Chapter 40 - As if things couldn't get any worse

Shonee’s POV
At the sound of her voice, Vincent quickly tore himself away from me and I grabbed my bra and blouse in an attempt to cover my exposed body. But who was I kidding?
Avril had seen everything. She stood at the doorway, mouth agape and an expression of shock covering every inch of her face.
Time seemed to stand still as we all stood frozen in the tense silence, the weight of the situation heavy in the air until Vincent spoke, “Avr-“
“Arrgghh!”” Without warning she charged towards me and my instincts kicked in, allowing me to scramble over Vincent’s desk to the safety of the other side.
“You cheap whore!” Avril screamed, attempting to lung towards me a second time, but Vincent locked her in his arms and pulled her back.
“Avril!” He managed to dodge one of her flailing arms. “Avril, calm down!”
“No!” She screamed even harder. “Let go of me you cheating bastard! I’m going to kill her!” Her eyes landed on me and the sheer vexation in them made me tremble in fear. “You! I am going to rip your heart out, you hear me!”
With another frightening surge of energy, Avril pushed past Vincent’s barricade and he almost lost his hold on her.
“Fuck!”  Vincent quickly yanked her back. “Shonee, get the hell out of here!”
The instruction reached my ears, but my legs were frozen in place. It was as if I was too scared to move a muscle.
“Shonee! What the fuck is wrong with you? Move!”
I couldn’t. I just stood there, staring at the enraged woman as she clawed out of her fiancée’s hold, grabbed a heavy paperweight and flung it in my direction. “Die bitch!”
This time my muscles got the memo and moved out of the way, just in time for the paperweight to hit the wall with a loud ‘kum!’, leaving a deep dent and a crack in its wake.
Startled by the impact, I scrambled out of the office, ignoring Avril’s screams as they grew louder and Vincent ordered her to keep quiet.
“What in Jesus’ name is going on?” Gerta appeared out of nowhere in a bright yellow robe, eyebrows pinched in confusion. Then her eyes landed on me and they grew as wide as saucers. “Oh my God…” She took in the sight of my naked torso concealed by the bra and blouse I clutched against my chest.  “Shonee…what did you do?”
To avoid the question, I quickly dashed into my room and locked the door. But that wasn’t enough to stop the query from taunting my brain.
What the fuck did you do, Shonee?
I messed up. I messed up big time.
Another of Avril’s violent roars seeped past the door and I backed away from it. Numerous feet scuttled behind the wooden barrier. Vincent must’ve called in the house security when he could no longer subdue her.
Scared and confused, I plummeted onto my bed, feeling my muscles twitch in fear and terror. Oh, Lord!
Michael only found out about us twenty-four hours ago, and as if things couldn’t get any worse, Avril walked in on us half-way into an orgasm.
“Shit! Shit! Shit!” I run my hand through my hair, tempted to pull it out of its roots. “What the fuck is going to happen now?”
*****
The following morning
“Are you ok, Shonee?” Mirasol looked up at me with a deep frown of worry etched on her forehead.
“Yeah,” I responded heartily, attempting to swat away her concern. “I’m perfectly fine. Why do you ask?”
“You just gave me a tall glass of coffee instead of orange juice.”
I blinked rapidly, witnessing my mistake. “Oh s-sorry.” Quickly, I picked up the glass and replaced it with the right one. “I’m just frazzled…didn’t get enough sleep.”
After last night’s events, how could I?
All I did was toss and turn in bed and pace around in my bedroom until day broke. My mind was currently a nervous wreck and I was pretty sure that I was on the verge of breaking down.  To counteract that, I took the glass of coffee and chugged the whole thing down. At least, it will keep me alert for the next five to six hours.
Sighing, I slouched in my chair. Although everyone was at home, Mirasol and I were the only ones seated for breakfast. Avril and Vincent hadn’t come down yet, that’s if they slept in the same bedroom last night.
Gerta walked into the dining hall. “Mirasol, your music teacher is here. Are you done with your breakfast?”
