Chapter 7: The Academy's Trials

The sun hung high in the sky as Lucas and Aveline made their way toward the prestigious academy, its grand spires piercing the clouds. Excitement buzzed in the air as students from all over the country gathered for the annual enrollment. Lucas could hardly believe they were finally here, ready to take their first step into a world of magic and combat that they had only dreamed of.
“This is it,” Aveline said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “The Golden Crest Academy! Can you believe we’re actually going to enroll?”
Lucas nodded, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. “It feels surreal. Just a few weeks ago, we were struggling to survive in the underworld.”
“Now we’re ready to face whatever challenges come our way,” Aveline said, determination etched on her face. “Let’s show them what we can do.”
As they approached the academy’s entrance, they were greeted by a massive stone archway adorned with intricate carvings of legendary figures. A sign above read, *“Welcome to the Golden Crest Academy: Where Legends are Born.”*
A line of students snaked through the courtyard, each person filled with anticipation. Lucas and Aveline joined the queue, their hearts racing as they waited for their turn.
“Do you think we’re ready for this?” Lucas asked, glancing at Aveline.
“Of course we are! We’ve trained hard, leveled up, and faced monsters. This will be a piece of cake,” she replied, her confidence infectious.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally reached the front. A stern-looking instructor stood behind a wooden desk, his gaze assessing. “Name and profession.”
“Lucas Grey, Necromancer,” Lucas replied, a hint of pride in his voice.
“Aveline Hart, Mage,” Aveline added, her eyes shining.
“Excellent. You’ll both need to pass the five challenges to enroll. First up is a duel with one of our instructors. Step forward, Lucas.”
Lucas’s stomach twisted with nerves as he stepped into the dueling ring, a circular area marked by a line of glowing runes. The instructor, a tall man with a commanding presence and a sword strapped to his side, regarded him with an amused smile.
“Are you ready, young necromancer?” the instructor asked, his tone both playful and serious.
“I’m ready,” Lucas replied, determination flooding through him.
“Good. Let’s see what you’ve got.”
With that, the instructor lunged forward, his sword flashing in the sunlight. Lucas felt a surge of adrenaline as he instinctively summoned a skeleton warrior from the ground beside him. The skeletal figure emerged, its empty eyes glowing with an eerie light.
“Let’s show him what we can do!” Lucas shouted, pointing at the instructor.
The skeleton charged forward, its bony hands reaching for the instructor, who deftly dodged and countered with a swing of his sword. But Lucas was already one step ahead. He summoned two more skeletons, and they joined the fray.
“Three against one?” the instructor chuckled, weaving through the attacking skeletons with surprising agility. “How clever!”
Lucas grinned, channeling his mana into his skeletons. “Just wait until I show you my true power!”
With a flick of his wrist, Lucas commanded his skeletons to execute a coordinated attack. They surrounded the instructor, their bony fingers grasping at him from all sides.
The instructor smirked, swinging his sword in a wide arc to cut through one of the skeletons. “Impressive, but not enough!”
But Lucas had anticipated this. As the first skeleton fell, he summoned another from the ground behind the instructor. “Now!” he shouted, and the new skeleton lunged forward, catching the instructor off guard.
With the instructor momentarily distracted, Lucas seized the opportunity. He poured his mana into his remaining skeletons, enhancing their speed and strength. The remaining skeletons struck in unison, overwhelming the instructor.
“Okay, okay! You’ve proven your point!” the instructor laughed, raising his hands in surrender as he found himself backed into a corner.
The crowd erupted into cheers, students whispering excitedly amongst themselves. “Did he just defeat an instructor?” one student exclaimed, disbelief written all over his face.
“Who is this guy?” another asked, admiration in their voice.
Lucas, panting but exhilarated, turned to Aveline, who was grinning from ear to ear. “You did it! I can’t believe you just beat an instructor!”
“I didn’t beat him; I surprised him,” Lucas said modestly, but inside he was beaming with pride.
The instructor straightened, a look of respect in his eyes. “Very impressive, Lucas. You’ve got a natural talent for strategy and combat. Welcome to the academy. Now, Aveline, you’re up.”
Aveline stepped into the ring, her expression calm and collected. “What will be our duel rules?”
“Just a friendly spar, but don’t hold back. I’ll be using my staff,” the instructor replied, his tone serious.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Aveline said, confidence radiating from her.
As the duel began, Lucas watched with rapt attention. Aveline gracefully wielded her magic, conjuring elemental spells that danced around her. She summoned fire and ice, expertly controlling them as she engaged with the instructor.
