pure.
“Don't let it bother you. I have informed the Third in Command and he promised to look into it.”
“That's good to hear.”
“I hope you have not informed your Head of State?” Tim asked with a feigned fear.
“Not yet. I wanted to hear from you before I can give him a detailed report.”
“I'm glad to hear that. I will advise you to leave him out of this. You are aware of his health condition.”
“You are right. Thank you for your concern.”
“You are welcome.”
Meanwhile, Richard had unshackled Valentine and he was out of the car. Tim looked at him and faced Ambrose.
“He will join your team. His presence will distract the government from you,” he informed him.
He was pleased with the arrangement and appreciated him, “Thank you for your concern.”
Instantly, he looked at Valentine and extended his hand to him for a handshake. He did the same and they greeted each other.
“I'm Ambrose Harsh. It is my pleasure to meet you.”
“It is nice to meet you. I'm Valentine Bentley.”
Afterward, Ambrose moved and Valentine looked at Tim for instructions.
“As you can see, they are foreigners,” he looked into Valentine's eyes and stated.
“Yes, Driver.”
“Good. The boss needs someone to monitor their activities in our country. If you prove yourself, I will let him know that you are fit for the job.”
Valentine looked at the two intently before he asked, “If I may ask, what are their activities?”
“They are miners. Do you have any mining knowledge?” Richard asked.
“Not at all,” he shook his head and answered.
“That won't be a hindrance.”
“You promised to learn how to do whatever I want you to do. Right?” Richard reminded him.
It was no secret that he was afraid of Richard and he answered at once, “Yes, Major. I did.”
“This is one of the things to learn,” Richard said.
“Come with me,” Tim said and moved.
He followed him without delay and they joined Ambrose and his team who had changed into their work clothes.
“Are you ready, Valentine?”
“Yes, Ambrose.”
“That's good,” he said and they began to work while Tim and Valentine watched them.
At The Auxiliary Armory PLC
“What brings you, Capt. Abrams?” George asked him after they settled down.
“I have an order from Oregany Head of State,” he informed him.
“That is good. Why are you not supplying?”
“If we supply, we will have nothing left for the Kingsland's Head of State. Remember his standing order.”
“Why should you lose sleep over that? He did not tell us when he wished to have his supply.”
“That is correct.”
“Or did you agree with him that his standing order is acceptable to us?”
“No. I didn't.”
“Good. Proceed with the supply.”
“Okay, Sergeant,” he said and left.
“We will produce more ammunition this weekend,” he concluded within him and called the Production Manager.
At The Site
If only Tim and Richard were aware of the importance that Valentine attached to the task, they would not bother about his escape. He felt honored that he would be representing his country and was willing to learn fast.
“How do you know a precious stone soil?” He asked Ambrose and Tim paid attention.
Ambrose happily educated them and they were pleased.Download Novelah App
