Chapter 18: Artifact
The sun had barely begun to set, casting long shadows across the dense forest as Caden pushed through the thick underbrush. The trees loomed taller here, their branches intertwining to block out the remaining daylight, making the path ahead even darker. Lira and Finn trailed behind, their footsteps crunching softly on the uneven ground.
“Are you sure this is the right way?” Finn asked, his voice a little too high-pitched to hide the nervousness creeping in.
Caden paused for a moment, glancing back at him. “The map pointed here. This is the place.”
Lira stepped closer, her eyes scanning the darkening horizon. “If the rumors are true, there’s a dungeon nearby. But no one’s ever returned to confirm it.”
Finn let out a low groan. “And we’re going to be the first to confirm it, huh? Great.”
Caden couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, but his curiosity burned brighter than his caution. The map they’d found deep in the old archives had clearly shown this location, and the whispers of hidden dungeons and ancient artifacts were too enticing to resist.
“We’ve come this far,” Caden said, glancing ahead into the gloom. “We can’t turn back now.”
Lira nodded in agreement, though her hand tightened around the hilt of her dagger. “Let’s stay on guard.”
The deeper they went, the quieter the forest became. Soon, there was no sound except the soft rustle of leaves underfoot and the occasional snap of a twig. It was unsettling, but Caden pressed on, his eyes scanning the ground for any sign of an entrance.
After what felt like hours, he finally spotted it—a narrow crevice between two massive rocks, half-hidden by overgrown vines and moss. The air around it felt colder, the shadows more menacing.
“There,” Caden pointed, his voice barely above a whisper.
Lira stepped up beside him, her breath catching in her throat as she peered into the dark opening. “That looks… ominous.”
“Of course it does,” Finn muttered from behind, though his usual humor was absent. “Why would it be easy, right?”
Caden knelt down, pulling the vines aside to get a better look. The crevice was just wide enough for them to squeeze through one at a time, and it led downward into an eerie blackness.
“Are we really doing this?” Finn asked, his voice shaky.
Caden didn’t answer immediately. His heart pounded in his chest, and the familiar flicker of flames stirred within him, as if reacting to the dark presence below. He knew this could be dangerous—far more dangerous than anything they’d ever faced—but the pull of the unknown was too strong.
“We are,” Caden finally said, his voice steady. “We didn’t come all this way for nothing.”
Lira exchanged a glance with Finn, then nodded. “I’m with you, Caden.”
“Me too,” Finn grumbled, though his eyes darted nervously toward the opening.
One by one, they slipped into the crevice, their bodies barely fitting through the narrow gap. As they descended, the air grew colder, and the walls of the tunnel seemed to close in on them, thick with the scent of damp earth and something far older.
They landed in a cavernous chamber, the walls slick with moisture. Strange carvings lined the stone, worn down by time but still visible, telling stories of battles long forgotten. A faint light shimmered at the far end of the room.
“There’s something up ahead,” Lira whispered, her voice tight with tension.
Caden nodded, moving cautiously forward. His footsteps echoed in the vast space, the only sound in the eerie silence. The light grew stronger as they neared, illuminating a stone pedestal in the center of the room.
And there, resting atop it, was the artifact.
It was dark—darker than any shadow Caden had ever seen—its surface swirling with faint wisps of black mist. The artifact was small, barely the size of his hand, but its presence was overwhelming. It radiated a power that made his skin crawl and the flames inside him flicker wildly.
“What is that?” Finn whispered, his voice barely audible.
Caden approached it slowly, his eyes fixed on the artifact. “I don’t know… but it’s powerful.”
Lira grabbed his arm before he could get any closer. “Caden, wait. We don’t know what that thing is. It feels wrong.”
He hesitated, her words sinking in, but the pull of the artifact was too strong. It was as if it was calling to him, drawing him closer. “I can’t leave it here. We need to find out what it is.”
“Or maybe we should leave it alone,” Finn muttered, shifting nervously from foot to foot.
Caden shook his head. “No. There’s something about this… I have to know.”
Before Lira or Finn could stop him, he reached out and grasped the artifact.
The moment his fingers touched it, a surge of darkness shot through him. The room seemed to spin, the air growing thick and oppressive. Caden gasped, stumbling back, but his grip on the artifact tightened involuntarily. The flames inside him roared to life, battling the dark energy coursing through his veins.
“Caden!” Lira’s voice was distant, barely reaching him through the haze of power.
His vision blurred, and for a terrifying moment, he thought he would lose control. The artifact’s darkness clawed at him, trying to smother the fire inside, trying to consume him.
But Caden fought back.
With every ounce of willpower he had, he pushed against the darkness, forcing it back with the flames that burned within him. The artifact’s power was immense, but so was his.
Slowly, the darkness receded, and the oppressive weight lifted. Caden fell to his knees, panting, the artifact still clutched in his hand, but its power had dimmed.
“Are you okay?” Lira knelt beside him, her face pale with worry.
“I… I’m fine,” Caden managed to say, though his voice was weak.
Finn stood a few steps back, his eyes wide with fear. “What the hell was that?”
Caden looked down at the artifact in his hand. It was still dark and ominous, but now, it felt… subdued. As if it had acknowledged his strength.
“I don’t know,” Caden admitted, his breath still shaky. “But we need to take it back. There’s more to this thing than we realize.”
Lira frowned, clearly uneasy. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
Caden met her gaze, his eyes steady. “We need answers. And this might be the key.”
Lira hesitated but finally nodded. “Alright. But we need to be careful.”
Finn let out a long breath, shaking his head. “You guys are insane. But I guess I’m in too.”
As they made their way back out of the dungeon, the weight of the artifact still heavy in Caden’s hand, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. Whatever the artifact was, whatever power it held, it was far more dangerous than any of them could have imagined.Download Novelah App
