Chapter 3 Zhang Affair

Zhang stood outside the towering corporate building, his heart heavy with anticipation and anxiety. He knew he was about to face the storm of his life, not from the media frenzy surrounding his affair with Mei-ling, but from the one person whose judgment mattered the most: his grandfather.
As he fumbled with his phone, the device erupted into a cacophony of ringing. With trembling hands, Zhang answered, bracing himself for the inevitable verbal onslaught.
Zhang, you disgraceful fool! His grandfather's voice thundered through the receiver, drowning out the sounds of the bustling street.
What in the world do you think you're doing, cavorting with that woman, Mei-ling? Have you lost all sense of honor and decency?"
Zhang winced at the venom in his grandfather's words, feeling the weight of his disappointment crush down upon him.
"Grandfather, please," he began, but his words faltered under the force of his grandfather's rage.
Don't you dare 'please' me! His grandfather roared.
Do you have any idea of the damage you've caused to our family's reputation? To my legacy? I built this company from the ground up, and you're dragging its name through the mud with your reckless behavior!"
Zhang swallowed hard, his throat dry with shame. He knew his grandfather was right, but facing the consequences of his actions was far more daunting than he had anticipated.
"I... I'm sorry, grandfather," Zhang stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never meant for any of this to happen. It's just... Mei-ling, she..."
"Mei-ling is nothing but a disgraceful temptress, his grandfather interjected, his tone laced with disdain. "She's using you, Zhang, and you're too blind to see it. I raised you better than this, to have some self-respect, some dignity.
Zhang felt a lump form in his throat, the weight of his grandfather's disappointment crushing him like a vice. He had always looked up to his grandfather and admired him for his strength and integrity. And now, he had become the embodiment of everything his grandfather despised.
I know I've made a terrible mistake, Zhang admitted, his voice heavy with remorse.
But please, grandfather, give me a chance to make things right. I'll end things with Mei-ling. I'll do whatever it takes to restore our family's honor.
There was a heavy silence at the other end of the line, broken only by the distant sounds of traffic and the faint murmur of reporters clamoring for a story. Zhang held his breath, waiting for his grandfather's response, dreading what it might be.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, his grandfather spoke, his voice softened with resignation.
"You have a lot to make up for, Zhang," he said, his tone weary with the weight of his years.
"But if you're truly sorry, if you're willing to do whatever it takes to redeem yourself, then perhaps there's hope for you yet."
Zhang felt a surge of relief wash over him, mingled with gratitude for his grandfather's begrudging forgiveness. He knew he had a long road ahead of him, filled with challenges and obstacles, but for the first time since the scandal broke, he dared to hope that redemption was possible.
"Thank you, grandfather," Zhang said, his voice choked with emotion.
"I won't let you down, I promise."
With those words hanging in the air between them, Zhang ended the call, steeling himself for the difficult journey that lay ahead, determined to prove himself worthy of his grandfather's forgiveness. The guards who stood against the reporters created a path for him to make through with the lights and questions that burst from the reporters and with all that, Zhang stepped out of the car from the back seat after the door unfurled with his chin up high.
As Zhang stepped up to the podium, the weight of the world seemed to settle on his shoulders. The glare of the cameras, and the hushed whispers of the reporters, all served as a stark reminder of the scandal that had engulfed his life. Mei-ling, his mistress, her name a thorn in his side, her presence a stain on his reputation. Yet here he was, ready to face the storm head-on, to confront the accusations and the judgment of the world.
"Good morning, everyone," Zhang began, his voice steady despite the turmoil raging within him. His face curved with a smile.
"I stand before you today not as the man you think you know, but as someone who has made grave mistakes, mistakes that have hurt those closest to me and tarnished the reputation of my family and our company."
The room was silent, every eye fixed on Zhang, waiting for him to reveal the truth behind the scandal that had dominated the headlines for weeks.
"I want to address the allegations that have been made against me,"
Zhang continued, his gaze unwavering as he braced himself for the inevitable backlash.
"Yes, it is true that I was involved in a relationship with Mei-ling, a relationship that I deeply regret and for which I take full responsibility."
A murmur rippled through the crowd, a mixture of shock and disbelief at Zhang's admission. But he pressed on, determined to lay bare the truth, no matter how painful it might be.
I know that what I did was wrong, Zhang admitted, his voice tinged with remorse.
I betrayed the trust of my family, my colleagues, and most importantly, my wife. I allowed myself to be consumed by selfish desires, blinded by the illusion of happiness that Mei-ling offered me.
The room was silent now, the gravity of Zhang's words hanging heavy in the air. He could feel the weight of judgment bearing down upon him, but he refused to falter, refused to let fear dictate his actions.
"I stand before you today not to make excuses or seek sympathy," Zhang declared, his voice ringing with conviction.
I stand here to apologize to my wife, to my family, to everyone who has been hurt by my actions. I am truly sorry for the pain and suffering I have caused.
A reporter raised their hand, their voice cutting through the stillness of the room.
"Mr. Zhang, do you have any regrets about your relationship with Mei-ling?"
Zhang hesitated for a moment, his thoughts turning to the whirlwind romance that had led him down this path of destruction.
"Of course, I have regrets, he replied, his voice tinged with sadness. "Regrets for the pain I've caused, regrets for the choices I've made. But I also believe that every mistake we make, every misstep we take, has the potential to teach us valuable lessons about ourselves and the world around us.
Another reporter spoke up, their tone more accusatory this time.
"How do you plan to repair the damage done to your family and your company's reputation?"
Zhang squared his shoulders, his resolve hardening with each passing moment.
"I know that rebuilding trust will not be easy, and it will take time," he admitted.
But I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make amends, to earn back the respect and trust of those I have hurt. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our family and our company emerge from this ordeal stronger than ever before.
The press conference stretched on, the questions and accusations coming fast and furious, each one a painful reminder of the consequences of Zhang's actions. But through it all, he remained resolute, his determination unwavering in the face of adversity.
As the conference drew to a close, Zhang stepped away from the podium, his heart heavy with the weight of his confession, yet strangely buoyed by the knowledge that he had finally taken the first step toward redemption. The road ahead would be long and arduous, filled with obstacles and challenges, but for the first time in weeks, Zhang dared to hope that there might be light at the end of the tunnel. He had finished his speech leaving the reporters who had more than one question, and he made his way, since there was a board meeting that was to happen in an hour.
