Red Roses: 12

3RD PERSON'S POV
They pushed on, the forest closing in around them. The sounds of the soldiers grew more distant, but Ali knew it was only a matter of time before they were found again. They needed a plan, a way to turn the tide in their favor.
"Serban, do you trust me?" Ali asked, her voice urgent but determined.
Serban glanced at her, his expression unwavering. "With my life," he replied simply.
"Good," Ali said, a plan forming in her mind. "Follow my lead."
They moved swiftly through the dense undergrowth, their footsteps muffled by the soft earth beneath them. Ali kept her senses sharp, listening for any sign of their pursuers. The forest seemed to whisper around them, its secrets hidden within the shadows.
Ahead, Ali spotted a narrow ravine cutting through the landscape. It was their best chance—a natural obstacle that could buy them precious time. Without hesitation, she veered towards it, Serban close behind.
As they descended into the ravine, Ali motioned for Serban to crouch low beside her. The terrain was rugged, with boulders and thick foliage providing cover. They huddled together, their breathing quiet and controlled as they waited.
Minutes passed like hours, each second stretching into eternity. Ali strained her ears, listening for any hint of approaching danger. Then, she heard it—a faint rustling of leaves, the unmistakable sound of boots on damp ground.
"They're coming," Ali whispered to Serban, her voice barely audible.
Serban nodded, his gaze focused ahead. They waited, hearts pounding in unison, until the first soldier appeared at the edge of the ravine. He scanned the area, his weapon held ready, eyes narrowed in concentration.
Ali held her breath, counting the seconds. As the soldier moved closer, she tensed, waiting for the perfect moment. When he was within striking distance, she lunged forward with surprising speed and precision, tackling him to the ground.
Serban sprang into action, his movements fluid and lethal. He disarmed another soldier with swift efficiency, using his unnatural strength to incapacitate their attackers. Ali fought with desperate determination, each move calculated to create chaos and confusion among their enemies.
The skirmish was brief but intense. Ali and Serban managed to neutralize several soldiers, their combined efforts a testament to their unspoken teamwork. But their victory was short-lived as more soldiers descended into the ravine, their numbers overwhelming.
"We can't keep this up," Ali gasped, her body aching from exertion.
Serban glanced around, assessing their dwindling options. "We need to retreat," he said, his voice grim.
Ali nodded, her mind racing. "Back up the ravine. We'll find another way."
They fought their way back, inch by inch, against the tide of soldiers. Ali's muscles screamed with exhaustion, her movements growing sluggish. Serban stayed close, covering her retreat with fierce determination.
Just as they reached the crest of the ravine, a sharp pain exploded in Ali's side. She stumbled, a cry escaping her lips as she fell to her knees. Blood seeped through her fingers, staining her clothes crimson.
"Ali!" Serban's voice was a roar of anguish and fury.
Ali looked up, pain and fear etched on her face. "Keep... going," she gasped, her vision blurring at the edges.
"No," Serban growled, his eyes blazing with intensity. "I won't leave you."
The soldiers closed in, their weapons trained on them. Ali struggled to rise, but her strength was fading fast. She met Serban's gaze, a silent plea passing between them.
"Go," she whispered, tears mixing with rain on her cheeks. "Save yourself."
Serban hesitated, torn between his instinct to protect Ali and the grim reality of their situation. Then, with a fierce resolve, he turned towards the soldiers. His muscles tensed, ready to meet them head-on.
"Serban, no!" Ali cried, but her voice was drowned out by the roar of gunfire.
Bullets tore through the air, piercing the silence of the forest. Serban moved with astonishing speed, deflecting bullets with inhuman reflexes. He closed the distance to the soldiers in a blur of motion, his fists striking with lethal precision.
A soldier fell, then another. Serban fought like a force of nature unleashed, his rage and grief fueling every blow. But the soldiers regrouped, their numbers overwhelming even for him.
