Chapter 8: Lovely Liar

"That strap will get to decide who are you going to dance tonight."
Jungwon's cat-like eyes grows in circles, looking at Hyejin as if awaiting a deeper explanation. The Matchmaker's Ball is exactly living up with it's name - to bring together suitable partners in a romantic relationship. And that moment he began to realize, Yeji lied to Sunghoon because he'll definitely won't allow her to attend such a romantically inclined event.
"T-This thing? H-How?" Jungwon wanted to explode in a nervous laugh.
"Well--" Hyejin leaned closer to show him his own strap. "The moment they put this thing on you, they will gear this up and it will locked onto your wrist."
"Then?"
When the ball commence, the lights will turn off. One by one, the straps will light up. Whoever gets the same color with you is your match."
Jungwon was appalled, mouth opened in a silent gasp. "S-So, there's a possibility that my match is you--?" he stopped, kind of impulse to said it fast. "Or maybe not." he was quick to take it back seeing she's not wearing anything.
"I don't have it. I just came here to help with the preparations and all. I told you I'm not a social person."
"Oh!" Jungwon was appalled. Heart sunk he couldn't believe the twist.
Hyejin replied with a chuckle. Her face beamed with shyness as she lowered her sight. Her cautious spirit and undefined grace are just enough to call her beautiful. Park Sunghoon's cousin is just so beautiful, not just a beauty, she made the space around them beautiful too,
"It's weird if it's going to be a stranger." his lip does a light twitch.
"Not weird I guess. Look at those eager faces." Hyejin teased, turned her sight to the bunch of smitten girls. "Dancing with the Enhypen's leader is like hitting the jackpot."
Jungwon's face lighted up and crispy laughed escaped again. "Nah." he humbly rejects the idea. "But you know, it's going to be cool if it's you, though."
Her face goes undeniably brisk. How it became warm so suddenly left her stumped. Hyejin cannot accurately describe in words why she always feel shaken being near Yang Jungwon.
"I don't get to experience a real prom, so yeah, let's see how it goes." Jungwon carried on with the rib, smile is not stopping like he was born to smile all his life.
Hyejin don't know how he do it. But Yang Jungwon is the coolest man as far as she could see, so calm and free from emotional or mental agitation. Being present in the Matchmaker's Ball, in an unfamiliar town, will make someone freak out and run for his life. But by a curious twist of chance, it goes different for the Enhypen's leader. He finds joy in everything. He's cool about anything. Hyejin couldn't help to admire his mindset. Truly, a leader.
"Oppa! Eonnie!"
Yeji is rushing to their direction, smile's not fading as she speaks. "The girls are going nuts about Jungwon Oppa's match tonight." she said, panting.
"Hey, brat. I couldn't believe you outsmarted your brother and put someone on a crazy situation just to get what you want." Hyejin couldn't help the scolding.
"It's okay. Jungwon Oppa will certainly cover for me. And you too, Eonnie!" she grinningly blurted, high level of excitement was seen on her face. "Oh, it's starting now. See you later! Anyeong!" Yeji sprinted to the direction of the girls on the other side.
"Y-You take that side." Hyejin told Jungwon, voice goes a little cracky. "I think I have no business here anymore. Have fun on your first prom, leader-nim."
"Wait. Hyejin-a--"
She didn't bother to answer. She needs to drag her feet out before it'll turn pitch black and revealed the truth behind her long topcoat. She's also wearing one but seeing Yang Jungwon's wrist binded with the strap, Hyejin was covered with the strongest fear, something she realized only for the first time.
That short conversation is only a chance to connect and know him even more but the monster appears telling her to run ahead. And as she takes it in, all the while the monster, speaks of heading for the hills.
It's Yang Jungwon. Even if he's going to act like a normal person, all giggly and funny, still, he is the great Yang Jungwon. The leader of the fast rising K-pop group dominating the whole world. If it's not that fearsome enough, she won't try for an escape.
And then darkness came like the thick velvet curtains. Hyejin halted feet as her heart followed next. She miscalculated her long, hurrying steps, seizing a flight.
The dark room, had a relaxed feeling, as if it was a heart-beat at rest but she felt otherwise. Hyejin felt as if the air moved fast paced and the aroma of scented candles around couldn't comfort her panic-stricken stance from deep within.
In split seconds, bright flickers began to illuminate the gloom, like a series of light from the sky between full night and sunrise. Her soft woven fabric couldn't hide the brightening hue, as if it ignite it's color for all the people to see. Hyejin quicky conceal it but the unlit room is beating it. Her hand, covering her wrist, is twitching in deep color blue.
"I saw that. I'm sorry, you can't run."
Hyejin's big eyes grew a little bigger hearing Chief Kim's ringing voice.
"I-I--" she sucks while panicking, a real definition of at lost for words.
"You can't go out. You'll ruin the game. The dance won't commence if one person cannot find his pair. Go back and find your match."
In that dark room is no longer a scene from black and white movie. It turned in a twinkling monochrome, bringing brilliant colors in different shades, The silhouettes are already more discernible and Jungwon, who is still confused by the whole idea, starts to search for his pair.
Everyone has already found their match, standing beside each other in paired glitters, while he remained unsettled, like a cat astray, moving away aimlessly from the right course, piercing through the semidarkness searching for his balance.
Like their group's tagline "EN-Connect", matchmaking is also bringing a final line - to connect dramatically. A twinkling blue, his favorite color in every hue, finally appeared. She's standing far away, literally on her feet, unsure of what to do. The matchmaking ball is surely an intimidating game, causing a loss of courage or self-confidence.
But her silhouette speaks volumes in the silence. Jungwon's eyebrows rise in curiosity while approaching the girl. In those slow time as he stepped closer, he watched her move and he knows that she is so much more than a pretty girl. She is some kind of familiar, who tried to run away.
He stood beside her. Their bands are blinking simultaneously now. Jungwon took a quick glance on the girl's face, which is somehow detectable with the light of colors everywhere. He was put to a stop after realizing his sneaking suspicion is entirely correct. Quickly, he was put in high spirits as he tried to control the giggles while standing beside her.
In any moment now, the lights will come alive igniting a once in a lifetime experience. Jungwon's heart races in a more rapid beat, faster than any concert performances he went through. He's a spontaneous speaker, a fearless and brave leader but why does his tongue suddenly recedes?
She lied about her strap. Hyejin, standing in silence beside a man, was secretly swearing at herself for putting herself in a ridiculous plight. She closed her eyes, and will take the confused eyes Jungwon will give her the moment he saw her dancing with another man, or in a much complex and bewildering picture - seeing him dance with another woman.
"Ah, crap." she whispered in self-disgust.
She heard a giggle, a familiar, jumpy laugh, like a sound of a cat's purr. Hyejin froze as her eyes and mouth fell open, just in time the lights reignites.
The steady light comes alive, bringing the vivid colors back. A simultaneous fight for breath was heard as pairs of envious eyes pierced through her stunned form. Hyejin took the courage to finally glance on her match. She stumbled back, body recoiled as if struck by an invisible force with her face contorted with a mix of disbelief and shock. A jolt of surprise had taken hold of her, threatening to spill from her lips in an uncontrollable gasp, just like the other girls around them.
"Y-Yang Jungwon--!"
"You lovely liar." Jungwon chuckled, eyes were lit with amusement, while he shook his head in disbelief.