The instructor moved with precision, countering her spells with swift movements of his staff, but Aveline was relentless. She launched a fireball toward him, only for him to deflect it with a powerful gust of wind.
“Nice try!” he called, grinning.
“Just getting started!” Aveline shouted, her eyes sparkling with determination. She summoned a swirling mass of energy, and Lucas could see her drawing from her mana reserves.
“Be careful!” he called out, instinctively worried for her.
Aveline released the energy in a magnificent burst of light. The instructor was momentarily blinded, and she seized the opportunity to close the distance between them.
With a quick movement, she channeled her energy into a stunning spell, causing a surge of magic to explode around them. The shockwave knocked the instructor off balance, and the students gasped in awe.
“Impressive,” the instructor admitted, recovering quickly. “But let’s see how you handle this!”
He retaliated with a powerful strike, summoning a wave of energy that crashed toward Aveline. But she was ready. With a flick of her wrist, she created a barrier of ice that absorbed the blow, and then countered with a barrage of icicles aimed directly at him.
“Wow!” Lucas exclaimed, his heart racing. “She’s amazing!”
The students around him cheered as Aveline continued to fight valiantly, showcasing her skills and creativity in combat. Finally, after a series of back-and-forth exchanges, the instructor acknowledged her talent.
“Very well done, Aveline! You’ve both proven yourselves today,” he said, a genuine smile on his face. “Welcome to the Golden Crest Academy.”
As they exited the dueling area, students surrounded them, eager to hear more about their accomplishments.
“I can’t believe you took down an instructor!” one student gushed, eyes wide with admiration.
“And Aveline, your magic was incredible!” another added, beaming with excitement.
Lucas smiled, feeling a sense of camaraderie building among them. “Thanks! We’ve both been working hard to get here.”
“Let’s celebrate! There’s a great tavern nearby,” one of the students suggested.
“Sounds good to me!” Aveline agreed, her eyes sparkling. “I’m starving after all that fighting!”
As they walked toward the tavern, Lucas felt a newfound sense of belonging. The challenges they had faced in the underworld had forged them into stronger individuals, and now they were ready to take on whatever the academy threw their way.
As they entered the lively tavern, the scent of roasted meat and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, making their mouths water. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with laughter and chatter.
“Let’s grab a table!” Aveline called, weaving through the crowd. They found a large table in the corner and settled down, eager to enjoy their hard-earned victory.
“What should we order?” Lucas asked, scanning the menu.
“Everything! We deserve a feast,” Aveline said with a grin. “I want to try that roasted boar!”
“Sounds good to me,” Lucas replied, already imagining the delicious meal.
As they placed their orders, other students joined them, eager to share in their excitement. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, and Lucas felt like he was finally where he belonged.
“So, what’s your next challenge?” one of the students asked.
“We have to complete all five challenges to fully enroll,” Lucas explained. “We’ve finished the duel, so now it’s on to the next one.”
“What are the other challenges?” another student chimed in.
“There’s a test of magic proficiency, a trial of endurance, a strategy game against the academy’s elite, and finally, a test of teamwork,” Aveline replied, her enthusiasm infectious.
“Sounds intense! I can’t wait to see you tackle the magic proficiency test,” one student said, raising their drink in a toast. “To Lucas and Aveline, the future legends of the academy!”
They all cheered, raising their mugs and drinks in celebration. Lucas felt a sense of unity among them, a shared purpose that ignited a fire within him.
As the evening wore on, laughter and stories filled the tavern. Lucas shared tales of their adventures in the underworld, captivating his audience with tales of narrow escapes and close calls.
“Wow! You really fought off a whole group of assassins?” one
student exclaimed, eyes wide in disbelief.
“And you did it with just your skeletons!” another chimed in, shaking their head in admiration.
“Yeah, but they were just as surprised as I was,” Lucas chuckled. “I never expected to be a necromancer, let alone one who could take on so many at once!”
As the night continued, Aveline leaned closer to Lucas, her voice low. “You know, I think we can make a real name for ourselves here. We just have to keep pushing ourselves.”
“Agreed,” Lucas replied, his heart racing at the thought. “We can’t get complacent. We need to train even harder to master our skills.”
With a determined spark in their eyes, they both knew they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. As the tavern buzzed with excitement, Lucas and Aveline exchanged glances, silently agreeing that this was just the beginning of their journey together—a journey that would shape them into legends in their own right.
