Chapter 20: The River.

As we emerged from our tent, the bright morning sunlight revealed a scene of utter chaos. The group, which had been so full of life and laughter just hours before, was now struggling to stay upright. The aftermath of the previous night's revelry was evident, as most of the guys were stumbling around, their faces pale and clammy.
The sound of vomiting filled the air, a gruesome symphony that seemed to echo through the forest. Alex, who had been so boisterous and energetic just hours before, was now leaning against a tree, his eyes closed and his face a sickly shade of green. His companions were faring no better, their bodies wracked with the violent spasms of alcohol-induced nausea.
In stark contrast, the three of us - Gabriel, Maddie, and I - stood apart, our eyes wide with a mix of amusement and disgust. We had abstained from the alcohol-fueled festivities, opting instead for a quiet night of juice and conversation. And now, as we gazed upon the carnage before us, we couldn't help but feel a sense of vindication.
"Well, I guess we made the right choice," Maddie said, her voice laced with a hint of smugness. "I mean, who needs alcohol when you can have a good night's sleep and a clear conscience?"
Gabriel chuckled, his eyes shining with mirth. "Definitely the three of us," he agreed. "We're the only ones who don't look like they've been through a war."
I nodded in agreement, my gaze sweeping over the group. "Yeah, I think we're the only ones who are ready to take on the day."
As we spoke, the group began to stir, their groans and moans filling the air. They stumbled around, their eyes bleary and their movements slow. It was clear that they were in no state to tackle the challenges of the day ahead.
"Hey, guys," I called out, my voice loud and clear. "Let's get moving. We've got a river to conquer."
The group groaned in response, their faces contorted in pain. But with a collective effort, they began to stumble towards the river, their movements slow and labored.
As we made our way down to the water's edge, the three of us couldn't help but exchange knowing glances. We had made the right choice, and now we were ready to face whatever lay ahead. The river, with its crystal-clear waters and gentle currents, seemed like a welcome respite from the chaos of the morning.
With a sense of determination and a hint of mischief, we plunged into the water, our laughter and splashing echoing through the forest. The day ahead was full of promise, and we were ready to take it on.
As we made our way down to the river, the group's energy and enthusiasm were palpable. The sun shone brightly overhead, casting a warm glow over the scene. The river, with its crystal-clear waters and gentle currents, seemed like the perfect setting for a fun-filled day.
The group had brought a volleyball, and the plan was to play a game in the river. It was a beautiful idea, and everyone was excited to get started. But as we waded into the water, Gabriel and I quickly realized that the river was deeper than we had anticipated. The water level was around 5ft, and our heights weren't quite up to it.
We looked at each other and shrugged, deciding to opt out of the game. Instead, we made our way to the river bank, where the water was only knee-deep. From this vantage point, we could watch the others play and enjoy the sunshine.
As we settled in, the group began to set up the volleyball net. They were all laughing and joking, their spirits high. The game was soon underway, with the ball flying back and forth across the net. The sound of splashing water and joyful shouts filled the air, creating a lively atmosphere.
Gabriel and I sat on the river bank, our feet dangling in the water. We watched the game with interest, cheering on our friends and enjoying the warmth of the sun on our skin. It was a peaceful and relaxing spot, and we were content to simply sit and take it all in.
As the game continued, the group's laughter and shouts grew louder. They were having a blast, and it was infectious. Even though we weren't playing, we couldn't help but smile and laugh along with them. It was a beautiful day, and we were grateful to be a part of it.
As we sat there, I turned to Gabriel and said, "You know, this is really nice. I'm glad we decided to come."
Gabriel nodded in agreement, his eyes shining with happiness. "Yeah, me too. It's great to just relax and enjoy the day."
I smiled, feeling grateful for my brother's company. We sat there in comfortable silence, watching the game and soaking up the sunshine. It was a moment of perfect contentment, and I knew that this was a memory I would treasure for a long time.
As I sat on the river bank, my feet dangling in the water, I couldn't help but feel a sense of joy and contentment wash over me. The sun was shining, the water was cool and refreshing, and I was surrounded by the people I cared about most. It was a perfect moment, and I felt grateful to be alive.
And then, without warning, my luck took a turn for the better. As I gazed into the water, I saw a flash of silver darting through the currents. My heart skipped a beat as I realized that it was a fish, and it was swimming straight towards me!
Without thinking, I reached out my hand and scooped up the fish, cradling it in my palms. I couldn't believe my luck - I had caught a fish! Me, of all people, who had never even held a fishing rod in my life.
I let out a whoop of excitement, my voice echoing across the river. "I caught a fish! I caught a fish!" I exclaimed, my eyes shining with joy.
Gabriel looked over at me, a grin spreading across his face. "Way to go, bro!" he shouted, his voice full of excitement.
I held up my prize, admiring its shimmering scales and flapping tail. It was a beautiful fish, and I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over me.
But as I looked into its eyes, I knew that I couldn't keep it. It was a wild creature, meant to swim free in the river, not be trapped in my hands. So, with a smile, I gently released the fish back into the water, watching as it swam away into the currents.
Gabriel cheered, his eyes shining with excitement. "That was awesome, bro!" he exclaimed. "You're a natural!"
I grinned, feeling a sense of joy and contentment wash over me. It didn't matter that I had let the fish go - what mattered was the experience, the thrill of the catch, and the memory that we had created.
As we sat there on the river bank, our feet dangling in the water, we both knew that this was a moment we would never forget. We had found joy in the simplest of things - a beautiful day, a cool river, and a chance encounter with a fish. And as we gazed out at the water, we knew that we would always treasure this memory, this perfect moment of happiness and contentment.
