Chapter 8: Trials of the Golden Crest Academy

The next morning dawned bright and clear, casting a golden light over the sprawling campus of the Golden Crest Academy. Lucas and Aveline awoke early, anticipation thrumming in their veins as they prepared for the day’s challenges. They had both proven their strength in the duel against the instructor, but now they faced the real tests that would determine their future at the academy.
“Ready for the next trial?” Aveline asked, pulling her long hair into a neat braid.
“More than ready,” Lucas replied, adjusting his necromancer robes. “What’s first on the list?”
“The test of magic proficiency,” Aveline said, her voice steady despite the hint of nerves. “I heard it’s designed to push us to our limits.”
Lucas nodded, remembering the last trial he faced. “Let’s show them what we can do.”
As they made their way to the designated arena for the trial, the sounds of excited chatter filled the air. Students exchanged stories about their previous duels and shared strategies for the upcoming tests.
“Did you hear about the student who conjured a storm in the magic proficiency test?” one girl exclaimed to her friend.
“No way! I heard he took out three opponents at once,” the friend replied, eyes wide with awe.
Lucas felt a mix of excitement and anxiety as they approached the arena, a vast circular space surrounded by stone walls. A platform stood at the center, with a panel of instructors watching from elevated seats.
“Welcome, students, to the magic proficiency test!” a deep voice boomed from the platform. It was Headmaster Eldrin, a tall man with a long white beard and piercing blue eyes. “Today, you will demonstrate your abilities in various forms of magic. Each of you will face three challenges. You must pass at least two to proceed to the next trial. Aveline and Lucas, step forward.”
The crowd quieted as they moved to the center of the arena, feeling the weight of everyone’s gaze upon them.
“First challenge: elemental manipulation,” Headmaster Eldrin announced. “You will each summon and control an element of your choice. Show us what you’ve got.”
Aveline stepped forward, confidence radiating from her. “I’ll go first.”
She raised her hands, closing her eyes as she summoned her magic. A gust of wind swirled around her, carrying leaves and dust into the air. As she focused, the wind coalesced into a spiral, lifting higher and higher.
“Impressive!” the headmaster called out, watching intently.
Lucas grinned as he watched Aveline. “She’s incredible!”
With a flick of her wrist, Aveline directed the wind to dance in intricate patterns around her, forming a small whirlwind. She opened her eyes, determination burning brightly.
“Now, for the final flourish!” she said, channeling her energy. The wind shifted into a dazzling array of colors, creating a stunning display that captivated the audience.
“Beautiful! Well done!” the headmaster praised. “Now, Lucas, it’s your turn.”
Lucas stepped forward, heart pounding with excitement. He took a deep breath and summoned his energy, channeling it into the ground. “I’ll summon the power of shadows.”
The arena darkened momentarily as shadows flickered around him, coiling and twisting like living beings. With a swift motion, Lucas commanded the shadows to rise, forming dark tendrils that danced in the air.
“Now, let’s see how strong you are!” he exclaimed, channeling more energy into his shadows. They thickened, stretching outward and enveloping the nearby arena stones in a cloak of darkness.
“Impressive use of necromancy!” Headmaster Eldrin noted, a hint of approval in his voice. “But let’s see you control them.”
Lucas focused, trying to maintain control. He twisted his hands, and the shadows obeyed, swirling and coiling around him in intricate patterns. The audience gasped, fascinated by the display.
“Now, let’s see how well you can use them offensively,” the headmaster said, raising an eyebrow.
With a nod, Lucas sent the shadows forward, creating a wave of darkness that crashed against an invisible barrier erected by the headmaster. The impact caused a ripple effect, demonstrating the raw power of his necromancy.
“Well done, Lucas!” the headmaster declared, a rare smile appearing on his face. “You’ve both passed the first challenge!”
Cheers erupted from the audience, and Lucas exchanged a triumphant glance with Aveline.
“Two down, three to go!” she exclaimed, excitement bubbling over.
As they stepped back, the headmaster continued, “Next, we have the trial of endurance. You will face a series of physical challenges designed to test your stamina and strength. Are you both ready?”
“Ready!” they both replied in unison, determination etched on their faces.
The arena transformed into an obstacle course, with various challenges set up. A series of walls, climbing ropes, and a pit filled with mud awaited them.
“Your goal is to complete the course in the fastest time possible,” the headmaster explained. “The instructors will monitor your performance.”
“Let’s give it our all!” Aveline said, taking a deep breath.
“On your marks, get set, go!” the headmaster shouted.
They took off, sprinting toward the first obstacle. A wooden wall loomed ahead, and Lucas quickly scaled it with practiced ease, using his enhanced agility from leveling up.
“Come on, Aveline!” he called, glancing back to see her not far behind.
“I’m right here!” she shouted, climbing the wall with determination.
They leaped down and continued, racing through the mud pit. Lucas felt the cold, sludgy water clinging to his legs as he pushed through, trying to maintain speed.
As they neared the final stretch, they spotted instructors at the finish line, cheering them on. Aveline stumbled slightly but quickly regained her balance.
“Almost there!” Lucas encouraged her.
With one last burst of energy, they crossed the finish line together, panting heavily.
“Fantastic! You both finished under the time limit!” one instructor called out, a look of approval on their face.
“Great job, Lucas!” Aveline exclaimed, her face flushed with excitement. “We did it!”
