Evan pinches the bridge of his nose and walks to and fro. He furrows his brows and stops in front of Aiden and Riley who are seated beside each other on the sofa.
“Something is off,” he exhales observing them.
“What’s missing?” Riley asks curiously.
“It’s just…,” Evan points at Riley and at Aiden “You both don’t look good together.” He sighs. “How come other couples look perfect together even if there is nothing between them,” he mumbles to himself.
Riley knits his brows and turns to his left taking a glance at Aiden who stares at an empty space. Her expressionless expression clearly shows she is uninterested. His lips move to an uneven smile when he faces Evan.
“I get you,” he nods realizing the stiff air with in them.
Evan moves his hand and gestures them to move “Sit a little closer,” he requests.
Riley moves closer, his shoulder touches hers. She takes a glance at him and leans forward.
“I doubt whether people would believe your relationship” Evan continues his eyes never leaves them.
He sits on the single sofa and grabs his phone from the table, “Anyways, we have no other choice. I’ll update a post about your relationship and tomorrow let’s go on live.” The environment takes over silence for few minutes while Evan gets busy with the phone “Give me yours,” he moves his hand forward and Riley hands over his phone.
“You can post something as well,” Evan looks at Aiden.
Riley raises his brows at her as she remains silent for a while “You don’t have to do it, if you don’t want to,” Riley shrugs. Aiden hands over her phone to Evan.
“Your password….,” he stops when he switches on her phone.
“I don’t have one,” she informs and moves away from Riley.
“You really don’t lock your phone,” Riley exclaims, his eyes wide open.
“Is that something to be surprised?” She rolls her eyes.
“Of course, it is.” He flicks his finger. “Don’t tell me you don’t use social media as well,” he laughs.
“Isn’t it a waste of time,” she states as she sits straight and looks at Evan who is astonished “Why do you all look so shocked,” she asks, confused.
“Come on,” Riley stands and steps forward. He grabs her phone from Evan’s grip and looks at the screen: the random scenery wallpaper. “In which era are you? You use mobile only to call and share messages” he chuckles “Even my granny is on Facebook and Instagram.”
“Wasn’t it why the mobiles were invented? To talk and message“ she stands and pulls her phone from his grip “If there is nothing else, I’ll take my leave,” she picks her jacket and strolls to the door.
“Alright, take care of everything,” Riley hits on Evan’s shoulder and walks to the shelf. He grabs his car keys.
“Where are you heading?” she questions as she ties the lace of her boots.
“Hangover,” Riley tosses the key to her which she catches “Follow me,” he walks out.
He gets in the driving seat and waits till she buckles her seatbelt, the car moves out the garage of the apartment. The few seconds of silence excruciating silence disturbs Riley, he hums in rhythm to lift his mood.
“Hey...,” the pulls the brake for the red light “What was your previous job?” he questions.
Aiden moves her eyes from the view outside to Riley “Its none of your business,” she answers dryly.
“I think you were a cop or something,” he turns to face her.
She nods. Aiden flinches when he claps his hands to of nowhere.
“So that is why you know to fight,” he says and moves forward in interest “Why did you resign then?” he asks eager for her answer.
“That’s none of your business,” she snaps and looks away.
“It’s none of your business,” he mimics and chuckles at his own actions.
The car comes to a halt by the racing track, the noise of the crowd cheers fills in the cold night air.
“I thought it was something important,” Aiden rolls her eyes.
They get off the car and walk towards the crowd, the dark alley bright with a row of street lights both the sides.
“It ii important.” Riley stretches his arm to warm up “No one can beat me in race,” he lifts his chin high in pride.
“You bet,” she arches a brow perfectly.
His actions pause as he stares at her for a while. His brain takes some time to register her challenge.
The corner of his lips twitch up to a smirk “On what?”
“Dinner,” she raises her brows confidently and breaks her knuckles. She walks ahead and grabs the attention of the crowd.
A group of people walk towards them and pulls Riley closer to them. The environment fills with chats and laughter. He announces the upcoming race and walks to Aiden. He gestures her to step forward. A grin of confidence makes its way on his lips when she stands by the second black car. He waves at his friends, the confident smirk never disappears.
“I will not go easy because you are a girl.” Riley scoffs and gets in the car.
“You don’t have to,” she hops in, buckles the seat belt and turns to her left to see him and there Riley is already looking at her.
He passes her a wink, she rolls her eyes and grips tight on the steering wheel. Their eyes fixed to the person standing in front between the two vehicles.
The engine starts, the noise echoes in the silent air. They drive ahead in a blink of an eye Riley races forward. His inner being in joy, the smirk never leaves his face. The cheers fill in the air.
Riley stares straight at the windscreen taken back. His eyes big as saucers still cannot believe what he saw and his brain still unable to register what happened. As a winner of every, this is his first failure. He jumps out of the car and watches Aiden in the crowd.
“How did she speed up?” he questions himself recalling the scene when she over took him.
Before his friends come to him, he escapes to the car not ready take up the teases as he has always boasted about his speed. He sends a message to Aiden and she arrives after a few minutes. They drive to a restaurant nearby with no word spoken by anyone.
The air between them captures silence again, Aiden looks around the private room of the restaurant, the large room centred with a normal sized wooden table and two chairs opposite, the white painted walls are designed with contrasting colour patterns. She runs her hand through her hair and looks straight at Riley. His eyes fixed on her, still not ready to accept his defeat.
“You were so cool,” he shows a thumbs up. The corners of his lips twitch up to a grin as he leans forward “So...,” he continues, “How do you know to race?” He asks, curious to hear her story.
“It’s none of your business.” Aiden blurts bluntly. Her gaze moves to the door way when the waiter enters to with their order.
The plates of colourful delicious appetite are arranged on the table. Aiden takes the knife and the fork, she cuts the tender meat and looks straight at Riley, her gaze moves down to his plate. “You sure that’s enough?” she raises her brows. Her lips move downwards to an uneven shape.
Riley stuffs his mouth with the green vegetables and nods.
“Yes, I’m on diet” he replies,. His eyes examines the other dishes on the table: a bowl of soup, a large portion of steak and a pudding. “Shouldn’t you eat less as well,” he asks.
“Why should I? I’m not a celebrity like you. Someone who should look pleasing to other’s eyes,”
“So, you agree that I look pleasing,” Riley sneers. He runs his hand through his hair and lifts his chin high.
“I never told that,” she utters as she takes a sip of the canned cola “An immature brat like you is attractive for kids.”
“You know, you sound like an old lady,” he takes a bite of the tomato “You are completely not my type.” he tilts his head. “What is your ideal type?”
“None……,”
“Yeah, none of my business,” he interrupts “I love girls who are cute and weak so I can protect them,” he rests his arms on the table and leans forward “Now tell me yours,” he requests.
Aiden licks her lips and moves forward as well “Anyone unlike you,” she answers bluntly and continues her appetite.Download Novelah App
