Chapter 7
The next morning, the air was crisp, and the sun shone brightly, casting long shadows over the McAllister house. Emily awoke feeling refreshed and hopeful for the first time since she had moved in. She headed downstairs to find Michael and Dr. Warren already gathered around the kitchen table, discussing their next steps.
"Good morning, Emily," Michael greeted her with a warm smile. "How did you sleep?"
"Better than I have in weeks," Emily replied, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "So, what's on the agenda for today?"
"Well," Dr. Warren began, adjusting her glasses, "now that we've performed the cleansing ritual and banished the presence, it's important to ensure the house remains peaceful. There might still be residual energy we need to address."
Emily nodded, taking a sip of her coffee. "What do you suggest?"
"First, I'd like to walk through the house again, just to make sure there's no lingering energy," Dr. Warren said. "And I think it would be beneficial to continue researching the McAllister family's history. There might be more we can learn."
"Sounds like a plan," Michael said. "Where should we start?"
Dr. Warren smiled. "Let's start with a walk through the house. Emily, why don't you lead the way?"
Emily led them through the house, starting with the living room. As they walked, Dr. Warren paused occasionally, closing her eyes and focusing on the energy in the room.
"Everything seems calm here," Dr. Warren said after a few minutes. "Let's move on to the next room."
They continued their walk, moving through the dining room, kitchen, and upstairs bedrooms. Each room felt more peaceful than the last, and Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of relief.
When they reached the attic, Emily hesitated for a moment before opening the door. The attic had always felt the most unsettling to her, but now it seemed almost welcoming.
"This is where we found the locket," Emily said, glancing around the room.
Dr. Warren nodded, her eyes scanning the space. "Yes, and it seems much calmer now. The cleansing ritual did its job."
"Thank goodness," Emily said with a sigh of relief. "I was worried the attic would still feel...off."
Michael chuckled. "It's amazing how different the house feels now. Almost like a completely different place."
Emily smiled. "It really does. Thank you both for helping me with this. I don't know what I would have done without you."
"We're just glad we could help," Dr. Warren said, giving Emily a reassuring smile. "Now, let's head back downstairs and talk about the next steps."
As they made their way back to the kitchen, Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. They had faced the darkness in the house and come out victorious. Now, it was time to delve deeper into the history of the McAllister family and ensure their legacy was properly understood.
Once they were seated around the kitchen table again, Dr. Warren pulled out a notebook and began jotting down notes. "I think it's important to document everything we've found so far. This way, we can create a comprehensive record of the McAllister family's history and the events that transpired in this house."
"That's a great idea," Emily said, nodding in agreement. "Where should we start?"
"Let's start with what we know about the family," Dr. Warren suggested. "Emily, why don't you tell us what you've learned from the journal and the other documents we've found?"
Emily took a deep breath and began recounting the key points from Margaret's diary and Thomas's notes. She spoke about their attempts to protect their children, the hidden room in the basement, and the final, desperate measures they had taken to banish the presence.
As Emily spoke, Michael took notes, occasionally asking questions for clarification. Dr. Warren listened intently, her expression thoughtful.
"This is all very useful," Dr. Warren said when Emily had finished. "But I think there's still more we can uncover. We need to look deeper into the McAllister family's past and see if there are any other clues that might explain the presence that haunted them."
"How do we do that?" Michael asked, setting down his pen.
"We can start by visiting the local library and historical society," Dr. Warren suggested. "They might have old records, photographs, and other documents that could shed light on the family's history."
Emily nodded, feeling a sense of excitement. "I think that's a great idea. I'll call the library and see if we can arrange a visit."
"Perfect," Dr. Warren said with a smile. "While you do that, Michael and I will continue organizing the documents we've found. There's still a lot to go through."
Emily stood up and headed to the phone, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. She dialed the number for the local library and waited for someone to answer.
"Hollow Creek Public Library, how can I help you?" a friendly voice said on the other end of the line.
"Hi, this is Emily Bennett. I'm doing some research on the McAllister family and was wondering if I could come in and look at your historical records," Emily said.
"Of course, Ms. Bennett. We have a collection of old newspapers, photographs, and documents that might be helpful. When would you like to come in?" the librarian asked.
"Would this afternoon be alright?" Emily asked, glancing at the clock.
"Absolutely. We'll be expecting you," the librarian replied.
"Thank you so much," Emily said, feeling a sense of anticipation. She hung up the phone and turned to Michael and Dr. Warren. "We're all set to visit the library this afternoon."
"Excellent," Dr. Warren said. "Let's finish up here and then head over."
They spent the next few hours organizing the documents they had found, making notes and taking photographs for their records. By the time they were ready to leave, Emily felt a sense of accomplishment.
As they drove to the library, Emily couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She had always loved libraries, and the prospect of uncovering more about the McAllister family filled her with anticipation.
When they arrived at the library, they were greeted by a kind-faced librarian named Mrs. Thompson. She led them to a quiet corner of the library where old records and documents were stored.
"Feel free to take your time and look through anything you need," Mrs. Thompson said, gesturing to the shelves filled with old books and boxes. "If you have any questions, I'll be at the front desk."
"Thank you so much," Emily said, smiling warmly.
As they began sifting through the records, Emily found herself engrossed in the history of Hollow Creek. There were old photographs of the town, newspaper clippings, and handwritten letters that painted a vivid picture of the past.
"Look at this," Michael said, holding up a faded photograph. It showed a group of people standing in front of a grand house that looked strikingly familiar. "Isn't that the McAllister house?"
"It is," Dr. Warren said, examining the photograph. "This must have been taken before the fire."
Emily studied the faces in the photograph, trying to identify the McAllisters. She pointed to a tall man standing beside a woman with a kind smile. "That must be Thomas and Margaret."
"And these must be their children," Michael said, pointing to two young boys standing in front of them.
Emily felt a pang of sadness as she looked at the photograph. "They look so happy. It's hard to believe what happened to them."
"Tragedy often strikes unexpectedly," Dr. Warren said, her voice gentle. "But by understanding their story, we can honor their memory and ensure their legacy is preserved."
As they continued their research, they found more photographs, letters, and newspaper articles that provided valuable insights into the McAllister family's history. Emily felt a deep sense of connection to them, as if she were piecing together the fragments of their lives.
By the time they left the library, Emily felt a sense of fulfillment. They had uncovered more about the McAllister family than she had ever imagined possible.
As they drove back to the house, Emily turned to Michael and Dr. Warren. "Thank you both for helping me with this. I feel like we're finally getting to the heart of the story."
"It's our pleasure, Emily," Michael said, giving her a reassuring smile.
"Indeed," Dr. Warren agreed. "This journey has been as enlightening for us as it has been for you."
As they pulled into the driveway of the McAllister house, Emily felt a sense of peace. They had faced the darkness and uncovered the truth. Now, it was time to honor the McAllister family's memory and ensure their story was never forgotten.Download Novelah App
