Chapter 3

The following morning, Emily awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. Sunlight streamed through the thin curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. She stretched and smiled, feeling more optimistic about her new home. Today, she decided, she would explore the town and learn more about its history.
After a quick breakfast, Emily headed into town. The streets were bustling with activity, a stark contrast to the eerie silence of her house. She noticed a small café on the corner and decided to stop for a cup of coffee. As she entered, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods enveloped her, instantly making her feel at home.
“Morning, what can I get for you?” the barista asked with a friendly smile.
“Just a coffee, please. Black,” Emily replied, glancing around the cozy café.
As she waited for her coffee, Emily noticed a bulletin board filled with local events and announcements. One flyer in particular caught her eye. It advertised a town meeting that evening at the community center, focusing on the history and legends of Hollow Creek.
“Perfect,” Emily thought. “This could be exactly what I need to learn more about the house.”
“Here you go,” the barista said, handing her the coffee. “You’re new in town, right?”
“Yes, I just moved in. I’m Emily,” she replied.
“Nice to meet you, Emily. I’m Sarah. If you need any recommendations or have any questions, just let me know,” Sarah said warmly.
“Actually, I do have a question. I’m living in the old Victorian house on the outskirts of town. Do you know anything about its history?” Emily asked, hoping for some insights.
Sarah’s expression shifted slightly. “The McAllister place, right? Yeah, it’s got quite a story. A lot of folks around here think it’s haunted.”
“So I’ve heard,” Emily said, leaning in with interest. “Can you tell me more about it?”
“Well, the McAllisters were a prominent family back in the day. But about fifty years ago, they died under mysterious circumstances. Some say it was an accident, others believe it was something more sinister,” Sarah explained in a hushed tone.
“Do you believe the house is haunted?” Emily asked, sipping her coffee.
Sarah shrugged. “I’ve never seen anything myself, but there are plenty of stories. If you want to learn more, you should talk to Old Mrs. Henderson. She’s lived here all her life and knows everything about this town’s history.”
“Where can I find her?” Emily asked, feeling a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
“She usually spends her mornings at the park. Just look for the lady feeding the pigeons,” Sarah replied with a smile.
“Thanks, Sarah. I’ll go see if I can find her,” Emily said, finishing her coffee.
After leaving the café, Emily made her way to the town park. It didn’t take long to spot Mrs. Henderson, a petite elderly woman with a kind face, tossing breadcrumbs to a flock of eager pigeons.
“Excuse me, Mrs. Henderson?” Emily called out as she approached.
The old woman looked up, her eyes sharp and inquisitive. “Yes, dear? How can I help you?”
“My name is Emily. I just moved into the old Victorian house on the outskirts of town, and I’ve been hearing a lot about its history. Sarah at the café said you might be able to tell me more,” Emily explained.
Mrs. Henderson’s expression softened. “Ah, the McAllister place. It’s been a long time since anyone lived there. Come, sit with me,” she said, patting the bench beside her.
Emily sat down, feeling a mixture of excitement and unease. “What can you tell me about the McAllisters?”
Mrs. Henderson sighed, her gaze distant. “The McAllisters were a lovely family. Thomas and Margaret, and their two children, Elizabeth and James. They moved to Hollow Creek to escape the chaos of city life, much like you, I imagine. But tragedy struck them hard.”
“What happened?” Emily asked, leaning in.
“One night, there was a terrible storm. Lightning struck the house, setting it on fire. Thomas and Margaret perished in the blaze, but the children...they were never found. Some say they escaped, others believe their spirits are still trapped in the house,” Mrs. Henderson said, her voice tinged with sadness.
“That’s awful,” Emily whispered, her heart aching for the lost family.
“After the fire, strange things started happening. People reported hearing cries and whispers, seeing shadows move in the windows. No one dared to live there for long,” Mrs. Henderson continued.
“Do you think the house is haunted?” Emily asked, her curiosity piqued.
“I believe there are things in this world we can’t explain. The McAllisters’ spirits may be restless, seeking closure. If you want my advice, treat the house with respect and kindness. Sometimes, all spirits need is to know they’re not forgotten,” Mrs. Henderson said, patting Emily’s hand.
“Thank you, Mrs. Henderson. That means a lot,” Emily said sincerely.
“You’re welcome, dear. And if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask,” the old woman replied with a warm smile.
Emily left the park feeling a mix of emotions. The story of the McAllisters weighed heavily on her mind as she walked back to her car. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story, something that might help her understand the strange occurrences in her new home.
As evening approached, Emily made her way to the community center for the town meeting. The room was filled with townspeople, all gathered to share stories and learn about their shared history. Emily found a seat near the front, eager to hear more about the town and its legends.
The meeting began with a presentation on Hollow Creek’s founding, but soon shifted to the more intriguing tales of hauntings and unexplained phenomena. Emily listened intently, her curiosity growing with each story.
Finally, the speaker, a local historian named Mr. Thompson, addressed the topic that had drawn Emily there. “And now, let’s talk about one of our town’s most enduring legends—the McAllister family.”
Emily leaned forward, her heart pounding with anticipation.
“The McAllisters were a well-loved family, but their tragic end has left a lasting mark on Hollow Creek. Many believe their spirits remain in their old home, unable to find peace. Over the years, there have been countless reports of strange sightings and eerie sounds coming from the house,” Mr. Thompson said, his voice echoing through the hall.
“Some say the spirits are trying to communicate, to tell us something important. Others believe they are simply lost, searching for the family they once had. Whatever the truth may be, the McAllister house remains one of Hollow Creek’s most intriguing mysteries,” he concluded.
After the meeting, Emily approached Mr. Thompson, eager to learn more. “Excuse me, Mr. Thompson? I’m Emily. I just moved into the McAllister house, and I’ve been hearing a lot about its history. Do you have any advice on how to handle...whatever might be there?”
Mr. Thompson looked at her thoughtfully. “Ah, you’re the new owner. First of all, welcome to Hollow Creek. My advice would be to approach the house with an open mind and a respectful heart. If there are spirits there, they might just need someone to acknowledge their presence and offer them peace.”
“I’ve heard that before,” Emily said, recalling Mrs. Henderson’s words. “Thank you for the advice.”
“Anytime. And if you ever uncover anything new about the house, I’d love to hear about it,” Mr. Thompson said with a smile.
As Emily drove home that night, she felt a renewed sense of purpose. The stories and advice she had gathered made her feel more connected to the house and its history. She was determined to uncover the truth about the McAllisters and, hopefully, bring peace to their restless spirits.
When she arrived home, the house seemed to welcome her with a gentle creak of its floorboards. Emily set her keys on the table and took a deep breath, feeling a sense of calm wash over her.
“Alright, McAllisters,” she whispered into the quiet house. “I’m here to help. Let’s see if we can find some peace together.”
With that, she headed upstairs to her bedroom, ready to face whatever the night might bring.
