Chapter 19: Moonstruck

He never thought a carnival would be their rendezvous. That hang-out was quite unexpected but something he always longed for. Saying his heart is full is a pretty ambiguous phrase, but it was, literally doing it's own somersaults, the reason for his endless chuckles. It was painstakingly pleasurable moment, like the blood reaches his lips, putting on that smile. His heart burns in a good way and he silently wished for that night not to end.
"So--" Jungwon took the move to clear out the dead air. "What's the first task? Are we up for the ride or you want to hit the game booths?"
Looking at his giggling face, Hyejin was put into a surprise halt. She's facing Yang Jungwon, the Enhypen's leader and they are about to have a moment together but she wouldn't call it a date nor a tryst. Thinking about the things that's about to happen, it caused her to pace back and quickly slides her hoodie on to conceal her face.
"What?" Jungwon asked, giggling with his eyes closed like a laughing kitty.
"I don't want to get into a tight spot. We might get photographed. Better be safe than sorry." she anxiously answered.
"Then maybe, I'll put this on too." he said, slipping his bunny hug on. "Don't worry, I know how this is done. I'm not careless like Heeseung Hyung is."
"You have done this before? With who?" the shock on Hyejin's face is profound.
"No." Jungwon laughed a little harder. "I mean, after Heeseung Hyung was caught on a dating scandal with Choi Aerin, Yuki-nim told us to be cautious with our actions especially in public places. I've never done this before. This is the first time."
"Then don't you think we're in a desperate strait? Or up the creek without a paddle?" her anxiety doubled up after hearing Jungwon unveiling a fact.
"Well, if you're really that worried being caught in a photo with me, let's head on to the rides first. It's 10pm, the carnival usually gets emptied approaching midnight. That's the best time to strike out the game booths."
Thinking about rides, it immediately pressed an alarm button, scaring the hell out of her. But visualizing herself in the middle of a difficult plight because she chose to spend time with Yang Jungwon is more alarming than the rides itself. Hyejin took his hand and pulled him fast to take that whirl.
Feeling the tight grip of Hyejin's hand against his, Jungwon wished the night will froze in time, to spend a little more time, but that would be ridiculous. He followed like she win him very easily, clear as day, and upon getting his senses back, he is sitting right next to her, waiting for the ride to commence.
"You're not scared of heights, aren't you?"
"To tell you honestly, this is one of my greatest fears. But I'd rather fly high in the air than being on the headline the next morning."
Hyejin latched unto his wrist and he was quick to understand she wanted some comfort. He's dying to hold her hand but he had no right to do that just yet. Instead, he took his earphones out and slipped it on Hyejin's right ear. The other one onto his ear.
"Listening to a music can help ease the tension out. Just hold on to my wrist. It's going to be okay. You're with me."
The track he's about to play is a new somber song with a tempo of 88 beats per minute. The track runs for two minutes at most and has a powerful energy that would certainly sweep someone off their feet hearing it for the first time. The lyrics match the song's sound as it talks about sharing the night with someone special. Spoiling it is forbidden and without thinking twice, Jungwon is about to break that rule.
The ride detached from the latch creating a sudden bump. Jungwon heard a small scream coming from Hyejin's mouth. The rollercoaster starts to elevate and he can feel her hold her breath to wait in an anxious way to see what happens next. Feeling her strengthen her grip onto his arms now, is actually the sign he's been waiting for.
Without any words and at the point of waiting to slither helplessly down the slope, Jungwon hit the music on and slowly, unknowingly, their hands found each other, intertwining, with their fingers interlaced in a solid clutch.
He's not lying when he said that music can ease the nerves away. Hearing the unfamiliar song feels like being transported to heaven, meeting the moon and the stars. Whoever composed the song is a total genius. Hyejin was in disbelief by how her fears suddenly mollified. It could be the song or Jungwon's tight but consoling grip or maybe by just looking at him - screaming and giggling at same time. It's a rollercoaster ride indeed. She's being weaved to the sky, back to the earth and her emotions were going on a loose thread.
"Wooh! That was so satisfying!" Jungwon giggled his heart out after the endless spin. "Are you okay, Hyejin-a?"
"Y-Yeah. T-That song was so powerful." she answered, suppressing a gasp. "What was that called?"
He just shrugged and went on with a smile. Might sound cliché but everytime he smiles, she's losing her train of thoughts. Having it realized the situation she was in, Hyejin knows she's walking on thin ice.
"There's still a lot of people at the games booths. Come on! I got another idea."
She run down with his hurrying steps without any clue of what to do next. It's as if Jungwon has taken control and she likes the feel of it. It's the authority that's feeding the thrills but of a good sort. Hyejin was lost for words after seeing what they have set their feet into.
"Let's have some treasured keepsake." Jungwon uttered, still garnering the charge.
Jungwon pulled her close, adjusting their stances to take the center spot. Facing the camera is an easy task for him but Hyejin felt the opposite. He saw the stillness, like being unsure of what to do.
