As I slowly opened my eyes, the soft rustling of leaves in the trees above caught my attention. I lay there, gazing up at the foliage, my mind still foggy from sleep. The sound came again, this time louder and closer. My heart began to race as I turned my head to locate the source of the noise. That's when I saw it - a massive black bear emerging from the underbrush, its eyes fixed on us. My breath caught in my throat as I froze, my mind racing with fear. I glanced over at Gabriel, who was still fast asleep, oblivious to the danger lurking just a short distance away. My heart ached with worry, knowing I had to protect him, but my body seemed paralyzed with fear. The bear took a step closer, its eyes never leaving us. I could feel its gaze like a heavy weight, pressing down on me. My mind raced with thoughts of what to do next, but my body seemed unable to move. I knew I had to act fast, but my fear seemed to have taken over, rendering me helpless. I slowly turned my head back to Gabriel, my eyes fixed on his peaceful face. I knew I had to wake him up, but I was afraid of making any sudden movements that might provoke the bear. My heart was pounding in my chest, my mind screaming with urgency. I knew I had to do something, but what? I remembered my dad's words of wisdom, echoing in my mind like a mantra. "Never turn your back on a bear, son. Instead, slowly back away while keeping an eye on it. And if you need to scare it off, make loud noises, but not the kind that will make you sound like prey. Throw things at it, wave your arms, and make yourself look as big as possible." I took a deep breath and began to slowly back away from the bear, my eyes fixed on its massive form. I didn't dare turn my back on it, fearing that would trigger an attack. Instead, I moved cautiously, trying not to make any sudden movements that might provoke it. As I backed away, I started to make loud noises, shouting and yelling at the top of my lungs. I waved my arms wildly above my head, trying to appear as big and intimidating as possible. I knew the bear was sizing us up, trying to determine whether we were a threat or not. I quickly scanned our surroundings, looking for anything I could use to defend ourselves. My eyes landed on a nearby stick, and I grabbed it, holding it up like a weapon. I continued to shout and wave my arms, trying to scare the bear off. The bear took a step back, seemingly taken aback by my sudden display of bravery. It snorted and pawed at the ground, but didn't charge. I continued to make noise and wave my arms, trying to keep it at bay. Gabriel stirred awake, looking up at me with confusion and fear in his eyes. I motioned for him to stay calm, to stay behind me. I didn't want him to make any sudden movements that might trigger an attack. The bear took another step back, its eyes never leaving us. I continued to shout and wave my arms, trying to keep it at bay. Slowly but surely, it began to back away, its massive form disappearing into the underbrush. I let out a sigh of relief as the bear vanished from sight. I turned to Gabriel, my heart still racing with fear. "Are you okay, little brother?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. Gabriel nodded, his eyes wide with fear. "Y-yes," he stuttered. "What was that?" I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. "It was a bear," I explained. "But we're safe now. We just need to keep moving and find our way back home." As we continued on our journey, I noticed Gabriel's eyes fixed on me, his gaze lingering on my face. I couldn't help but wonder what was behind that intense stare. Was he worried about our situation? Was he scared? I decided to ask him, my curiosity getting the better of me. "Hey, Gabriel, what's up? Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked, trying to sound casual. Gabriel's eyes dropped, his face flushing slightly. "I was just thinking...you were so brave back there," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. I raised an eyebrow, surprised by his response. "Brave? What do you mean?" Gabriel looked up at me, his eyes shining with admiration. "You scared away the bear! I don't know if I could have done that. You're so strong and brave, and I don't know if I'll ever be like that." My heart swelled with emotion, hearing Gabriel's words. I felt a surge of pride and responsibility, knowing that my little brother looked up to me like that. "Gabriel, you're brave in your own way," I said, trying to reassure him. "We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. And besides, I was just trying to protect us. Anyone would have done the same thing." But Gabriel shook his head, his eyes still fixed on me. "No, it's not the same. You're special, bro. You always know what to do, and you're never afraid. I want to be like that too." I smiled, feeling a warmth in my chest. "You are special, Gabriel. And you're braver than you think. We're in this together, always. And I promise, I'll always be here to protect you, no matter what." I looked at Gabriel with newfound admiration, my heart swelling with pride. "Gabriel, you're brave too," I said, my voice filled with conviction. "You walked into the darkness to find us water, knowing how dangerous it could be. You're the reason we're still alive, bro." Gabriel's eyes dropped, his face flushing with modesty. But then he looked up at me, his gaze piercing. "I did it because of you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. I was taken aback, unsure of what he meant. "What do you mean?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. Gabriel's eyes locked onto mine, his expression serious. "How you faced that bear, how you weren't afraid. And I saw how you've taken care of me since the plane crash. You've been so strong, so brave. And I wanted to be like you." My heart skipped a beat, hearing Gabriel's words. I was touched by his admiration, humbled by his desire to emulate me. "So, you ventured out into the night, searching for water, because you believed in yourself, because you believed you could be like me?" I asked, my voice filled with emotion. Gabriel nodded, his eyes shining with determination. "Yes, bro. I wanted to be like you. I wanted to be brave, like you. And I knew that if I could find water, it would make you proud." I felt a lump form in my throat, hearing Gabriel's words. My little brother, looking up to me like that. It was a responsibility I didn't take lightly. I knew I had to continue being a good role model for him, to continue being brave, so he could continue to believe in himself.
