Chapter 21: Troubled.

As I sat amidst the darkness, tears streaming down my face, a spark of determination suddenly ignited within me. Crying wouldn't solve anything; I needed to take action. I had to find Ethan, no matter what it took. The thought of facing him, of explaining and apologizing, filled me with trepidation, but I steeled myself for the challenge.
With newfound resolve, I sprang into action, my heart racing with anticipation. I would search every nook and cranny of the college premises until I found him. I had to explain, to apologize, to make things right. The weight of my mistakes bore down on me, but I pushed forward, driven by a sense of urgency.
First, I rushed to his room, my feet pounding the stairs like a drumbeat. I knocked on the door, my knuckles rapping out a staccato rhythm. But there was no answer. I tried the handle, but it was locked, a physical barrier between us. My heart sank, but I refused to give up.
Next, I sprinted to the hostel rooftop, our secret haven, where we had shared countless moments, laughter, and tears. The wind whipped through my hair as I scanned the deserted rooftop, my eyes scouring every inch. But Ethan was nowhere to be found. The emptiness echoed through my soul.
Undeterred, I hastened to the bench where we shared our deepest secrets, our dreams, and our fears. It was empty, a haunting reminder of our connection, now frayed and fragile. I sat down, running my hands over the wooden slats, feeling the grooves and scratches that told our story.
I dashed to the old oak tree in the park, our special spot, where we had carved our initials, a symbol of our bond. But Ethan wasn't there either. The tree's branches creaked in the wind, echoing my despair, a mournful sigh that seemed to whisper, "He's gone."
I scoured the college grounds, searching every corner, every hidden spot, every place we had ever been together. I asked students if they'd seen him, but no one had. My anxiety grew with each passing minute, a slow-burning fire that threatened to consume me.
In desperation, I pulled out my phone and texted him, my fingers flying across the keyboard like a pianist playing a frantic melody.
"Ethan, please talk to me. I need to explain. I'm sorry. I was wrong to trust Rachel. I know I hurt you, and I'll do anything to make it right."
But the screen remained blank, no response, no acknowledgement. The silence was deafening, a heavy blanket that suffocated me.
I tried calling him, my heart racing with anticipation, my fingers trembling as I dialed his number. But it rang, rang, rang, until his voicemail picked up, a robotic voice that seemed to mock me.
"Ethan, please...just talk to me. I need to explain. I'll do anything to fix this."
Silence.
He was shutting me out, and I couldn't blame him. But I refused to give up. I had to make things right. I owed it to him, to us, to our friendship.
As the night wore on, my search continued, fueled by determination and a hint of desperation. I would find Ethan, and I would make him listen. I would apologize, explain, and plead for forgiveness. I would do whatever it took to repair our bond, to restore our friendship.
As I entered the lecture hall, my eyes scanned the room, searching for Ethan's familiar figure. And then, I saw him, sitting at his usual spot at the back, his expression unreadable. His eyes seemed to bore into the lecturer, who was about to begin, his jaw set in a determined line. I made my way towards him, my heart racing with anticipation, my mind replaying the events of the previous day.
"Ethan, can we talk?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, as I slid into the seat beside him.
He nodded curtly, his eyes never leaving the lecturer, his expression a mask of indifference.
"I'm so sorry, Ethan," I started, my words tumbling out in a rush, as I fumbled with my bag, my hands shaking slightly. "I was wrong to tell Rachel about your past, about Sarah. I know I betrayed your trust, and I'm deeply sorry."
Ethan's expression remained impassive, his voice detached, like a stranger's.
"Why the apology, Amanda? It's not a secret. Sarah knows, her friends probably know...it's not a big deal."
I was taken aback by his nonchalance, my mind racing with questions. Didn't he care? Wasn't he upset?
"But...I thought you'd be upset," I stammered, my eyes searching his face for any hint of emotion. "You've been avoiding me, and I thought it was because of what I did."
Ethan's gaze finally met mine, his eyes cold, expressionless, like a winter landscape.
"I'm not mad about that, Amanda. That's not why I've been distant."
My mind reeled, confusion etched on my face, as I struggled to understand.
"Then what's wrong? Why are you treating me like this?"
Ethan's voice dropped, his words slicing through me like a knife, leaving me breathless.
"Sarah reached out to me last night."
My heart skipped a beat, my breath caught in my throat, as if time had frozen.
"What? What did she say?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, my eyes wide with shock.
Ethan's expression twisted, a hint of pain flickering across his face, like a shadow on a moonlit night.
"She wants to meet up, talk about us, about what happened. She claims she's changed, that she regrets what she did."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my mind reeling, as if I was trapped in a nightmare.
"Oh, Ethan...I'm so sorry," I whispered, my heart aching for him, for the pain he'd endured, for the uncertainty that lay ahead.
Ethan's gaze drifted away, his voice barely above a whisper, like a sigh on the wind.
"I don't know what to do, Amanda. Part of me wants to see her again, to confront her, to get closure, to be there for her...but another part is scared, scared of getting hurt again because of the sight."
My heart went out to him, my soul aching with empathy.
"Ethan, I'm here for you, no matter what," I promised, my voice firm, my eyes locked on his. "We'll face this together, okay? We'll figure it out, together."
Ethan's eyes locked onto mine, a glimmer of confusion flickering in their depths, like a black orb in the darkness.
"Thanks, Amanda. Just...thanks, but just like I did informed you earlier, you've no chance when Sarah's in the picture, I feel like I should apologize for what's to come."
