Chapter 12 The Abduction

In the vibrant morning light filtering through the windows of the fire station, the atmosphere buzzed with activity. Romar and Ryan, along with their fellow duty crew members, engaged in light-hearted banter as they went about their tasks.
Some sat around the communal table, enjoying their hearty breakfasts, while others diligently polished their equipment, their laughter mingling with the clinks of metal against metal.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and Jake strode in with purpose. His presence elicited a chorus of greetings and cheers from his colleagues.
“Ah, here comes our gallant hero, let’s give him a salute!” Romar proclaimed, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
“Yeheeey!” echoed the enthusiastic cheers from Jake’s comrades, their camaraderie palpable in the air.
Jake chuckled good-naturedly at the playful ribbing, a warm smile gracing his lips.
Just then, amidst the jovial atmosphere, one of Jake’s colleagues piped up, “Hey Jake, how about treating us today?”
Jake grinned, his eyes alight with determination. “Maybe next time, once I get that promotion,” he replied with a wink.
“Alright Jake, we’ll count on that,” Jake’s companion said as they exchanged excited glances, eagerly anticipating the promised celebration. With renewed vigor, they returned to their tasks, ready to witness Jake’s success and participate in the upcoming celebration.
But Jake’s demeanor quickly shifted as he addressed the room once more, his voice commanding attention.
“Alright, everyone,” he declared, his tone authoritative yet encouraging, “Let’s prepare ourselves. Our Chief Superintendent will be arriving soon for a meeting and a special news.”
Instantly, a sense of purpose filled the room as Jake’s words spurred his team into action. With synchronized efficiency, they readied themselves for the impending gathering.
“Are we having a meeting today with Sir Rodriguez?” Romar inquired, his voice carrying a hint of anticipation.
“Yes, he called me yesterday, making sure of my return because he said he has something important to tell us,” Jake responded, his tone reflecting a sense of curiosity.
“Didn’t he tell you guys anything?” Jake probed, turning to Ryan expectantly.
“No, he didn’t mention anything about the meeting,” Ryan replied, shaking his head in confusion.
“It seems like you’re the only one Chief told,” Romar observed, raising an eyebrow in Jake’s direction.
“I wonder what they’ll discuss in the meeting,” Ryan mused, furrowing his brow in thought.
“And you said it’s special news. That means there’s good news later!” Romar exclaimed excitedly, a spark of enthusiasm lighting up his eyes.
“I wonder what that could be, maybe it’s your promotion, Jake…” Romar speculated gleefully, nudging Jake playfully.
Jake felt a twinge of discomfort at Romar’s assumption. “We’ll find out later,” he responded, managing a forced smile to mask his unease.
“Alright, let’s get moving,” Jake suggested, eager to shift the focus away from the impending meeting.
They approached their equipment, their conversation weaving seamlessly as they cleaned and prepared.
“Come on, let’s move. Sir Rodriguez might arrive at any moment,” they said as they approached their gear and cleaned them while talking.
While cleaning their gear, Romar asked, “How’s your wound, Jake? Is it getting better?”
Jake looked at his arm wound and replied, “The burn hasn’t healed yet, but I’m alright. I can manage to move around.”
“Good for you and that’s the only injury you’ve got,” Ryan commented. “Well then, tell us how you got that wound.”
Jake chuckled, “Come on guys! I want to forget that foolishness, and you still want to ask about it,” Jake jokingly replied.
“Oh, Come on! Tell us,” Romar urged Jake to share his story.
“Did you get that from the explosion of the Gasoline tank?” Ryan asked.
[One of their firefighter companions turned on the TV to watch the news.]
“Okay, okay, you guys are so persistent, huh.” Jake said with a laugh.
“Alright, let’s hear it,” Ryan added.
“You’re really dragging this out before telling us,” Romar teased.
Jake’s gaze drifted to the scar on his arm, memories flooding back as he recounted, “I didn’t snag this in the blast itself. I’d managed to put some distance between me and the tank when it erupted, but I still caught some shrapnel. This? This happened as we were making our way out, when suddenly, a pillar of a nearby house came crashing down…”
Suddenly, Jake’s narrative halted abruptly as the news broadcast blared from the TV screen, capturing their undivided attention.