“Yeah!” Mirasol chirped and finished off the last of her croissant.  She then hopped off her chair and ran towards Gerta who shot me a worried look before escorting Mirasol out of the room.
Left in silence, I sighed a second time. When I came down this morning, Gerta was out here laying the table. Even though she didn’t ask me any questions, I think she knew exactly what went on last night, and since she was just a simple housekeeper, she didn’t want to get involved.
The sound of clacking heels brought my attention to the entrance of the dining room.
Avril waltzed in like the boss she was in a well-tailored jumpsuit and full-on make-up. “Well, well, well, how wonderful to see the slutty nanny treating herself to a hearty breakfast.”
Ignoring that insulting jab, I stood up, determined to implement the plan I had come up with last night. “Look Avril…about last night, I am truly sorry. I was out of line and-“
“Oh please cut that apology crap,” she snarled and rolled her eyes. “We both know you don’t mean it. You’re just apologizing in an attempt to keep your job, which I should inform you, isn’t going to work because you’ve already lost it.”
The glare she gave me sent a shiver of fright crawling up my spine.
I swallowed.
“I want you to pack every filthy thing you came with and leave my house this instant!”
“That’s not going to happen, Avril.” On cue, Vincent strolled into the dining room, adjusting the cufflinks on his sleeves. He positioned himself in between me and Avril, facing her with all the authority a billionaire had to offer. “This is my house and you can’t fire her without my permission.”
Avril’s eyes immediately narrowed to slits. “This may be your house, but you didn’t hire her, I did. And that gives me the right to dispose of her whenever I want, and I want her gone now!”
Vincent was about to shoot another remark, but his ringtone cut him off. He pulled out the device to check the caller ID and found Avril’s father’s name flashing on the screen.
“Answer it,” Avril goaded. “And tell him how you’ve been fucking the nanny behind your fiancée’s back!”
Vincent did the opposite in fact. He rudely hit the red button and shoved the phone back into his pants pocket. “You can’t blame me for cheating on you, Avril. You might be my fiancée, but you know very well that we’ve never been intimate. Heck, we’ve never even kissed before!”
“That’s because you’ve always kept me at arm’s length!” Avril yelled back “Even when we’re on the same bed, you always make sure to leave a gap between us!”
“Because our relationship was never based on intimacy or love! And you know that!” He snapped. “I never loved you Avril, and I wouldn’t even be marrying you if your father wasn’t such a manipulative bastard!”
In a fit of rage, Avril raised her hand, ready to slap Vincent across the face. But before her hand could make contact, Vincent swiftly caught her wrist, his grip firm and unyielding. For a moment, they stood locked in a silent struggle, the tension crackling between them like electricity. Avril's eyes blazed with fury, her chest heaving with anger as she tried to wrench her hand free from Vincent's grasp.
With a sudden burst of strength, Avril yanked her hand out of his hold, her nails digging into his skin as she took a step back. Her face flushed red and beads of sweat found their way onto her forehead. "Leave Vincent.” She snarled then let her tone blossom into a full-blown bellow. “Leave! Before I call my father right now and tell him to pull the plug on Beckham Incorporated!"
Vincent frowned. “I’m not leaving until—”
“No.” Gently, I laid a hand on Vincent’s shoulder, no longer wanting to tolerate the back and forth. “You need to leave.”
His expression changed from anger to shock. “What? You’re taking her side?”
“I can’t be the reason why you lost your company.”
He looked into my eyes, saw the guilt, shame and remorse, then chose to back down. But not before he shot Avril one nasty glare. “I’ll find you a new place to stay. You have my word.”
Nodding, I allowed him to place a kiss on my forehead and then he took his leave with powerful strides.
Avril and I were now left alone in the dining hall. Her bright blue eyes zoned in on me and I suddenly wanted to coil into my shell.
“What are you standing there for?” She quizzed in indignation. “Go get your filthy things out of here, slut!”