Ali watched in horror as Serban was surrounded, the soldiers closing in with calculated brutality. He fought valiantly, his strength unmatched, but the odds were too great. She screamed his name, a desperate plea echoing through the ravine.
And then, through the haze of pain and despair, Ali saw Camela emerge from the shadows. Her face contorted with triumph, she raised her weapon and took aim.
"No!" Ali screamed, the word torn from her throat in a gut-wrenching cry.
Camela fired, the gunshot echoing in the stillness of the forest. Serban staggered, his eyes locking with Ali's for a fleeting moment. Blood stained his shirt, a stark contrast against his pale skin.
Ali's heart shattered as Serban fell to his knees, his strength finally failing him. She crawled towards him, heedless of the danger closing in around them. Tears streamed down her face, mingling with rain and blood.
"Serban," she whispered, her voice breaking.
He reached out, his hand trembling as it brushed against her cheek. "Ali," he murmured, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm sorry..."
"No," Ali cried, gripping his hand tightly. "Don't leave me..."
Serban's gaze softened, a ghost of a smile touching his lips.
And then his eyes closed, his hand falling limp in hers.
"Serban!" Ali screamed, her heart shattering into a million pieces.
Camela's laughter cut through the chaos, cold and triumphant. "Well, well, well," she taunted, stepping closer. "Looks like the mighty creature wasn't so invincible after all."
Ali cradled Serban's lifeless body against her chest, tears blurring her vision. Anguish tore through her, a torrent of grief and rage unlike anything she had ever known. She stared at Camela through a haze of tears, her mind consumed with a single thought.
"You'll pay for this," Ali vowed, her voice trembling with fury. "I swear, you'll pay..."
Camela's smile widened, a predator reveling in her victory. "Oh, I'm counting on it, Ali," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "But for now, it's time to say goodbye."
The soldiers closed in, their weapons trained on Ali. She clutched Serban's lifeless form to her chest, a final act of defiance in the face of overwhelming odds.
And as the rain continued to fall, washing away the blood and tears, Ali braced herself for the inevitable.
Ali's thoughts raced as she glanced around the ravine, searching for any potential escape route. Her mind flashed back to the countless hours she had spent strategizing and planning for scenarios just like this one. She had always known the risks, the high stakes, and the thin line between survival and death.
"Please," Ali whispered, her voice barely more than a breath. "Give me strength."
The soldiers moved closer, their eyes cold and unyielding. Camela watched with a twisted smile, enjoying the sight of Ali's despair. But Ali refused to give in to the fear that threatened to paralyze her. She had one last chance, one final gamble.
"Now," she thought, her resolve hardening.
With a surge of adrenaline, Ali reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, compact device. It was something she had created, a prototype designed for situations exactly like this. Ali pressed the button, and a high-pitched sound filled the air, disorienting the soldiers for a precious few seconds. Conrad provided her with the parts, and she spent months creating it.
Using the brief window of opportunity, Ali rolled away from Serban's body and dashed towards the thickest part of the underbrush. Her body screamed in protest, every injury and exhaustion weighing her down, but she pushed through the pain, fueled by the need to survive, to avenge Serban.
The forest became a blur of greens and browns as she ran, her heart pounding in her chest. Behind her, she heard the shouts of the soldiers as they regained their bearings and started the chase. The sound of gunfire echoed, but Ali didn’t look back. She focused on putting as much distance between her and her pursuers as possible.
Ali stumbled upon a small, hidden cave she had noted during their earlier escape. It wasn't much, but it would provide temporary shelter. She squeezed inside, her breaths coming in ragged gasps. The cave was dark and damp, but it offered a momentary reprieve from the relentless pursuit.
She pressed her back against the cold stone, trying to steady her breathing and calm her racing heart. She couldn’t stay here long; she needed to come up with a plan. The prototype device had bought her some time, but it wouldn’t be enough to escape forever.
But the soldiers...
She tried her best to escape. But still,
--they caught her.