[News caster: “Breaking news just in, 11 bodyguards along with the driver of high-ranking government official Senator Liza Reyes are dead, while the Senator herself has been abducted by unidentified armed individuals.”
“From various angles captured by CCTV, the black vans blocking the senator’s SUV can be seen. Gunfire can also be observed raining down on the senator’s convoy. The senator’s bodyguards were killed on the spot while the senator was forcibly taken into the van before it sped away.”
“Authorities are currently investigating the incident and determining the motive behind the senator’s abduction.”]
The atmosphere at the fire station was tense as news of the incident spread like wildfire. Speculations and opinions swirled around the room as everyone grappled with the gravity of the situation.
“I hope nothing bad happens to the senator,” Romar said with concern.
“These thugs have become bolder ever since President Duterson stepped down,” Ryan remarked with dismay.
“Perhaps this is just one of the senator’s adversaries. She’s outspoken and fearless,” Jake added thoughtfully.
Just then, Sir Rodriguez entered the room, commanding attention with his presence.
“Good morning, Officers!” he greeted them.
“Good morning, Sir Rodriguez!” they replied in unison, saluting their commander.
“I’m sure you’re all aware of the situation regarding the senator’s abduction,” Sir Rodriguez began.
“Yes, sir,” they confirmed.
“Alright, let’s get straight to the meeting as I need to head to the North for another urgent gathering with the regional directors. This sudden summoning is likely related to the senator’s abduction,” Sir Rodriguez continued.
As he spoke, Jake appeared lost in thought, visibly troubled by something he couldn’t quite grasp. Romar noticed his silence and nudged him discreetly.
“Hey,” Romar called out softly, “Are you okay, buddy?”
Jake snapped back to attention with a nervous grin. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking about what’s going on.”
“Don’t worry about it. The police will handle it. Let’s focus on the meeting,” Ryan reassured him.
… [Cut to Government Department Scene] …
Government leaders convened to discuss the abduction, debating strategies and measures to ensure the senator’s safety. Tensions ran high as different viewpoints clashed, each vying for a solution.
Leader 1: "We need to act swiftly and decisively. Every moment the senator is in captivity, the risk increases."
Leader 2: "But rushing into this could endanger not only the senator but also our operatives. We must proceed cautiously."
Leader 3: "I propose we negotiate with the kidnappers. We can't risk escalating the situation."
Leader 4: "Negotiation might buy us time, but we can't guarantee the senator's safety. We need a plan for extraction."
Leader 5: "What about a covert operation? We deploy our best teams to extract the senator before negotiations even begin."
Leader 6: "A covert op carries significant risks of its own. We must weigh all options carefully."
Leader 1: "Agreed. Let's form a task force to explore both negotiation and extraction options. Time is of the essence."
Leader 2: "We'll need to coordinate with intelligence agencies and law enforcement. This requires utmost secrecy."
Leader 3: "While we strategize, let's also ensure the safety of the senator's family and staff. They're vulnerable targets too."
Leader 4: "We can't afford to overlook any detail. Let's review our security protocols and reinforce them immediately."
Leader 5: "I'll contact our international allies. They might have valuable intelligence or resources to aid us in this crisis."
Leader 6: "Keep in mind the political ramifications of our actions. Every move we make will be scrutinized both domestically and abroad."
… [Cut to Investigation Room] …
Police and detectives meticulously reviewed CCTV footage, desperately searching for any leads.
Suddenly, the telephone rang, jolting everyone into alertness. They quickly activated the tracker to trace the call.
As they picked up the receiver, a booming voice echoed through the room, sending shivers down their spines. The caller taunted them, boasting about their ability to evade capture.
“Listen carefully,” the caller demanded, “Prepare ten million pesos and deliver it to the Batangas Provincial Sport Complex tomorrow morning at 4:00 AM. Place it inside a black garbage bag and place it in the red trash can. Do you understand?”
“Don’t make any mistakes. Remember the life of your beloved senator is at stake. We won’t hesitate to kill her. Goodbye,” the caller threatened before abruptly ending the call.