"Why don't we do a heart pose?" Jungwon suggested. "Like this." he went to open his hand to create a half heart shape.
Being in a photo booth with Yang Jungwon is the most intimate moment thus far. It's the one thing that others would die for and she was there, with him. She better not waste that chance.
Hyejin puts her formed hand unto his, completing a heart. She saw his face beamed a little more. For when her eyes are so drawn to him, in the midst of uncertainty, her serenity rises, her fear mutes, and her best self emerges to take charge. She have in awe of him ever since and suddenly, without warning, they're painting the town red and have a whale of a time.
"Here it goes. 1, 2, 3.. Say saranghae." Jungwon chuckled with his own chaff.
Hyejin was amused by the feign. She covered her eyes while giggling hard. The flashes comes down like an electric smirk and she let go, throwing the skittinish out of the window. She thought the results will come out horrible but she was mistaken. The snapshots came perfect, capturing their best and happiest smiles.
"This wasn't bad after all." she said, holding her thin copy.
"Nope. Not a chance. This is the best picture I ever had by far. I did this once though but--"
"You did? W-With who?" she was aghast by another confession.
Jungwon laughs again. He's really a guy that's full of laughter, the sound of it goes like bells tinkling in the wind. He pulled out another photo and showed it to her. He was really with another girl.
"She's pretty." Hyejin pronounced, sighed hard to stop the frown.
"They say we cannot pass as siblings. Noona looks like Appa while I look more like my Eomma."
"Oh!" with eyes wide, Hyejin stepped back, veiling her mouth. "That's your sister?! I thought she's--"
"You thought what? That she's my girlfriend?" Jungwon put an end to her intrusive thoughts. "We're allowed to have one but with precautions and it's too difficult to date at the moment. I don't want to suffer the same consequence as what Heeseung Hyung is going through right now. And I don't know if she feels the same way too--'
After obtaining the knowledge that he almost had a tongue slip, Jungwon halts himself, covering his trivial mistake with a grin. He hastily peek out the photo booth and got the indication that a situation is no longer dangerous. By then, he again pulled Hyejin out, in a gentle way and the next thing he knows, she's jumping up and down with her high-pitched scream, while he is breaking out in a cold sweat, hauling up the plushie out of the machine.
"Aaaah! Daebak! You got it, Jungwonie!"
Hyejin's scream was some kind of bliss, like he was immediately put into a state of euphoria that goes beyond what is considered typical. Jungwon brushed the sweat out of his forehead after clutching the cuddly toy in safety.
"I didn't thought for a moment you're good at controlling the claw machine. That plushie is so cute!" Hyejin still hasn't recovered for the amazement.
"Who told you this is mine?" Jungwon asked back, another grin's about to break lose. "This is for you."
It was to the point that Hyejin considered the moment as the best night of her entire existence and she never thought she would find it in the company of Yang Jungwon. It goes so fast that it's making her greatly upset thinking the pleasure is about to end. Clinging to the toy, Hyejin took her deepest sigh as she said her goodbyes.
"I really had a great night. Thank you, but I need to go back to the dorm."
"I need to go back too. I still have to make a head count."
Hyejin chuckled remembering what Sunghoon had said. "You better make it fast. Your members are probably snoring by now."
"I'll walk you home first. Don't say no."
He really holds the power to take someone to just agree. She can now understand why he became leader. Jungwon can get a person's trust so easily and following his order isn't a difficult thing to do. It seems like he has a kind of hypnosis and she apparently loses the power to disagree.
"My solo competition is in two days." she told him, like a happy kid in a candy store.
"Heeseung Hyung's hiatus is over. He's coming back in two days."
Hyejin bites her lip, disallowing any words to splurge out of her mouth. It's so ridiculous to say that for an invite. She shouldn't said it in the first place.
"But maybe I can squeeze it in. I cannot commit but I know you're going to be awesome." Jungwon said it in the most sincere way, hoping for a recoup.
Their exchange of words are so modest but why is she standing right next to her door so fast? Does time really went brisk when you're with the person you like? It's a kind of puzzle that's impossible to complete.
"Good night, Won." she shyly uttered, still hugging the toy, as she took a last glance of his pretty face.
"Moonstruck." he rather said.
"W-What?"
"The song's called Moonstruck. We're about to release it soon. You're the first girl to listen to it."
“Moonstruck,” has lyrics conveying the person's wish to take their beloved on a moonlit date night because they are frenzied by a certain person. Moonstruck means being awestruck that you lose your capacity to do anything normally. And that was him at the moment.
"W-Why--" Hyejin cannot put her thoughts into words. The surprise took her away, wrapping her mouth for another gasp. "That was so beautiful."
Jungwon smiled back. No doubt Moonstruck is beautiful. It's a masterpiece. But he beg to differ. Moonstruck comes only second. First, is her.
