Chapter 17: Expectations.

As I dialed the familiar number, my heart raced with anticipation. I had expected this moment for what felt like an eternity, and now that it was finally here, I was torn between hope and doubt. Would Dad answer? Would he be safe? The questions swirled in my mind like a maelstrom, making my hand tremble as I held the satellite phone to my ear.
The rings seemed to stretch out forever, each one a tiny eternity that left me wondering if I had gotten the number wrong. Maybe I had misremembered the digits, or perhaps the phone was dead. The possibilities swirled in my mind, taunting me with their uncertainty.
And then, the inevitable. The voice mail picked up, Dad's familiar greeting a stark reminder that he wasn't available. I felt a pang of disappointment, a stinging sensation that left me breathless. I had expected this, I told myself, trying to rationalize the emotions that threatened to overwhelm me.
But the disappointment lingered, refusing to be shaken off. I felt like I had been teetering on the edge of a precipice, only to have the ground give way beneath me. The uncertainty was suffocating, leaving me gasping for air.
Alex and Maddie sensed my distress, their faces filled with concern. They moved in, their words a gentle balm to my frazzled nerves. "Hey, it's okay," Alex said, his voice soft and reassuring. "We're here for you. We'll get through this together."
Maddie nodded in agreement, her eyes filled with empathy. "You're safe with us, we promise. We'll do everything in our power to help you reach your dad."
Their words were a comforting embrace, enveloping me in a sense of security and support. I took a deep breath, trying to let go of my fears and doubts. Maybe they were right. Maybe I just needed to enjoy the present moment, to revel in the beauty of the natural world around me.
As I looked around, I felt a sense of wonder wash over me. The trees towered above us, their leaves a vibrant green that seemed to glow in the sunlight. The river flowed gently, its melodic voice a soothing serenade. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and earth.
I smiled, feeling a sense of peace settle over me. Maybe this was what I needed – a reminder that life was bigger than my worries, that beauty and wonder were always within reach. And with Alex and Maddie by my side, I knew that I could face whatever lay ahead, knowing that I was never alone.
As I gazed out at the vibrant group, their laughter and banter filling the air, I knew I had a choice to make. I could continue to wallow in my worries, letting my concerns about Dad's safety cast a shadow over our little impromptu community. Or, I could take a deep breath, shake off my fears, and join in on the fun.
Dad had always taught me to find the silver lining, to turn adversity into opportunity. And what better way to do that than to immerse myself in this makeshift family, to let their joy and camaraderie lift my spirits?
I turned to Gabriel, my eyes locking onto his. "Hey, Gabe, you up for a game of volleyball?" I asked, a grin spreading across my face.
Gabriel's eyes lit up, a smile creeping onto his lips. "Yeah, yeah, I'm in!"
Together, we approached the group, who welcomed us with open arms. Alex handed us each a volleyball, and we dove into the game with abandon. The sun beat down on us, its warm rays mingling with the cool breeze rustling the leaves. The sound of laughter and shouts filled the air, our spirits lifting with each passing moment.
As we played, I felt my worries slowly slipping away, replaced by the thrill of competition and the joy of connection. The group cheered us on, their energy infectious. Even Gabriel, initially hesitant, couldn't resist the allure of the game, his face alight with excitement.
In this moment, surrounded by strangers-turned-friends, I realized that life was bigger than my fears. That even in the midst of uncertainty, beauty and joy could still be found. And as we played on, our laughter echoing through the wilderness, I knew that Dad would want me to embrace this moment, to find happiness in the present, no matter what the future held.
As the sun reached its peak in the sky, the group's energy shifted from volleyball to a new game - hide and seek. The excitement was palpable, with everyone eagerly scattering to find their perfect hiding spots. But for Gabriel and me, the prospect of hiding alone in the wilderness was too daunting, too reminiscent of our recent traumatic experience.
We exchanged a knowing glance, our eyes communicating our mutual unease. Maddie noticed our hesitation and quickly intervened. "Hey, I'm not going to join in on the hide and seek either," she said, her voice gentle and understanding. "We can stick together and be the 'finders' instead."
Gratitude washed over me as I smiled at Maddie. Her thoughtfulness was a balm to my frazzled nerves, making me feel seen and cared for. Gabriel nodded in agreement, his eyes still a bit haunted by our recent ordeal.
As the others dispersed into the wilderness, their laughter and shouts fading into the distance, we began our own leisurely stroll with Maddie. The sun cast dappled shadows on the forest floor, its warm rays a comforting embrace. We walked in comfortable silence, the only sound being the rustling of leaves beneath our feet.
Maddie broke the silence, her voice gentle and soothing. "You guys doing okay? I mean, after everything that's happened?"
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "Yeah, we're just...still processing, I guess."
Gabriel nodded in agreement, his eyes fixed on the ground.
Maddie's expression was empathetic. "I can only imagine. But I'm here for you, and so are the others. We'll get through this together."
Her words were a reminder that we weren't alone, that this makeshift family was here to support us. As we continued our walk, the wilderness seemed less daunting, the shadows less ominous. With Maddie by our side, we felt safe, protected from the unknown.