Despite their best efforts, the police failed to trace the location of the caller, leaving them frustrated and anxious about the senator’s fate.
Immediately, they reported this to their superiors to strategize their next move regarding the demands of the senator’s abductors.
… [Back at the Fire Station] …
In their meeting led by Chief Superintendent Rodriguez, as they all stood in line, Sir Rodriguez made an announcement regarding the upcoming activities for the next month.
“In the coming month, I was advised by the interior department to conduct outdoor trainings in preparation for potential future events,” Sir Rodriguez said.
“For instance, the possibility of forest fires is not far-fetched, especially given the intense heat we’re experiencing right now.” He added.
“We’ve been given a week to execute this activity, and the location I’ve chosen for our training is Mount Apo because of its terrains and difficulty of it.”
Excited murmurs filled the room. “Mount Apo? We’re going hiking!” they exclaimed, thrilled at the prospect of the venue for their activity, clapping and some even high-fiving.
“Yes hiking will be part of our activity, so better prepare yourselves.” Added sir Rodriguez.
Romar raised his hand, “But sir, may I ask, if we’re all going for outdoor training, who will stay here at the station?” Romar inquired.
“Don’t worry, because the regional director will send temporary replacements to man the station,” Sir Rodriguez reassured.
Romar nodded in understanding.
“We’re also considering acquiring a helicopter for additional equipment. It’s a mountain, and relying solely on trucks might prove challenging, so we’re studying when this could possibly happen.” Sir Rodriguez added.
“Wow!” The firefighters cheered at the news, feeling the excitement surge within them.
“But for now, we’ll focus on studying the terrains and effective ways to put out fires in the mountains.
Then, soon we’ll move on to aerial training, maybe with help from foreign experts. Is that clear?”
“Sir, yes sir!” the firefighters chorused in response.
“Good, and before I forget,” Sir Rodriguez added,
“Jake, I already informed the higher-ups about your heroism, and they’ve promised me to promote you to a higher position.”
Jake’s colleagues erupted in applause.
“Congratulations, buddy!” one of them exclaimed.
“But wait, sir, is it possible for me to be reassigned to a different location if I get promoted?” Jake asked.
“Yes, Jake, there’s a big possibility of you being transferred elsewhere,” Sir Rodriguez replied.
Jake felt a pang of sadness at the thought of leaving behind his close friends Romar and Ryan.
“Sir, forgive me for asking a favor, but could you convey something to the higher-ups on my behalf?” Jake pleaded with his chief superintendent.
“Of course, Jake, what is it?” Sir Rodriguez inquired.
“If they decide to give me the promotion and transfer me to another location, I’m sorry, but I’d rather not accept the promotion,” Jake said nervously.
Romar, Ryan, and the others looked at Jake in surprise at his unexpected declaration.
“I started here, and I’ve grown attached to this place. I hope you understand, sir,” Jake added, his face betraying his apprehension.
“Alright, Jake, no problem. I’ll relay your request to the higher-ups,” Sir Rodriguez said reassuringly.
“Thank you, sir,” Jake said, feeling a sense of relief wash over him.
“Okay, that’s all officers,” said Sir Rodriguez as he adjusted his cap. “Tomorrow, make sure you have all your personal gear and equipment ready for the training, because we will leave on Monday morning.” he added.
Sir Rodriguez walked towards the door, grinning. “Make sure you’re prepared, because we have a long journey ahead.” With that, he exited the room.
Jake and his comrades exchanged awkward smiles, their brows furrowing in anticipation of the arduous trek ahead towards Mount Apo.
As their chief superintendent left, they all saluted in unison. “Thank you, sir,” they chorused.
Approaching Jake, Ryan and Romar tapped his shoulder simultaneously. “Buddy, what are you doing? Why are you turning down the promotion?”
Romar asked, disappointment evident in his tone.
Ryan grinned and remarked, “Because he doesn’t want to be separated from us, that’s the reason. Hahaha,” he teased.
Jake merely furrowed his brow, feeling awkward at Ryan’s comment, even though it was indeed the reason why he declined the promotion. “Just because,” Jake replied with a smirk.
In his mind, he longed to be promoted alongside his close friends.