“Now onto the next trial,” Lucas replied, feeling the adrenaline coursing through him.
“Third trial: the strategy game,” Headmaster Eldrin announced. “You will face off against a group of academy elite in a tactical battle. Use your wits and skills to outmaneuver them.”
A table was set up in the arena, with a large map laid out before them. A group of experienced students—known as the Tacticians—stood opposite, smirking with confidence.
“Good luck!” one of them taunted, crossing his arms. “You’ll need it.”
“Let’s show them what we’ve got,” Aveline whispered, determination shining in her eyes.
The headmaster explained the rules. “You will each take turns placing your units on the map and strategizing your moves. The goal is to capture the opposing team’s base. Ready?”
“Ready!” Lucas said, his mind racing with possibilities.
“Let’s go first!” Aveline said, eager to take the lead. She placed her units carefully, considering their strengths and weaknesses.
“Nice placement,” Lucas commented, nodding approvingly.
The Tacticians took their turn, deploying their units strategically. Lucas felt the tension in the air as they exchanged turns, each side attempting to outsmart the other.
“Now, we’ll execute our plan,” Lucas said, eyes gleaming with excitement. “If we move here and flank them from both sides, we can corner their forces.”
“Let’s do it!” Aveline agreed, following his lead.
As the game progressed, Lucas and Aveline worked seamlessly together, coordinating their moves and anticipating their opponents’ strategies. They executed a flawless flanking maneuver, catching the Tacticians off guard.
“No! That can’t be!” one of the Tacticians exclaimed, shock evident on his face.
With each turn, Lucas felt more confident in their strategy. The crowd watched in awe as the two newcomers began to dominate the board, taking control of the battlefield.
“Finish them off!” Aveline shouted, her voice filled with excitement.
They captured the Tacticians’ base, and the crowd erupted into cheers.
“Well done, Lucas and Aveline! You’ve outsmarted the Tacticians,” the headmaster praised, a rare glimmer of pride in his eyes.
“This is amazing!” Lucas exclaimed, his heart racing with exhilaration. “I can’t believe we just did that!”
“Just one more trial to go,” Aveline said, her voice steady as she caught her breath.
“Final challenge: the test of teamwork,” the headmaster declared, a serious tone replacing the excitement in his voice. “You will need to work together to solve a series of puzzles that will test your bond and communication skills. Failure will result in disqualification from enrollment.”
Lucas and Aveline exchanged serious glances, understanding the weight of the final challenge.
“We can do this,” Aveline said, determination glimmering in her eyes. “We just need to stay focused.”
The arena transformed again, this time into a dimly lit chamber filled with intricate puzzles and magical runes. Lucas felt a shiver of anticipation.
“Your first task is to unlock the door,” the headmaster instructed. “But it requires two people to work together to decipher the runes.”
Lucas stepped forward, examining the ancient symbols etched into the door. “I see three sets of runes. We’ll have to read them simultaneously to unlock it.”
“Let’s do it!” Aveline replied,
 moving beside him.
Together, they began deciphering the runes, speaking the incantations in unison. The door glowed with a warm light, and after a tense moment, it clicked open.
“Excellent!” the headmaster exclaimed. “Now, onto the second puzzle.”
They entered a new chamber, where a large pedestal stood with a glowing orb on top. A series of questions floated above it, asking about teamwork, trust, and sacrifice.
“This is a test of our bond,” Aveline said, glancing at Lucas. “We need to answer these questions together.”
As they discussed their answers, they shared personal stories about their experiences, building trust and understanding.
“If we want to succeed, we need to be honest with each other,” Lucas said earnestly.
Aveline nodded. “Absolutely. I trust you, Lucas. Let’s answer as a team.”
They carefully considered each question and provided their answers, working through the challenges as a unit. With each correct response, the orb pulsed with energy, illuminating the room.
Finally, they completed the last question, and the orb released a burst of light, revealing a hidden door.
“Just one more challenge,” Lucas said, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety.
The headmaster led them into the final chamber, which contained a massive stone wall covered in a complex maze.
“Your final task is to navigate through the maze. You’ll need to communicate and work together to find the exit,” he explained.
Lucas took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the challenge ahead. “Let’s stick together and keep talking. We can do this!”
They entered the maze, the walls towering above them. As they navigated through the twists and turns, they faced obstacles that required quick thinking and teamwork to overcome.
“There’s a wall here! We need to go left!” Aveline called out, pointing to a narrow opening.
“Got it! Let’s move!” Lucas replied, following her lead.
As they progressed, they encountered traps and illusions designed to confuse them. But with each challenge, their bond grew stronger, their communication seamless.
“Over here! I see a glimmer of light!” Aveline exclaimed, her eyes lighting up.
“Let’s head toward it!” Lucas agreed, his heart racing as they dashed toward the light.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally emerged from the maze, breathless but victorious.
“You did it! You both passed the final challenge!” Headmaster Eldrin announced, pride evident in his voice. “Welcome to the Golden Crest Academy!”
Cheers erupted from the audience as Lucas and Aveline shared a joyful embrace.
“We did it!” Aveline cried, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“I can’t believe it!” Lucas exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear. “This is just the beginning!”
As they stood together, surrounded by cheering students and faculty, Lucas felt a sense of belonging wash over him. He had come a long way from the unknown commoner with a hidden profession. Now, he was ready to forge his path alongside Aveline, facing whatever challenges lay ahead at the prestigious academy.
