Third Person P.O.V
Riley wraps his hands around Aiden’s waist. He pushes her into his body, his gaze fixed on her. She faces him. Her head jerks backwards, recognizing the close gap between them. She furrows her brows and squints her eyes at him, their chins practically touching. Riley remains still, looking at her, his heartbeat resuming. He nibbles his bottom lip, nervously. He flutters his eyes as his cheeks heat up, his lips pursed to a flat line.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Aiden questions. She steps back from his grip and looks around. "That person is gone," she informs as she straightens her jacket.
"Are you ok?" She asks again, facing Riley, who looks around, chewing on his inner cheek.
"Yeah...," He responds quietly, turning aside.
"Your skin has turned red," She states as she sits on the bench nearby.
Riley cups his heated cheeks; he inhales and exhales to calm himself. He looks around again and walks to the bench. He sits on the other end of the bench with joint legs as three-quarter of the seat is occupied by Aiden’s leg. She pulls out her phone and begins to chat with Lisa, who keeps on sending texts asking how everything is going.
While typing, she keeps her gaze fixed on the phone. “Mr. Mintz has a trial tomorrow,” she informs him.
Riley looks at her and returns his gaze to the rushing river in front of them. He doesn't say anything.
"Some people's job is complicated," she states, taking a look at him and back at her phone "And somethings cannot be explained,"
“I understand.” He lifts his right leg and crosses it over his left, his gaze fixed on the lake.
Aiden immediately tosses the phone to the bench and sits straight. She faces his side features "You do?" she asks.
"Yes," he nods in reply and continues "You were right, dad wasn't wrong," he turns to his right facing her "I will talk to him tonight,"
"To apologize?"
"Yes," the corners of his lips twitch upwards to a spontaneous smile "You are really good at advising," his head tilts a bit as his grin widens.
"Is it?" Aiden chuckles and looks straight.
"Yeah, just like a grandma," he jokes grinning ear to ear. Aiden gives him a sidelong stare and sighs a loud as she averts her gaze to nature.
For a brief period, the air surrounding them is devoid of sound. Aiden puts her elbows on her thighs, her fingers interlaced in a clasp. Her thoughts turn to tomorrow. She must securely transport Harry to court and ensure that Riley and Mintz are not pursued.
Riley’s eyes are fixed on the lake, and he steals a glimpse at her every minute.
"What made you regret?" He breaks the stillness by drawing her attention to himself. Aiden reclines and turns to face him.
"It's....,"
"Don't tell me it's none of my business! I’m only asking you to share something with me.," he raises his brows when she sniffles.
"When he died, I couldn't apologize," she says. Her tone is emotionless, as it always is, but she tears down inside every time she thinks about it. “He died to protect me," she says
Riley examines her side features. He has no idea who it is but remains silent, putting his curiosity aside.
"It's my brother," She mentions after a long wait. She faces him and cracks a little smile "I'm going to meet Mr Mintz. Are you coming along?" Aiden stands and stretches her arms. She checks around and walks ahead.
###
The car comes to a halt at the main road’s intersection; they get off. Aiden waves as she crosses the road by the cafe. Her gaze drawn to Mintz, who raises his hand in the café against the translucent glass wall.
"It’s been a long time to have a peaceful conversation with Dad," Riley says as he watches his father grin at them.
Crash!
Riley freezes his eyes widen in horror, his pupils contract in dread at the scene in front of him. Aiden dashes to the cafe, treading on the shattered glass. She moves about with her eyes studying the surroundings. For the first time, her heart hammered. She’d gone through a lot of cases, but none of them had made her nervous about what happened inside. Today, however, she is afraid to look. Terrified to see Mintz sprawled on the ground, blood flowing from his skull, his body in an uncomfortable posture. She squats down gradually. Her hands quiver as she slides her finger beneath his nose to sense his breath, but he doesn’t expel any air.
As he stares at the vehicle that slammed into the cafe, his surroundings darken. He steps forward, his shaky legs grows unstable. His rushing heart and footsteps reverberate in his own ears. He walks with his feeble legs. He attempts to go there, but the edges of his vision darken, and the weight of his body lightens as he can no longer support himself. A faint gasp leaves his lips as his vision blacks out, his body collapses to the road the next second.
People gather around at the incident; the ambulance siren plays in the background. She runs her hand through her hair and stands, letting out a weary sigh. She holds a handful of hair, pulling it out of its roots and looks around as she suspects that something was off in the cafe as the owner was not present and the road was abnormally empty. She buries her face in her hands and slips it down, examining the large vehicle. She approaches it in order to view the driver.
