Chapter 17: The Rotting Flesh

Chapter 17: The Rotting Flesh
The night was thick with tension as one of Vergel's friends, Juan, lay on his bed, his body wracked with agony. He had been feeling unwell for days, but now, as he lay there, he could feel something terribly wrong stirring within him.
"Help me," Juan gasped, his voice barely a whisper as he clutched at his chest, his face contorted in pain. "Please, I can't take it anymore."
Vergel rushed to his friend's side, his heart pounding with fear as he saw the state Juan was in. "Hang in there, Juan," he said, his voice filled with desperation as he tried to comfort his friend. "We'll get you help, I promise."
But as Vergel looked closer, he could see that something was terribly wrong. Juan's skin was pale and clammy, and there was a sickly sweet odor hanging in the air, like the stench of rotting meat.
"What's happening to me?" Juan whispered, his voice trembling with fear as he looked up at Vergel with pleading eyes. "I feel like I'm dying."
Vergel's heart clenched with anguish as he watched his friend suffer, knowing that there was nothing he could do to ease his pain. But then, as he looked closer, he noticed something even more horrifying - Juan's flesh was beginning to rot and decay before his very eyes.
"Oh God," Vergel muttered, his voice choked with horror as he recoiled from the sight before him. "What's happening to you?"
Juan moaned in agony, his body writhing with pain as gangrenous wounds spread across his skin, emitting a putrid stench that filled the room. The insects within him seemed to be feasting on his decaying flesh, their tiny jaws tearing away chunks of meat with each wriggling movement.
"It hurts," Juan cried, his voice a pitiful wail as he clawed at his own skin, desperate to escape the torment that consumed him from within. "Make it stop, please."
But there was nothing Vergel could do. He could only watch in horror as his friend's body was consumed by decay, his once-vibrant flesh now nothing but a grotesque husk of its former self.
As the night wore on, Juan's cries grew weaker and weaker, until finally, they faded away into an eerie silence that hung heavy in the air. Vergel could only sit there, numb with shock and grief, as he mourned the loss of his friend and wondered what dark forces had brought about such a gruesome end.
And as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, casting long shadows across the room, Vergel knew that he would never be able to forget the horror he had witnessed - the decay of the flesh, a reminder of the terrible price that had been paid for their sins.
The authorities arrived at the scene, their faces pale with shock as they beheld the gruesome sight before them. Juan's body lay on the bed, his flesh completely devoured by the insects that had infested him, leaving behind only his skeletal remains.
Detective Ramirez, a seasoned investigator with years of experience, approached the bed with a grim expression, his stomach churning at the horrific sight before him. "Dear God," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper as he surveyed the scene. "I've never seen anything like this before."
His partner, Officer Gomez, stood beside him, his hands trembling with disbelief as he struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the horror that had unfolded in this room. "What could have caused something like this?" he wondered aloud, his voice filled with dread.
Ramirez shook his head, his mind racing as he tried to piece together the events that had led to Juan's gruesome demise. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice heavy with resignation. "But whatever it was, it's beyond anything we've ever encountered."
As they examined the scene, Ramirez and Gomez were struck by the utter lack of evidence - no signs of struggle, no traces of blood or other bodily fluids, nothing to indicate how Juan's flesh had been devoured so completely.
"It's as if he was consumed from the inside out," Ramirez mused, his brow furrowed in thought. "But by what, I have no idea."
Gomez nodded in agreement, his gaze fixed on Juan's skeletal remains with a mixture of horror and fascination. "Do you think it could have been some kind of insect infestation?" he asked, his voice trembling with uncertainty.
Ramirez considered the possibility, his mind racing with thoughts of parasites and flesh-eating bugs. "It's certainly a possibility," he conceded, his tone grave. "But I've never heard of anything like this happening before. It's like something out of a horror movie."
As they continued to investigate, Ramirez and Gomez found themselves stymied at every turn, their efforts to uncover the truth thwarted by the sheer inexplicability of the scene before them. And as they left the room, shaken and disturbed by what they had witnessed, they knew that they would carry the memory of Juan's grisly demise with them for the rest of their days, a chilling reminder of the darkness that lurked in the shadows, waiting to consume those who dared to stray too close.
Detective Ramirez and Officer Gomez stood outside the ramshackle hut of the local albularyo, their hearts heavy with the weight of the gruesome scene they had just witnessed. The memory of Juan's skeletal remains haunted their thoughts, and they knew that they needed answers - answers that could only be found in the dark and mysterious world of the supernatural.
As they entered the hut, the air was thick with the smell of herbs and incense, and the dim light cast eerie shadows across the walls. Sitting at a small wooden table in the center of the room was the albularyo, an elderly man with weathered skin and piercing eyes that seemed to see straight through to their souls.
"Welcome, gentlemen," the albularyo said, his voice soft and soothing. "What brings you to my humble abode?"
Ramirez cleared his throat, his gaze fixed on the albularyo with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. "We need your help," he said, his voice grave. "There's been a series of deaths in the city - deaths that defy explanation. We believe they may be connected to the supernatural."
The albularyo nodded sagely, his expression unreadable as he listened to Ramirez's words. "I see," he said, his voice tinged with solemnity. "And what is it that you seek from me?"
Gomez spoke up, his voice tinged with urgency. "We need to know if there's any truth to the rumors of a mambabarang operating in the area," he said, his eyes pleading for answers. "We need to know if there's anything we can do to stop it."
The albularyo's eyes narrowed slightly, as if he were considering his words carefully. "The mambabarang is a powerful and ancient evil," he said, his voice low and measured. "It is said to be able to control insects and other creatures of the night, using them to do its bidding and wreak havoc on those it seeks to destroy."
Ramirez and Gomez exchanged a nervous glance, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily on their shoulders. "Is there anything we can do to stop it?" Ramirez asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The albularyo sighed, his gaze fixed on a flickering candle that cast dancing shadows across the room. "The mambabarang is a formidable foe," he said, his voice filled with resignation. "But there are ways to protect oneself from its dark powers. Rituals and incantations passed down through generations can offer some measure of protection, but they must be performed with care and precision."
Gomez leaned forward, his eyes alight with determination. "Tell us what we need to do," he said, his voice firm. "We'll do whatever it takes to stop this thing, no matter the cost."
The albularyo regarded them with a mixture of admiration and concern. "Very well," he said, his voice grave. "But be warned - the path you are about to embark on is fraught with danger and uncertainty. You must tread carefully, for the mambabarang is a cunning and elusive adversary, and it will stop at nothing to achieve its dark goals."
With that, the albularyo began to instruct Ramirez and Gomez in the ancient rituals and incantations that would offer them protection against the mambabarang's dark powers. As they listened intently, their minds filled with thoughts of the horrors that awaited them, they knew that they were about to embark on a journey into the shadows, where the line between light and darkness blurred and the true nature of evil lurked in the depths of the night. But they were determined to see it through, for the sake of those who had fallen victim to the mambabarang's malevolent influence, and for the sake of their city, which stood on the brink of destruction at the hands of an unseen and unstoppable force.
