Chapter 28: Freedom.

As I sat beside Max's hospital bed, watching him sleep peacefully, I couldn't help but think about my father. Should I tell him about everything that had happened? The thought lingered in my mind, but I quickly dismissed it. No, I decided, it was better if he didn't know.
My father was overprotective, and if he found out about the danger I had been in, he would never let me out of his sight again. I valued my independence, my freedom to make my own choices and live my own life. If I told him about Rachel and the aircraft and the explosion, he would suffocate me with his concern.
No, I thought, it was better to keep this to myself. Max had handled the situation, eliminating our common enemy and saving my life in the process. I was grateful for his bravery and selflessness, and I knew that I could always count on him to be there for me.
But as for my father, it was best if he remained in the dark. I would keep this secret to myself, protecting him from the worry and stress that would come with knowing the truth. And besides, I thought with a smile, I was safe now. Max had made sure of it.
As I looked at him, still sleeping peacefully, I felt a surge of gratitude and love. He had saved me in more ways than one, and I knew that I would never forget it. And as I sat there, watching over him, I knew that our bond was stronger than ever. We had been through hell and back together, and we had come out on top.
I leaned forward, gently brushing a strand of hair out of Max's face. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Thank you for everything." And with that, I settled back in my chair, ready to watch over him for as long as it took, grateful for his presence in my life and the freedom that came with it.
I turned to Emma, my curiosity getting the better of me. "Emma, can I ask you something?" I said, my voice soft and gentle.
Emma looked at me, her eyes filled with a deep understanding. "Of course," she replied, her voice equally soft.
"It's about Rachel and Max," I continued, my eyes locked onto hers. "What was their relationship like?"
Emma's expression turned somber, her eyes clouding over. "It was toxic," she said, her voice laced with pain. "Rachel was obsessed with Max, but not in a healthy way. She was possessive and controlling, always trying to manipulate him to get what she wanted."
I listened intently, my heart going out to Emma and Max. "That must have been really difficult for both of you," I said, my voice filled with empathy.
Emma nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "It was. Rachel would stop at nothing to get what she wanted, even if it meant hurting me. She kidnapped me, held me captive, and used me as leverage to control Max."
My eyes widened in shock, my mind reeling with the horror of it all. "That's terrible," I breathed, my voice barely audible.
Emma's tears spilled over, her body shaking with sobs. "Max tried to save me, but Rachel was too clever. She threatened to kill me if Max didn't do her bidding. He was trapped, forced to obey her orders just to keep me safe."
I reached out, wrapping my arms around Emma in a warm embrace. "I'm so sorry, Emma," I whispered, my heart heavy with sorrow. "You and Max have been through so much."
Emma's sobs subsided, her body relaxing into my embrace. "We have," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But we're free now. Rachel's gone, and we can finally start to heal."
As Emma stepped out of the hospital room, leaving us alone for a moment, Max's eyes flickered open. He gazed at me, his vision blurry at first, but then his focus sharpened, and a warm smile spread across his face.
I leaned in, my heart racing with excitement, and pressed my lips to his. The kiss was passionate, filled with all the emotions we had been through together. Max's arms wrapped around me, pulling me close as he deepened the kiss.
As we broke apart for air, Max's eyes shone with love and adoration. "I'm so glad to be back with you," he whispered, his voice husky with emotion.
I smiled, my heart overflowing with joy. "I'm glad to have you back," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
Max's gaze locked onto mine, his eyes burning with intensity. "Our problems may be defeated, but our love will never fade," he said, his voice filled with conviction.
I nodded, my heart racing with excitement. "Our love will only grow stronger," I replied, my voice filled with determination.
As we kissed again, the hospital room faded away, and all that mattered was the love we shared. We were alive, we were free, and we had each other. Nothing else mattered.
Emma's return with food broke the spell, but the love and connection between us remained strong. We ate together, our hands touching, our eyes locked onto each other's. We knew that our journey was far from over, but we were ready to face whatever came next, as long as we were together.
