As I scanned the crowded room, my eyes landed on Sophia, who was holding a drink and swaying to the music with an unsteady grace. She looked like she was getting herself drunk, and I couldn't help but wonder why. Tyler, her new boyfriend, was nowhere to be seen, so I decided to walk up to her, curiosity getting the better of me. "Oh, Robin," she slurred, her words dripping with sarcasm and a hint of bitterness. "I did know that I'd get into you tonight. A party at your home? I knew this meeting would definitely happen." Her eyes locked onto mine, a challenge sparkling within them. I raised an eyebrow, amused by her drunken state and the audacity that came with it. "You look devastated, Sophia. Is it the drink or something else?" I asked jokingly, trying to mess with her, my tone light and teasing. Sophia's face twisted in annoyance, her lips curling into a snarl. "Fuck off, Robin!" she snapped, her voice rising above the music, her words laced with venom. I chuckled, enjoying the exchange, the banter that had always been a hallmark of our complicated relationship. "Wow, someone just gotta keep herself together. I wonder whether she's getting dumped or something!" I continued joking, trying to get a rise out of her, my eyes glinting with amusement. Sophia's eyes flashed with anger, her face reddening, but then she seemed to compose herself, a sugary sweet smile spreading across her face. "Tyler would be here in a minute," she said, her voice dripping with sweetness, a hint of triumph. "He just went to bring me some drink. Are you a fan of his too? Maybe I can introduce you." I laughed, skeptical, my eyes rolling heavenward. "I don't think that's going to happen, pretty face. Isn't your boy the one dancing over there?" I pointed to Tyler, who was rolling around on the floor, clearly way too drunk, his movements erratic and uncoordinated. Sophia's face turned bright red with embarrassment as she followed my gaze, her eyes widening in horror. Tyler was indeed making a fool of himself, stumbling and staggering to the music, his antics drawing attention from the surrounding crowd. "Shut up, Robin!" Sophia hissed, her eyes blazing with anger, her voice low and menacing. I grinned, enjoying the upper hand, the satisfaction of having gotten under her skin. "Looks like someone's having a great time. You might want to go take care of him, Sophia. He seems to need some assistance." My words were laced with sarcasm, my tone dripping with mockery. Sophia's face twisted in frustration, her eyes flashing with anger, before she stormed off towards Tyler, leaving me chuckling to myself, the music and laughter swirling around me. The night was definitely getting interesting, and I couldn't wait to see what other drama unfolded. As I headed to refill my drink, I noticed Sophia storming towards Sarah, her expression dark and menacing, like a thunderstorm brewing on the horizon. I knew this was going to be a disaster, and my instincts screamed at me to intervene, to prevent the impending collision. But before I could reach them, Sophia was already standing before Sarah, her voice dripping with venom, like a snake spitting poison. "You think you're so special, don't you, Sarah?" Sophia sneered, her words laced with malice, her tone dripping with condescension. "You think you can just waltz in here and steal the spotlight, like you're some kind of queen?" Sarah tried to remain calm, her eyes locked on Sophia's, but I could see the hurt and confusion etched on her face, like a canvas painted with uncertainty. "Sophia, I don't know what you're talking about," she said, her voice steady, but laced with a hint of fear. Sophia laughed, a cold, mirthless sound, like the crackling of ice. "Don't play dumb, Sarah. You know exactly what I'm talking about. You're just a pathetic little wannabe, trying to be me, trying to steal my thunder." Sarah's eyes began to well up with tears, and I knew I had to act fast, to prevent the situation from escalating further. But before I could reach them, Sophia delivered the final blow, like a dagger to the heart. "You'll never be asked out by anyone, you're probably going to enjoy prom alone, Sarah. You're not even in the same league as me. You're just a nobody, a mere mortal, trying to reach the gods." Sarah's face crumpled, like a fragile flower crushed by a heavy boot, and she turned and ran, dashing out of the party like a deer fleeing from a predator. I rushed after her, following her outside into the cool night air, like a guardian angel trying to protect her from harm. "Sarah, wait!" I called out, catching up to her on the porch, my voice echoing through the night. She turned to me, tears streaming down her face like a river, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy. "I just can't take it, Robin. I feel so humiliated, so worthless." I pulled her into a hug, holding her close like a protective shield, trying to absorb her pain and sorrow. "You don't deserve that, Sarah. Sophia's just jealous of you, jealous of your beauty, your kindness, your intelligence." Sarah pulled back, her eyes searching mine, like a lost soul seeking guidance. "Why would she be jealous of me?" I smiled, trying to reassure her, to make her see her own worth. "Because you're amazing, Sarah. You're kind, smart, and beautiful, inside and out. Sophia can't compete with that, so she tries to bring you down, to make herself feel better." Sarah smiled weakly, and I could see the doubt lingering in her eyes, like a shadow cast by a flickering candle. But I knew I had to keep reassuring her, to make her see her own worth, to help her rise above Sophia's venomous words. "Come on, let's get out of here," I said, taking her hand, leading her away from the party, away from Sophia's toxic influence. "We'll go somewhere else, somewhere better, somewhere you can shine." Sarah nodded, and together we walked away from the party, leaving Sophia's venomous words behind, like a dark cloud dissipating in the sunlight.
