Incognito Xhinjo
Chapter 1 A Shadow of Potential
Crimson swirled at the edges of my vision, the color leaching from everything else. Mom paced, the hem of her robe whispering against the polished floor. The air tasted different, charged with something both exhilarating and terrifying. I didn't understand, not yet. All I knew was the frantic beat of my own heart and the crushing weight of expectation. They called me Incognito. Not a name chosen with love, but a label, a placeholder for the prophesied savior. My arrival was supposed to be a fanfare of light and power, a herald of a new age. Instead, I emerged with a squall and a wrinkled face, utterly ordinary. Disappointment hung heavy in the air, a thick fog clinging to my parents despite their forced smiles. My siblings, Lumina and Umbra, were testaments to the Xhinjo legacy. Lumina, a luminous beacon even as a babe, and Umbra, a swirling wisp of shadow. Me? I couldn't budge a pebble with my mind, much less ignite a sputtering candle. Years blurred together. Every sunrise was a silent accusation, a reminder of my glaring normalcy amidst a family that pulsed with magic. Lumina and Umbra reveled in their lessons, their laughter echoing through the halls as they mastered spells with effortless grace. I, on the other hand, remained firmly earthbound, my attempts at magic sputtering out in pathetic puffs of smoke. One blustery afternoon, I found myself exiled to the dusty attic. "Organize," they said, their voices laced with a weary resignation. It was a gilded cage, a way to keep me out of sight while the real prodigies honed their craft. Frustration gnawed at me, a constant companion. I craved to be more, to break free from the label of disappointment that clung to me like a second skin. Then, amidst the forgotten relics of the attic, I stumbled upon it. A leather-bound book, its pages whispering promises of something different. "The Unforeseen Path: A Guide to Unconventional Magic." The title burned itself into my mind, a spark flickering to life in the desolate wasteland of my hope. Maybe, just maybe, there was another way. A way for the ordinary Incognito Xhinjo to carve his own path, a path unseen. With trembling fingers, I opened the book, the weight of it a comforting promise in my lap. The world around me faded away, replaced by the promise of something new, something…unforeseen. The book crackled as I opened it, the scent of aged paper filling my nose. The script was archaic, swirling like smoke across the brittle pages. It spoke of a hidden magic, a power that resided not in flashy displays of light and fire, but in the subtle manipulation of the very fabric of reality. Hope, a fragile bud, bloomed in my chest. Could this be the answer? Suddenly, a booming voice shattered the attic's dusty silence. "Incognito! What are you doing up here?" I slammed the book shut, shoving it under a pile of moth-eaten tapestries. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. It was Umbra, his dark eyes narrowed in suspicion. Unlike Lumina, who always seemed to have a halo of sunshine around her, Umbra was a shadow personified, his moods stormy and unpredictable. "Just… organizing," I stammered, gesturing vaguely at the undisturbed chaos around me. He raised an eyebrow, skepticism etched on his face. "Organizing? Since when have you ever shown an interest in order?" I winced. Umbra never missed a beat. "Look, I was just…bored," I mumbled, trying to appear nonchalant. He scanned the room, his gaze lingering on the disturbed pile of tapestries. "Bored, huh? Well, boredom is a luxury you don't have. Tomorrow, you start advanced warding with Lumina and me." Warding? My stomach lurched. Advanced warding involved complex spells and intricate rune formations. It was a world away from my pathetic sputtering attempts at levitation. "But…but I'm not ready," I stammered. Umbra crossed his arms, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features. "Ready or not, Incognito," he said, his voice clipped, "the prophecy doesn't care. Get used to it." He turned to leave, then paused at the doorway. "By the way," he said, his voice softer now, "Mom and Dad… they still love you, you know. They just… worry." With that, he slipped out of the attic, leaving me alone with the weight of his words and the burning embers of hope rekindled by the forbidden book. Later that night, after everyone was asleep, I crept back to the attic, my heart pounding like a drum solo. I retrieved the book, the worn leather cool against my skin. As I deciphered the cryptic symbols, a sense of determination bloomed within me. Maybe I couldn't manipulate fire or conjure light, but this book offered a different path, a path that resonated with something deep within me. A floorboard creaked from below. I froze, the book clutched tightly in my sweaty palms. Footsteps. They were coming closer. Panic clawed at my throat. Who was it? Had someone discovered my secret? "Incognito?" A soft voice, laced with concern. I recognized it instantly. It was Lumina. Relief washed over me, so powerful it almost made me dizzy. Taking a deep breath, I called out, "In here!" Lumina entered the dusty attic, her face etched with worry. "What are you doing up here so late?" she asked, her luminous aura casting dancing shadows on the walls. I hesitated, torn between suspicion and a desperate need to confide in someone. "Look, Lumina," I blurted out, "there's something I need to show you." Her eyes widened in surprise. "What is it?" I glanced around the room, then held out the book. "This," I whispered. "I think it might be the answer." Lumina's expression softened as she gingerly took the book from me. As the moonlight bathed its pages in an ethereal glow, a flicker of recognition crossed her eyes. "The Unforeseen Path," she murmured, a hint of awe in her voice. "I thought it was lost." This unexpected turn of events left me speechless. Did Lumina know about this hidden magic? Could she be my guide on this unforeseen path? The future, once shrouded in uncertainty, now crackled with a tantalizing hint of possibility. As Lumina began to decipher the book's secrets, I knew this was just the beginning. My journey as the Unremarkable Incognito had just taken an extraordinary turn.
