Chapter 9: Shadows of the Past

The atmosphere on the 13th floor was starkly different from the previous ones. A heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by the occasional whisper of the wind. The floor’s design was grim and imposing, with dark, oppressive architecture and eerie shadows that seemed to stretch and twist on their own.
Jinyuk, Lyra, and Yongyog entered cautiously, their senses on high alert. The floor’s oppressive mood seemed to seep into their bones, casting a shadow over their spirits.
“I don’t like this place,” Jinyuk muttered, his eyes darting around. “It feels... wrong.”
Lyra nodded, her face tense. “Agreed. The atmosphere is unsettling. We need to stay focused.”
Yongyog fluttered close to Jinyuk, his small form a comforting presence against the darkness. “Yongyog stay close!”
As they moved deeper into the floor, the shadows seemed to grow thicker, almost tangible. Jinyuk’s breaths grew shallow, and his steps faltered. He clutched his chest, his face contorting with discomfort.
“Jinyuk?” Lyra’s voice was laced with concern as she noticed his distress. “Are you okay?”
Jinyuk shook his head, trying to steady himself. “I don’t know... I just...”
The shadows around them seemed to shift, coalescing into images that triggered a buried pain within Jinyuk. He staggered, his eyes wide with fear as he saw distorted, haunting reflections of his past.
“No... no, this can’t be real,” Jinyuk mumbled, his voice trembling. “It’s not real.”
Lyra stepped closer, her eyes filled with worry. “Jinyuk, what’s happening? Are you seeing something?”
Jinyuk’s hands shook as he tried to push away the memories. “It’s... it’s the shadows. They’re bringing back memories... from when I was a child.”
Lyra reached out and gently placed a hand on Jinyuk’s shoulder. “You’re not alone, Jinyuk. We’re here with you.”
Yongyog hovered nearby, his small form glowing with a soothing light. “Yongyog help!”
The shadows seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy, but Lyra’s calming presence and Yongyog’s gentle glow provided a small beacon of hope. Lyra moved closer to Jinyuk, her voice soft and reassuring.
“Just breathe, Jinyuk. Focus on my voice. You’re safe here, with us.”
Jinyuk took a shuddering breath, his eyes locked onto Lyra’s. “I... I can’t shake it. The memories, they’re too strong.”
Lyra held Jinyuk’s gaze, her eyes filled with empathy and understanding. “Tell me what you’re seeing. Talking about it might help.”
Jinyuk swallowed hard, trying to articulate the images that haunted him. “It’s... my childhood. The times I was alone, sick... my parents...”
Lyra listened intently, her heart aching for him. “It’s okay. You’re not that child anymore. You’ve grown so much since then.”
Yongyog let out a comforting hum, his small body radiating warmth. The glow seemed to chase away some of the darkness, providing a sense of comfort.
Jinyuk took another deep breath, the weight of his memories slowly beginning to lift. “Thank you. I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to fall apart.”
Lyra shook her head, her expression kind and reassuring. “There’s nothing to apologize for. We all have our fears and struggles. You’re strong for facing them.”
The oppressive shadows seemed to recede, their grip on Jinyuk loosening as he accepted the comfort from his friends. The sense of dread began to fade, replaced by a growing sense of support and solidarity.
Yongyog fluttered closer, nuzzling against Jinyuk’s leg with a soft, encouraging chirp. “Yongyog here. Jinyuk strong.”
Jinyuk looked down at Yongyog, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Thank you, Yongyog. I... I really needed that.”
Lyra squeezed Jinyuk’s shoulder gently. “We’re in this together. We’ll face whatever comes our way, and we’ll do it as a team.”
Jinyuk nodded, his resolve strengthening. “You’re right. I can’t let this hold me back. We have a mission to complete.”
Lyra smiled warmly. “That’s the spirit. Let’s keep moving forward.”
As they continued their journey through the 13th floor, the shadows seemed to lose their menacing edge, their power diminished by the strength of their bond. Jinyuk, though still wary, felt a renewed sense of determination, bolstered by the support of Lyra and Yongyog.
They navigated the floor’s challenges with a renewed sense of purpose, their hearts united in their shared goal. The journey ahead remained uncertain, but with their unwavering support for each other, they were ready to face whatever trials lay ahead.
As they approached the floor’s exit, the oppressive atmosphere gave way to a lighter, more hopeful energy. Jinyuk glanced at Lyra and Yongyog, his expression one of gratitude and resolve.
“Thank you both. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Lyra smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. “We’re always here for you, Jinyuk. We’ll face whatever comes next together.”
Yongyog chirped happily, his small wings fluttering in agreement. “Yongyog always help!”
With a final nod of determination, Jinyuk, Lyra, and Yongyog continued their ascent, their spirits lifted by the strength of their bond and their shared commitment to overcoming the challenges that awaited them.