"You are not permitted to go," the familiar cold voice comes from the outside, Eric.
"Are you alright?" Blake rushes in. He holds Aiden’s arms gently and looks into her moistened eyes "I'm glad you are okay," he sighs in relief.
"”I need you to come to the station for interrogation," Eric announces coldly. He glances at Aiden and continues to look around.
Blake takes a step back and retorts, “Why does...?” He stops as Aiden takes his hand.
"Make sure, Riley is safe," she requests and follows the other two officers to the car.
The station is packed with gasps and murmurs. Aiden stares at the bottle of water placed on the table. The passing officers greet her with a salute, as they appreciate their leader’s presence.
"There is blood stain on your face," Ben hands her a tissue. She looks up at him and takes it with a smile. She wipes her cheeks. "Are you okay?" Ben asks as he slides a chair next to Aiden and sits in it.
"He was a good person," she exhales at the thought of Mintz.
“I know,” Ben nods, “He has taken over many cases and never gave up on his clients. Do you recall the last sexual harassment case you looked into?” Aiden nods. “He was the lawyer of that case. he continued to support the victim’s family even after he loss the case.” He remains silent for a while, “You know, Tony was killed,” he shares the news.
"At the harbour right? I read that his manly hood was chopped off," Aiden adds, pretending like unknown.
"Yeah, he deserves it. Whoever did that is surely a hero and....,"
Ahem! Ahem!
The sound of the person clearing his throat distracts their conversation, Aiden and Ben looks straight, she rolls her eyes when Eric strides in, his venomous eyes staring at them. Ben stands and walks away from the sight.
“The leader is still the leader after she is fired,” Eric scoffs “Seems like Miss Aiden is at ease,” he says, looking at the bottle of water and back at her.
Thunderbolts flowing through their glares will brighten the area if they are in the animated world right now.
Eric pulls the chair and sits opposite to Aiden his eyes never leaving her. He places his arms on the table and leans forward.
"You were the only one in the incident, why were you there?" He asks harshly.
Aiden rolls her eyes and remains silent, She grasps the top of the bottle and removes the cap. Relaxing her shoulders she leans back and exhales. She drinks the water leaving the bottle empty.
"Miss Aiden, I request you to answer the questions," Eric clenches his teeth and squints his eyes in rage. "Or else face the consequences,"
“Consequences?” She repeats, as she raises her brows in amusement, “Eric.” She sits straight and places her arms on the table. She leans forward and snickers “You’re questioning me with no evidence that I’m a suspect,” she says, her brow furrowed.
”You’ve still got the same attitude after all that occurred,” Eric snorts, fists clenched, his face flushed. “You’re not just here because of what happened today; you’re also here because of Tony,”
“Tony,” she remarks, curiously, knitting her brows. “Do you at least have evidence for that?” She smirks, “I remember noticing a surveillance camera along the shore.” She offers a piece of information, confident that there is no trace of her.
“Aiden,” Eric shouts, taking the attention of the officers in the room. He slams his hand on the table, creating a loud noise which makes some of them flinch, but Aiden stays unmoved. He stands furiously and points at Aiden “You think I don’t know what kind of a person you are,” He grinds his teeth vigorously. “You are not a good person from the beginning,” he yells, the words rolling down his tongue swiftly.
"I never told that I'm a good person," she sneers "Did I?" She arches a brow.
"You....," He opens the drawer of the table and grabs the pistol, he lifts it up in the air as he leans over the table aiming the gun point at Aiden's forehead in a short distance. The colleagues stand immediately and they gather to the table in astonishment and fear, some of them have their mouth covered in gasps but no one uttered a word in fear. Eric's heavy breaths echoes in the air as he glares straight into her cold black eyes but her action surprises everyone. She never flinches nor moves her shoulders relaxed and her face expresses no sense of fear "You are a monster," Eric whisper growls.
"Sir," Blake retorts running to the table, his presence reduces the tension in the scene, Eric stands straight and turns to his right when Blake tosses three pen drives on the table "The footage shows that Aiden was with the victim's son," Blake explains.
Eric places the pistol on the table and takes the pen drives, he takes a glimpse at Aiden who stands.
"Question me with evidence," she walks to the side in front of Blake and stands in front of Eric. She stares up at him. "And yeah," she snorts "I'm a monster like you but the only difference is that I get rid of scumbags and you are one of them."Download Novelah App
