Chapter 28 Payback

 Nathan
“As I have said, no one else here has proved to be worthy of my trust. If UNLFA Co partially owns your company, consider our agreements and contracts terminated with immediate effect,” I clarify my stands. All those companies are as good as liquidated without UNLFA Co. This includes Daniel’s, Thomas’ and twenty other companies.
“I will give you all time to digest my words before proceeding to the next agenda,” I tell my devastated guests and chat to my wife, Mrs Gail and Brian as the chaos in the conference hall continues. The media houses are going frantic trying to capture every one of their expressions. I don’t think over fifty CEO’s and forty senior managers have ever been fired in one go in this country before.
“Are the police here?” I ask Brian after twenty minutes of trying to block what is happening on the floor.
“Yes, Sir. The minister is also in attendance and we have confirmation that James and his friends were behind Captain Swart’s shooting.”
I nod at Brian. I had no doubt that the evidence we had of him assaulting me, abducting Amari and stealing company funds was enough to send him to prison for a long time, but attempted murder of a police officer is life in prison.
“Ready to never seeing your uncle again?” I ask my gorgeous wife, who clenches her fists. “Thomas and his family are dead to me,” she says and I can’t help but pull her into my arms. I can feel her anger and pain. All along she thought her father’s death was an accident, only to discover that her own uncle did it. I can’t imagine how hurtful that is. I squeeze her. I still wish I was there when she needed money to save her mother and when she was struggling to make ends meet. I will spend the rest of my life doing everything in my power to make it up to her.
“I love you,” I say and plant a kiss on her forehead before taking the stage again. I clear my throat and everyone takes their seats. It takes a moment for the noise to settle down.
“You must be wondering why the police and minister are in attendance today. Well, as I said, you are not only disloyal but murderous as well. Allow me to introduce you to the man who tried to kill me,” I say and see my guests exchange looks as I project my crashed limited edition sports car.
Michael tries to sneak out while I explain how my brakes and car’s computer system was tampered with.  I nod at the officers near the door, who grab and cuff him.
“Mr Michael Ford, you are under arrested for attempted murder of Mr Lord. You have the right to remain silent. Anything and everything you say shall be against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. A state one will be allocated to you should you not afford your own…” the officer recites Micheal his rights while everyone looks at him, shocked. I don’t know why they even look surprised because I now have no doubt that any of them could have done it.
“Michael!” Ella is the one who exclaims. “How could you?” she asks as if she is not his fiancée.
“Shut the fuck up, Ella. I did all of it for you!” he roars, while I laugh. He can’t possible think a woman who pretended to be crazy in love with me for years would stand by him now when he has lost everything.
“Me? Are you crazy. How could you try to kill Nathan and steal his money for me?” she asks, acting all innocent. This woman is shameless.
“Stop pretending for once. We loved each other, but you wanted his money. It’s always been like that. You aborted our baby to continue being with him. What did you expect me to do?” Michael yells, his eyes blazing at her.
I am not even surprised by his utterance.
“No, I didn’t! I have always loved Nathan. I would never want him dead!”
Ella is still acting all righteous when another officer cuffs her too.
“What? I had nothing to do with this!” she cries and turns to me with misty eyes. Funny how she used to twist my arm with that. I was really pathetic back then.
“Nathan, I didn’t. I swear I had no idea!” she tries to explains, but I cannot be bothered. She is the one who gave her boyfriend access to my car and that is what the police are going with. An accessory to murder is what they call it.
“Nathan, Babe, please,” Ella pleads and I flinch at her address. Just the thought that I wasted so much of my time and money on her makes me sick to my stomach.
“Please take that whore off my sight,” I tell the officers who drag Ella towards the exit.
“Oh, wait. You might as well take the whole family,” I shout behind the officers before projecting Amaya’s dad’s car and emails between Thomas and forensic guy.
“Oh my word!” the Sky reporter exclaims in disbelief.
I pull my wife into my arms as the officers cuff Thomas and his wife. The evil bastard does not even try to deny it.
“And, Thomas, I will be claiming back everything you stole from your brother’s family,” I say and he can’t even look at me. “I believe my wife owns everything you have,” I add.
“You are evil and disgusting. I hope you die and rot in jail! Hell is waiting for you!” Mrs Gail yells at him while Amari buries her face on my chest. Her parents’ deaths and how her uncle mistreated her is a sore spot I don’t think will heal anytime soon.
I and everyone in the centre is emotionally exhausted by the time I come to James. He just shakes his head and gives the officers his hands for them to cuff him. I bet he knows his fate. Even his connections can’t get rid of the evidence that is now in the public domain. The evidence of crooked officers is a serious problem that the minister can not ignore either. I can only hope that the department makes it its priority to get rid of the rest of them.
The media personnel still want to interview me after the conference but my wife looks exhausted, and I no longer have the respect I had for them before my accident. They are obviously impartial and superficial. They crucified me on the press. Not to mention how they precipitated my impotent status. Those who were very vocal and calling my wife names after Campbell lied about her can’t even look at me in the eye.
“Nathan, man, please forgive my stupidity,” Daniel pleads when I walk past him.
I take out my decoder and replay his words.
“…Look at yourself. What are you even doing here? You don’t belong here anymore. Do yourself a favour, man, and stay away. Go back to other good-for-nothing pathetic souls like you.”
He casts down his eyes, ashamed. That was a just over an hour ago and he has the audacity to even speak to me.
“I helped you build your business from scratch and never asked anything from you. Humanity is all I expected, nothing less,” I say, the same time Mrs Gail steps on his foot with her heel. He winces while I lead my wife to the SUV parked in front of the centre.
I have just opened the door for Amari when firearm goes off.
“Amari!”
