As I walked alongside my son Mike, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I had decided to skip the construction site for the day and spend some quality time together, but I knew that this day wouldn't be filled with laughter and fun. It was going to be an emotional day, one that would bring up painful memories and difficult conversations. We walked in silence for a while, the only sound being the echo of our footsteps off the pavement. Mike seemed lost in thought, and I couldn't blame him. He had just learned that his father, the man he had never known, was a convicted felon. I could sense the weight of that knowledge bearing down on him. As we walked, I knew that I had to tell him the truth. I had to tell him about my past, about the mistakes I had made, and about the sacrifices I had to endure. I took a deep breath and began to speak. "Mike, I want to tell you something," I said, my voice low and serious. "Something that I should have told you a long time ago." Mike looked up at me, his eyes curious. "What is it, Dad?" he asked. I hesitated, unsure of how to begin. But I knew that I had to be honest, no matter how difficult it was. "I was jailed right before you were conceived," I said, the words spilling out of my mouth like a confession. "I never knew that your mom, Sophie, was pregnant. I was young and stupid, and I made a mistake. Liam, your...well, Liam was involved too. He was just a kid, but he was involved in some bad stuff. And I took the fall for him." Mike's eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice trembling. I took a deep breath and continued. "I was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Can you believe it? Twenty years of my life, gone. And I just got out two months ago. I'm still on parole, Mike. I have to report to Detective James every week." Mike looked like he had been punched in the gut. He was trying to process everything I was telling him, but it was clear that he was struggling. "Why did you take the fall for Liam?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. I sighed, feeling a wave of regret wash over me. "I was young and stupid, Mike. I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought I was protecting Liam. But I realize now that I was just making excuses. I was just trying to avoid taking responsibility for my own actions." Mike shook his head, his eyes welling up with tears. "I don't understand," he said, his voice cracking. "Why did you have to go to prison? Why did you have to leave me and Mom?" I felt a lump form in my throat as I looked at my son. I knew that I had hurt him, that I had caused him pain. But I also knew that I had to be honest, no matter how difficult it was. "I'm sorry, Mike," I said, my voice shaking. "I'm so sorry. I wish I could go back in time and change everything. But I can't. All I can do is try to make it right now." Mike looked up at me, his eyes searching. "How can you make it right?" he asked. I took a deep breath and smiled, feeling a sense of determination. "I can start by being here for you, Mike. I can start by being a good father to you. And I promise you, I will do everything in my power to make it right." Mike nodded slowly, his eyes still welling up with tears. But I could sense a glimmer of hope in his eyes, a sense that maybe, just maybe, things could get better. As we continued to walk, the silence between us was no longer awkward. It was a silence filled with emotion, with a sense of connection. We were beginning to heal, to mend the wounds of the past. And I knew that it would take time, but I was willing to do whatever it took to make things right with my son. We walked for a while longer, the only sound being the rustling of leaves and the distant hum of traffic. I could sense that Mike was still trying to process everything I had told him, but I knew that he needed time. I needed time too. Eventually, we came to a small park and sat down on a bench. Mike looked up at me, his eyes still red from crying. "Dad?" he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah?" I replied. "Why did you tell me all of this?" he asked. I smiled, feeling a sense of relief. "I told you because I want you to know the truth, Mike. I want you to know that I'm not a perfect person, but I'm trying to be a better one. As I walked away from Mike, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. It had been an emotional day, but I knew that it was a necessary step towards healing and moving forward. I checked my phone and saw that I had a message from Detective James, asking about my whereabouts. I decided to call him, and we arranged to meet at a restaurant for dinner. As I arrived at the restaurant, I saw Detective James already seated at a table. He looked up and nodded at me, and I took a seat across from him. The restaurant was quiet, with only a few patrons scattered about. The aroma of freshly cooked food wafted through the air, making my stomach growl with hunger. "Thanks for meeting me here," Detective James said, his voice firm but friendly. "No problem," I replied. "What's going on?" Detective James leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers together. "I went to the construction site today where you work, but you weren't there. I was starting to get worried." I chuckled and shook my head. "I'm sorry about that. I took the day off to spend some time with my son." Detective James's eyes narrowed. "Your son? I wasn't aware you had a son." I took a deep breath and began to explain. "I didn't know either, until recently. His name is Mike, and he's 20 years old. I just found out about him a few days ago." Detective James's expression changed from curiosity to surprise. "I see," he said. "And how did you find out about him?" I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about Detective James's demeanor put me at ease. "It's a long story," I said. "But basically, my brother Liam introduced us. He's been taking care of Mike all these years, and I had no idea." Detective James's eyes widened in surprise. "Liam? As in, the Liam who's been causing trouble in this city?" I nodded, feeling a sense of unease. "The same one. He's my brother, and I'm ashamed to say that I've been involved with him in the past. But I'm trying to turn my life around now." Detective James leaned forward, his eyes intense. "I see," he said. "Well, I think we need to talk more about this. But first, let's order some dinner." We spent the next hour eating and talking, discussing everything from my past to my present. Detective James was a good listener, and I found myself opening up to him in ways I never thought possible. He asked me questions about my time in prison, about my relationship with Liam, and about my plans for the future. As we finished our meal and prepared to part ways, Detective James looked at me with a serious expression. "I want you to know that I'm here to help you," he said. "But I also need your help. I need you to stay away from Liam and his associates. They're trouble, and I don't want you to get caught up in their mess." I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. "I will," I said. "I promise. I want to start a new life, one that's free from all the drama and stress of the past." Detective James smiled, a small, encouraging smile. "I think you can do it," he said. "Just remember, I'm here to help you. And if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to reach out." I thanked him and we parted ways, feeling a sense of hope and renewal that I hadn't felt in years. Maybe, just maybe, I could start a new chapter in my life, one that was free from the mistakes of the past. As I walked out of the restaurant, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude towards Detective James. He had listened to me, and he had offered me a chance to start anew. I knew that I still had a long way to go, but for the first time in a long time, I felt like I had a chance to make things right. I took a deep breath and began to walk, feeling the cool evening air fill my lungs. I knew that I had a lot of work ahead of me, but I was ready. I was ready to face whatever challenges came my way, and I was ready to start a new chapter in my life.
