Chapter 2: Prom Night 2.

As they walked away, hand in hand, I decided it was time to let them be. I couldn't bear the thought of watching them together anymore, my heart aching with every step they took. But curiosity, that relentless and insidious companion, refused to let me go. It nagged at me, urging me to follow them, to see where their night would lead, to uncover the truth about their relationship.
By the time I got outside, I didn't see them together. Instead, I saw Jake pacing back into the gymnasium, his expression tense, his brow furrowed in concern. My heart skipped a beat. Where was Emily? Had they already parted ways? Were they arguing?
Without thinking, I followed Jake, my feet moving silently across the floor. If I followed him, I'd definitely get to see Emily. They were probably just taking a break, and Jake was likely going to fetch something from inside. I trailed behind him, my eyes fixed on his broad back.
As I stalked him, my eyes scanning the crowded hallway, I felt a mix of emotions. Anger, hurt, and curiosity swirled inside me, a toxic cocktail that threatened to consume me. What were they doing? Were they arguing? Was Emily okay?
Jake turned a corner, and I quickened my pace, careful not to be seen. He stopped outside the toilet area, glanced around cautiously, and then slipped inside. My heart raced. What was he doing? Was Emily already there?
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should follow him inside. But my curiosity won out. I crept closer, my ears straining to hear any sound, my eyes scanning the area for any sign of Emily.
And then, I saw them. Jake was kissing another girl, his hands roaming over her body, his lips devouring hers. My eyes widened in shock. Who was she? How could he do this to Emily?
The girl's face was familiar, but I couldn't place her. She was definitely not from our school. Jake's actions were brazen, and I felt a surge of anger. How could he betray Emily's trust like this?
He never saw me, too caught up in his clandestine encounter. I watched, frozen in disgust, as they continued to kiss, their bodies entwined in a passionate embrace. This was the boy Emily had chosen over me. This was the boy she trusted.
A wave of nausea washed over me. I needed to get out of there, to escape the toxic scene unfolding before me. I turned to leave, but my feet felt rooted to the spot.
I swiftly pulled out my phone and snapped several photos of Jake and the mysterious girl, capturing their intimate moment. The camera's flash illuminated the dimly lit area, but they were too engrossed to notice. I had the evidence I needed, concrete proof of Jake's betrayal.
My heart racing, I turned to leave, determined to find Emily. She deserved to know the truth about Jake's infidelity. I navigated through the crowded hallways, scanning the sea of faces for Emily's familiar smile. The music and laughter seemed to fade into the background as I searched for her.
Finally, I spotted Emily near the refreshments table, sipping a glass of punch. Her silver gown shimmered under the lights, and her dark hair cascaded down her back like a waterfall.
"Emily!" I called out, my voice rising above the din.
She turned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Hey! What's up?" she asked.
Can we talk?" I asked, my tone urgent.
Emily's expression changed to concern. "What's wrong?" she asked.
"Not here," I said, glancing around at the surrounding crowd. The last thing I wanted was to humiliate Emily in public.
Emily nodded, and we stepped outside into the cool night air. The stars twinkled above us, and the sound of crickets provided a soothing background hum.
"What's going on?" Emily asked.
"Jake," I began.
Emily's eyes lit up. "What about him?" she asked.
I took a deep breath. "I just saw him with another girl," I said.
Emily's face fell. "What do you mean?" she asked.
I hesitated, choosing my words carefully. "I mean, they were kissing," I said.
Emily's eyes widened. "No, that can't be," she protested.
I pulled out my phone, displaying the incriminating photos. Emily's eyes scanned the images, her face paling.
"Oh my god..." she whispered.
"I'm so sorry, Emily," I said.
Tears welled up in Emily's eyes. "Why would he do that?" she asked.
I shook my head. "I don't know, but you deserve better," I said.
Emily nodded, her jaw set. "I need to confront him," she said.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
Emily nodded. "Yes, I need to know why he would do this to me."
We scoured the crowded hallways, searching for Jake. Emily's anger simmered just below the surface, ready to erupt at any moment. Her eyes blazed with a fierce determination, her jaw set in a resolute line. I could feel her tension, her determination to confront him and demand answers.
Just as we turned a corner, Jake appeared, his eyes scanning the area until they landed on Emily. A look of relief washed over his face, followed by a hint of caution.
"Hey, I've been looking everywhere for you," Jake said, his voice laced with concern.
Emily's eyes flashed with anger, her voice dripping with venom. "You've been looking for me?" she spat, each word laced with disgust.
Jake nodded, his expression wary. "Yeah, I was worried about you."
"Worried about me?" Emily repeated, her tone incredulous. "You were worried about me while you were kissing another girl?"
Jake's expression faltered, his eyes dropping in shame. "Emily, I—"
"Don't even try to explain," Emily cut in, her voice rising. "I know exactly what I saw. You were kissing her, Jake. How could you?"
Jake's eyes pleaded for understanding. "I'm sorry, Emily. It was a mistake. A stupid, thoughtless mistake."
"A mistake?" Emily's voice rose, echoing off the lockers. "A mistake is forgetting to call me, not cheating on me."
Jake took a step forward, his hands extended. "I know I messed up, but I love you, Emily. That kiss meant nothing."
Emily's anger seemed to dissipate, replaced by a deep sadness. "Do you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jake nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "Yes, I do. That kiss was just a momentary lapse of judgment."
Emily looked at him, her eyes searching for truth. "Nothing?" she repeated.
Jake shook his head. "No, it was just a stupid mistake. I swear, Emily, it won't happen again."
To my surprise, Emily nodded. "Okay," she said.
"Okay?" I echoed.
Emily turned to me. "It's fine. Jake apologized."
I felt a pang of disappointment. My plans had been for nothing.
Jake smiled, relief etched on his face. "Thanks, Emily."
"No problem," Emily said.
As they hugged, I felt ashamed. My interference had been unnecessary.
"Hey, thanks for trying to look out for me," Emily said.
I forced a smile. "No problem."
But inside, I seethed. My plans had been foiled.
