Chapter 17: Unexpected Visit.

The next morning, as I was savoring my breakfast with Genie, we heard a knock at the door. I wasn't expecting anyone, thinking it might be my neighbor dropping by to borrow something or chat about the latest community news. I got up from my chair, wiping my mouth with a napkin, and headed for the door, wondering who it could be.
"Who could that be?" I wondered aloud, opening the door to reveal Emily standing before me with a radiant smile. She looked stunning, her hair styled perfectly, and her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Good morning, James!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with warmth. "May I come in?"
"Of course, Emily! Come on in," I replied, opening the door wide for her to enter. I stepped aside, allowing her to pass, and couldn't help but notice the sweet scent of her perfume.
As she stepped inside, I suddenly remembered that Emily knew nothing about Genie, my permanent guest. Panic set in as I frantically searched for a way to signal Genie to disappear without arousing Emily's suspicion. My mind raced, thinking of a convincing excuse, but nothing came to mind.
"Oh God, I'm screwed," I thought, my heart racing.
I tried to redirect Emily's attention towards the other areas of the house, attempting to steer her away from Genie. "Hey, Emily, come check out the new living room! I think you'll love the changes," I said, trying to sound casual.
But Emily was no fool. She sensed my nervous behavior and raised an eyebrow. "James, what's wrong? You're acting strange," she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.
I forced a laugh, trying to play it cool. "Nothing, nothing. Just a bit surprised to see you here so early," I replied, attempting to brush off her concern.
Emily's gaze wandered around the room, taking in the new furniture and decor. "Wow, James, you've done an amazing job! This place looks stunning," she exclaimed, her eyes wide with admiration.
Genie, still visible, smiled warmly at Emily, who remained oblivious to his presence. I shot him a pleading glance, willing him to disappear, but he simply shrugged and continued to enjoy the scene.
"Thanks, Emily," I said, trying to keep the conversation going. "I've been working hard to get everything just right."
As Emily continued to explore the house, showering me with compliments and admiration, I grew increasingly anxious. How could I explain Genie's presence without revealing the truth? I thought about introducing him as a friend or a contractor, but that would raise more questions.
"James, this is incredible," Emily said, running her hand over the new kitchen counter. "You have such great taste."
I smiled, feeling trapped. "Thanks, Emily. I'm just glad you like it."
Genie, seemingly amused by my predicament, leaned against the wall, observing the scene with interest. He crossed his arms, a sly grin spreading across his face. I shot him a warning glance, but he simply winked and continued to enjoy the show.
I knew I had to think fast, come up with a convincing explanation for Genie's presence. But for now, I was stuck, watching Emily marvel at our home's transformation, completely unaware of the magical secret lurking in plain sight.
As the minutes ticked by, my anxiety grew. I needed a solution, and fast, before Emily discovered Genie and my life became even more complicated.
As Emily continued her tour of the house, her eyes suddenly landed on the two plates on the dining table, signaling that someone else had shared a meal with me. She stopped dead in her tracks, her gaze fixed on the plates, and then turned around to face me with a questioning look.
"Who's the other plate for?" she asked, her voice laced with curiosity and a hint of suspicion.
I was lost for words, my mind racing for a plausible explanation. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. I was trapped, unable to think of a convincing response.
But before I could stutter out a reply, Genie sprang into action. He emerged from the hallway, pretending to come out of the toilet, and acted taken aback when he saw Emily.
"Oh, hi there!" he exclaimed, flashing a charming smile. "I didn't know James had company. I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
Emily's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze darting between Genie and me. She looked puzzled, unsure of what to make of this sudden appearance.
"I'm John," Genie continued, extending his hand in a friendly gesture. "James' high school buddy. We reconnected yesterday when I saw him dropping off Lily. We hung out last night, and I ended up crashing here."
Emily's eyes lingered on Genie's outstretched hand before shaking it briefly. Her handshake was firm, but her expression remained skeptical.
"Nice to meet you, John," she said, her tone neutral, betraying no emotion.
Genie turned to me, a conspiratorial grin spreading across his face.
"James didn't mention me, did he?" he asked, chuckling, as if sharing a private joke.
I shook my head, trying to play along, hoping to convince Emily of this fabricated story.
"No, he didn't," Emily replied, her eyes still fixed on me, searching for any sign of deception.
Genie launched into a detailed story about our supposed high school days, our reunion, and his decision to spend the night. He spoke with conviction, weaving a tale so believable that even I found myself getting caught up in it.
As Genie finished his tale, Emily turned to me, her eyes searching for confirmation. She looked uncertain, unsure of what to believe.
"Is that true?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, her eyes boring into mine.
I nodded, trying to appear nonchalant, hoping to reassure her.
"Yeah, that's right," I said, attempting to sound casual, as if it was no big deal.
Emily's gaze lingered on me for a moment, as if trying to read my mind. Then, she turned back to Genie.
"Well, it was nice meeting you, John," she said, her tone polite, but still laced with a hint of skepticism. "I should get going."
Genie nodded, his smile unwavering.
"Great meeting you too, Emily. Take care, and maybe we'll catch up again soon."
As Emily headed for the door, I breathed a sigh of relief. Genie's quick thinking had saved me from a potentially awkward situation.
"Thanks, Genie," I whispered, as Emily closed the door behind her. "You're a lifesaver."
Genie grinned, winking at me.
"Anytime, Master. Now, let's get back to breakfast. We've got a lot to discuss."
