Chapter 1: The Invitation
Chapter 1: The Invitation
Kimberly stood in the middle of her dressmaking shop, staring at the ornate envelope that had just arrived. The ivory paper was embossed with gold lettering, and she knew without opening it that it was an invitation to her cousin Rebecca's wedding. She sighed, feeling the familiar weight of dread settle in her stomach.
"Another family event," she muttered to herself, setting aside the dress she was working on.
With a mix of reluctance and curiosity, she opened the envelope. The elegant script on the invitation confirmed her suspicions.
"You are cordially invited to the wedding of Rebecca Patterson and Andrew Clarke. Date: July 10th. Venue: The Grand Oak Estate."
"Great," Kimberly groaned.
"Just great."
Her thoughts quickly turned to the inevitable barrage of questions she would face. Being 35 and single, Kimberly was used to the prying eyes and unsolicited advice from well-meaning relatives. But this time, she felt a knot of anxiety tightening more than usual. The thought of enduring another round of pitying glances and comments about her single status was almost too much to bear.
The bell above the door jingled, and her assistant, Emily, walked in.
"Hey, Kim! What’s that?" she asked, noticing the invitation.
"An invitation to Rebecca’s wedding," Kimberly replied, her voice laced with resignation.
"Just another chance for my family to remind me that I'm single."
Emily rolled her eyes sympathetically.
"Ugh, I hate that. Why can’t they just let you be happy?"
Kimberly sighed, setting the invitation down. "I know. But they mean well, I guess. They just don’t understand that I’m busy with the shop and, well, relationships are complicated."
Emily nodded, then her eyes lit up with an idea.
"Hey, why don’t you bring a date?"
Kimberly scoffed.
"Sure, let me just conjure one out of thin air."
"No, seriously," Emily insisted.
"There are these online platforms where you can hire a fake date. It’s perfect! They pretend to be your boyfriend for the event, and you get to avoid all the awkward questions."
Kimberly raised an eyebrow.
"You mean, hire someone to lie for me?"
Emily shrugged.
"Think of it as a professional service. And it’s just for one night. What’s the harm?"
Kimberly considered the idea, the wheels in her mind turning. It sounded crazy, but also... it could work.
"You know what? Maybe I’ll look into it."
"That’s the spirit!" Emily cheered.
"And hey, if it’s a disaster, at least it’ll make for a good story."
That evening, Kimberly sat at her laptop, searching for the perfect solution. After a few clicks and some browsing, she found a reputable-looking website offering professional date services. She clicked through profiles, reading reviews and looking at photos. One profile caught her eye: Timothy. He was handsome, with a warm smile and a description that emphasized his professionalism and ability to put clients at ease.
"Well, here goes nothing," she whispered to herself, clicking the "Hire" button.
The next morning, she received a confirmation email. Timothy had accepted her request, and they were set to meet an hour before the wedding. Kimberly’s nerves were on edge, but she felt a small flicker of hope. Maybe this crazy idea would actually work.
---
The day of the wedding arrived faster than Kimberly had anticipated. She spent the morning in her shop, trying to focus on work but finding it impossible to concentrate. By noon, she decided it was time to get ready. She chose a classic, elegant dress she had designed herself – a knee-length, royal blue number with a fitted waist and delicate lace sleeves. She hoped it would boost her confidence.
As the clock ticked closer to their meeting time, her nerves intensified. She checked her reflection in the mirror for the hundredth time, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles and adjusting her hair.
"You look beautiful, Kim," Emily reassured her, handing her a small clutch.
"And remember, you’ve got this."
"Thanks, Emily," Kimberly replied, taking a deep breath.
"I just hope this doesn’t backfire."
She arrived at the agreed-upon café a few minutes early. The small, cozy place was bustling with activity, and she found a quiet corner to wait. Her heart raced as she watched the door, each new arrival making her stomach flip.
Then she saw him. Timothy walked in, tall and confident, scanning the room until his eyes met hers. He smiled, and Kimberly felt a wave of relief wash over her.
"Kimberly?" he asked, approaching her table.
"Yes, that’s me," she replied, standing up to greet him.
"Hi, I’m Timothy. It’s a pleasure to meet you." He extended his hand, and she shook it, noting the warmth and strength of his grip.
"Thank you for doing this," she said, her nerves still evident in her voice.
Timothy’s smile was reassuring.
"It’s my pleasure. Shall we go over the details?"
They sat down, and Kimberly explained the situation – her family’s pressure, the questions she wanted to avoid, and the overall plan for the wedding. Timothy listened attentively, nodding occasionally.
"Got it," he said when she finished.
"I’ll follow your lead and keep things as natural as possible. Just relax and enjoy the event. I’ll take care of the rest."
Kimberly smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. "Thank you. I really appreciate it."
"Let’s get going then," Timothy said, standing up and offering her his arm. Kimberly hesitated for a moment before taking it, surprised by how natural it felt.
As they arrived at the Grand Oak Estate, Kimberly’s anxiety resurfaced. The place was stunning, with beautifully manicured gardens and a grandiose entrance. Guests were mingling outside, and Kimberly spotted her parents and relatives almost immediately.
"Just remember, you’re not alone," Timothy whispered, giving her arm a reassuring squeeze.
They approached her family, who were already eyeing them curiously.
"Kimberly, darling!" Her mother exclaimed, pulling her into a hug.
"And who is this handsome young man?"
"Mom, Dad, everyone," Kimberly said, her voice steadying.
"This is Timothy, my date."
"Nice to meet you all," Timothy said warmly, shaking hands and making small talk. Kimberly could see the approval in her parents’ eyes, and she felt a wave of relief.
Throughout the wedding ceremony and reception, Timothy played his part perfectly. He was charming, attentive, and seamlessly integrated into the family dynamics. Kimberly found herself laughing at his jokes and enjoying his company more than she expected. For a moment, she almost forgot that this was all an act.
As the evening wore on, they found themselves on the dance floor. The music was soft and romantic, and Timothy guided her effortlessly, his hand firm on her waist.
"You’re doing great," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear.
"So are you," she replied, meeting his gaze. For a brief moment, the world around them seemed to fade, and Kimberly felt a flutter in her chest.
As the song ended, Kimberly’s aunt approached them.
"You two make such a lovely couple," she gushed. "How did you meet?"
Kimberly’s mind raced, but Timothy didn’t miss a beat.
"We met through mutual friends," he said smoothly, smiling at Kimberly.
"It was one of those chance meetings that turned out to be something special."
"How wonderful!" her aunt exclaimed, beaming at them before moving on.
Kimberly let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.
"That was close."
Timothy chuckled.
"Just part of the job."
As the night drew to a close, Kimberly couldn’t help but feel a mix of gratitude and something else she couldn’t quite place. Timothy had made the evening bearable, even enjoyable. As they said their goodbyes and left the estate, Kimberly felt a sense of accomplishment.
In the car, Timothy turned to her. "So, how did I do?"
"You were perfect," Kimberly admitted, smiling.
"Thank you, Timothy. I couldn’t have done it without you."
"It was my pleasure," he replied, his eyes twinkling.
"And if you ever need a date again, you know where to find me."
As they parted ways, Kimberly felt a strange sense of loss, mixed with relief. She knew this was just a one-time thing, but she couldn’t help but wonder about the man who had played the perfect date. As she headed home, her mind was filled with thoughts of Timothy, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something unexpected.Download Novelah App
