Chapter 25: Abolished Custom.

Two weeks had passed since we joined the New Order. Ryder had been true to his word, introducing us to his advisors and integrating us into their community. But despite the progress, tensions lingered. Emily, Stephanie, and I had grown accustomed to the New Order's routines, but our instincts remained on high alert.
"I don't trust them," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper, as we walked through the settlement's central square. "There's something off."
"I know," I replied, scanning our surroundings, my eyes lingering on the armed guards patrolling the perimeter. "But Ryder seems genuine. He's made efforts to transparency and accountability."
Stephanie nodded, her brow furrowed in concern.
"I agree," she said. "But we can't ignore the risks. Victor's loyalists are still out there, waiting for an opportunity to strike."
Just then, Marcus approached us, his expression grim.
"We've found something," he said, his voice low. "A hidden bunker, stocked with supplies. But there's more."
"What is it?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.
Marcus hesitated, glancing around cautiously.
"We've found evidence of Victor's loyalists," he said. "They're planning something. We're not sure what, but it can't be good."
Ryder's expression turned dark when we informed him.
"I knew it," he said, his jaw clenched. "We have to take action. Gather our best people and prepare for a potential attack."
"We need to gather more information," Emily said.
Ryder nodded.
"I agree," he said. "But we can't delay. We'll assemble a team to investigate."
The team consisted of Ryder, Emily, Stephanie, Marcus, and me. We set out, armed and cautious, our senses on high alert.
As we approached the bunker, we noticed strange symbols etched into the walls.
"What does this mean?" Emily asked.
Ryder's expression turned grim.
"It's Victor's mark," he said. "His loyalists are signaling their presence."
We entered the bunker, our guns drawn, the air thick with tension.
"Look," Marcus whispered.
A makeshift shrine stood in the center of the room, Victor's image emblazoned on the wall.
"This is twisted," Stephanie said.
Ryder's eyes narrowed.
"This is what we're up against," he said. "Fanatics."
Suddenly, gunfire erupted from the shadows.
"Take cover!" Ryder shouted.
We returned fire, our hearts racing, the sound of gunfire echoing through the bunker.
"We need to get out of here," Emily yelled.
As we retreated, I caught a glimpse of a figure fleeing the scene.
"Stop!" I shouted.
The figure turned, revealing a shocking face.
"Ava," I said, stunned.
Ava, once a trusted member of the New Order, stood before us, her eyes filled with hatred.
"You fools," she spat. "You think Ryder's changed? He's just using you."
Ryder's expression turned cold.
"Ava, stop this," he said.
Ava sneered.
"You're no better than Victor," she said. "You're using his tactics, his ideology."
Ryder's face twisted in anguish.
"Ava, no," he said. "We've changed. We're trying to make amends."
Ava's laughter sent chills down my spine.
"You're too late," she said. "The loyalists will rise again."
With that, she vanished into the shadows.
"We need to warn the others," Emily said.
Ryder nodded.
"We'll increase security," he said. "But we can't let our guard down."
As we returned to the New Order's settlement, I couldn't shake the feeling that Ava's words held truth.
"What if Ava's right?" Stephanie asked.
I hesitated.
"I don't know," I replied. "But we need to investigate."
Emily's eyes narrowed.
"We'll get to the bottom of this," she said.
---
Weeks turned into months, and the New Order's settlement flourished. We had grown to thousands, with new survivors joining every day. Hope began to bloom, and our community became a beacon of light in the post-apocalyptic world. Children laughed and played in the streets, while their parents worked tirelessly to rebuild.
But amidst the progress, a nagging concern lingered. Ava and her loyalists were still out there, posing a huge threat. Their presence hung over us like a dark cloud, casting a shadow on our newfound hope.
"We can't ignore this," Emily said, her voice firm, during a meeting with Ryder and his advisors. "Ava's loyalists could attack at any moment. We need to take proactive measures."
Ryder's expression turned grave, his brow furrowed in concern.
"I know," he said. "But we've increased security, patrols, and surveillance. We're doing everything we can. We've also established alliances with neighboring settlements, sharing intelligence and resources."
Stephanie frowned, her eyes narrowing.
"It's not enough," she said. "We need to anticipate Ava's next move. She's unpredictable, and her loyalists are fanatical."
Marcus nodded, his jaw clenched.
"I agree," he said. "We should gather intelligence on Ava's movements, identify her weaknesses. We can't afford to underestimate her."
Ryder nodded, his eyes scanning the room.
"I'll assign a team to gather intel," he said. "But we need to balance caution with growth. We can't let fear dictate our actions. We must continue to build, to progress."
I spoke up, my voice firm.
"We should also prepare our people for a potential attack," I said. "Train them in self-defense, evacuation procedures. We can't assume Ava won't try to infiltrate."
Ryder nodded.
"Agreed," he said. "We'll start training programs immediately. We'll also establish emergency response teams, equipped to handle any situation."
As the meeting concluded, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. Ava's presence lingered, a constant threat.
"Ava's still out there," I said to Emily, as we walked out of the meeting room.
"I know," she replied. "But we're doing everything we can. We'll find her, and we'll bring her to justice."
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside. Guards rushed to the entrance, surrounding a group of new arrivals.
"What's happening?" Emily asked.
A guard rushed up to us.
"We've got new arrivals," he said. "A large group, seeking refuge. They're fleeing from a nearby settlement that was attacked."
Ryder appeared, his expression cautious.
"Screen them thoroughly," he said. "We can't afford to let Ava's loyalists infiltrate. Check for any signs of loyalty to Victor's regime."
As we processed the new arrivals, my instincts remained on high alert. I questioned each individual, searching for any hint of deception.
"Who are these people?" I asked one of the guards.
"Mostly families," he replied. "Fleeing from a nearby settlement that was attacked. They're traumatized, but they seem genuine."
My heart sank.
"Ava?" I asked.
The guard nodded.
"We're not sure, but it's possible. We're keeping a close eye on them."
That night, as I walked the settlement's perimeter, I noticed something odd. A figure lurking in the shadows.
"Who's there?" I shouted.
The figure vanished.
"Ava?" I whispered.
I chased after the figure, but they disappeared into the night. My heart racing, I returned to the settlement, my senses on high alert.
The next morning, I reported the incident to Ryder.
"We need to increase patrols," I said.
Ryder's expression turned grim.
"I agree," he said. "But we can't let fear dictate our actions. We'll find Ava, but we won't let her disrupt our progress."
As tensions escalated, I wondered if we were prepared for the impending storm.
