Chapter 16: The Division of Trust

The air in the arena felt thick with tension as the players gathered in their newly formed alliances. Seyun stood at the edge of the group, watching as different factions began to form, each one vying for control, strategy, and survival.
Kaito nudged him. "Looks like not everyone's on board with the teamwork idea," he muttered, pointing to a small group of players standing apart, whispering amongst themselves.
"Yeah," Seyun said, his eyes narrowing. "Some people are still too focused on themselves. But they’ll learn soon enough that going solo won’t get them anywhere in this game."
The red-haired girl who had rallied the group earlier, who introduced herself as Hana, walked up to Seyun and Kaito, a look of concern on her face. "It’s hard getting everyone to trust each other. Some of them think alliances will only slow them down."
Seyun glanced over at the group of loners, then back to Hana. "They’ll come around when they see how much harder it is without support. We just need to make sure those of us who are sticking together stay strong."
Hana nodded, folding her arms. "I hope so. But the next trial is coming soon, and I have a feeling it’s going to test us even more than the last one."
As if on cue, the booming voice of the Administrator echoed across the arena once more. "Players, prepare for the next trial! The Trial of Bonds begins now!"
The ground beneath them trembled, and a large golden door materialized in the center of the arena. Intricate carvings swirled across its surface, and the word "UNITY" was engraved at the top in bold letters.
"Great," Kaito muttered. "That doesn’t sound ominous at all."
The golden door swung open, revealing a vast labyrinth stretching out into the horizon, walls towering high above. The Administrator's voice continued, "In this trial, you will be divided into teams based on the bonds you’ve formed. To survive, you must work together to reach the exit of the labyrinth. However, beware—only one team can reach the end. The others will face...elimination."
A wave of dread washed over the players. Murmurs and whispers of panic began to spread through the group.
"Only one team?" Hana whispered, her eyes wide. "That means we’ll have to compete against each other."
Seyun’s jaw tightened. "It was bound to happen eventually," he said quietly. "This game was never going to let us all win. But we can still do this—if we stay focused."
Kaito looked around at the other groups forming, his brow furrowed. "What’s the plan, Seyun? Do we stick with Hana’s group, or go off on our own?"
Seyun glanced at Hana, who had proven herself as a capable leader. But there was something nagging at the back of his mind—something that told him the trials ahead would test not just their physical strength, but their trust in each other.
"We stick together for now," Seyun decided, looking between Kaito and Hana. "But we stay cautious. This trial is about bonds, and the game will try to break us apart. We can’t let that happen."
Hana overheard and nodded in agreement. "You’re right. We’ve already seen what happens when players turn on each other. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen here."
The players began to split into teams, each one stepping forward toward the entrance of the labyrinth. Seyun, Kaito, and Hana’s group moved together, their eyes fixed on the twisting corridors ahead.
As they crossed the threshold into the labyrinth, the golden door slammed shut behind them, and a cold, eerie silence settled over the maze. The towering walls seemed to close in on them, casting long shadows across the narrow paths.
"We need to move quickly," Hana said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The longer we stay here, the more vulnerable we become."
Seyun nodded. "We need to keep an eye out for traps, too. This place is designed to break us."
As they navigated the winding pathways, the sound of distant footsteps echoed through the maze. Every step felt heavier, every shadow more menacing. The air was thick with tension, and Seyun could sense the pressure building within the group.
Suddenly, a low growl reverberated through the walls, freezing them in place.
"What was that?" Kaito whispered, his eyes wide with fear.
Seyun's heart raced. "I don’t know, but we need to keep moving."
They hurried down the next corridor, the growl growing louder. As they turned the corner, they came face-to-face with a massive stone creature, its eyes glowing a deep crimson.
"Run!" Hana shouted, pulling the group back.
The creature lunged forward, swiping its massive arm toward them. They barely managed to dodge its attack, sprinting down the narrow passageway as fast as they could.
"We can’t keep running forever!" Kaito shouted, his voice strained with panic. "What do we do?"
"We need a plan!" Hana added, her breath coming in short bursts. "We can’t outrun it for long!"
Seyun’s mind raced, analyzing the situation. The labyrinth was designed to test their bonds, and this creature was a part of that test. It wasn’t just about running—it was about trust.
"We have to fight it together," Seyun said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "But we need to work as a team. We can’t let fear break us apart."
Kaito glanced at Seyun, doubt flickering in his eyes. "Are you sure? That thing’s huge!"
"It’s the only way," Seyun insisted. "We take it down together, or we don’t make it out at all."
Hana clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. "Seyun’s right. We’re stronger as a team. Let’s do this."
They stopped running, turning to face the stone creature as it charged toward them, its massive form shaking the ground beneath their feet.
"On my mark!" Seyun shouted. "Kaito, take the left! Hana, cover the right! We’ll hit it from all sides!"
The creature roared, its crimson eyes locking onto them. As it raised its arm to strike, Seyun gave the signal.
"Now!"
Kaito darted to the left, dodging the creature’s arm as it slammed into the ground. Hana moved swiftly to the right, using her speed to outmaneuver its second attack.
Seyun charged straight ahead, his heart pounding in his chest. He focused on the creature’s glowing eyes, the source of its power.
With perfect synchronization, they attacked from all angles. Kaito and Hana’s strikes weakened its defenses, giving Seyun the opening he needed. He leaped into the air, aiming for the creature’s eyes.
With a powerful strike, Seyun’s blade connected with the creature’s glowing eye, shattering it into a thousand pieces. The creature let out a deafening roar, its body crumbling into dust.
As the dust settled, the labyrinth fell silent once more.
Seyun landed on his feet, breathing heavily. Kaito and Hana approached him, their faces filled with relief.
"We did it," Kaito panted, a grin spreading across his face. "We actually did it."
Hana smiled, wiping the sweat from her brow. "That was... intense. But we worked together, and we made it through."
Seyun nodded, though a sense of unease still lingered. "This was just the beginning. The labyrinth was meant to test our bonds, and we passed. But the game isn’t over yet."
As they continued through the labyrinth, Seyun couldn’t shake the feeling that something darker awaited them ahead. The Trial of Bonds had only just begun, and the real challenge was yet to come.
