Chapter 18: Unraveling the Past
Aelion's POV
The air crackled with tension as Aelion faced the mysterious woman, her silhouette barely illuminated by the flickering light that seemed to bend around her. “Are you ready to embrace the truth, Aelion?” Her voice was a haunting melody, echoing in the darkness, leaving a chill that coursed through my veins.
I could only nod, my heart racing like a drum in my chest. Truth? What truth? The weight of her gaze felt like a shroud, pressing down on me. The shadows swirled, hinting at secrets I could barely comprehend. Just then, a gust of wind swept through the darkness, whispering something I couldn’t quite catch.
“Find me, Aelion. I will show you what lies beyond the door,” she murmured, before her figure flickered like a candle in the wind, and just like that, she was gone, leaving only the oppressive silence behind.
“Whoa, Ael! What just happened?” Thalia’s voice pulled me back from the brink of panic, her wide eyes filled with concern.
“Dude, I think… I think she knows something about the door and Professor Verend!” I stammered, still reeling from the encounter.
Felix, who had been fidgeting with the edges of his sleeves, shot me a questioning glance. “The door? You mean the one that’s been haunting your dreams?”
“Yup! And it’s time we do something about it. I can’t shake the feeling that this woman is our only lead.” My mind raced as I contemplated the magnitude of what we needed to do.
“Okay, but how do we even find her?” Thalia pressed, biting her lip as she shifted her weight from one foot to another.
“Research,” I declared, a newfound determination coursing through me. “Let’s hit the archives! There has to be something there about lost souls, doors, or... anything that could lead us to her!”
Felix nodded, enthusiasm lighting up his features. “Let’s go! I’m ready to uncover some secrets!”
With my heart racing and the thrill of the hunt igniting my spirit, we stormed into the university library, a place I’d often found solace but now felt more like a treasure trove of mysteries. Dust motes danced in the sunlight filtering through the tall windows, and I couldn’t help but feel that, just like those motes, we were about to uncover something significant, something that had been hidden away for far too long.
“Where should we start?” Thalia asked, running her fingers along the spines of countless books.
“Let’s look for anything related to the door,” I suggested, flipping through old texts and journals. “And maybe we can find something about Professor Verend’s research too. I mean, he was always diving into the unknown. Maybe he knew about the door!”
Felix moved closer, peering over my shoulder. “Dude, what if this door is like, a gateway or something? Like a portal to another realm? What if it’s why the professor disappeared?”
“Chill with the ‘other realm’ vibes, Felix!” Thalia teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “But hey, that would be epic. I mean, what if the professor got sucked into the door? Like, literally?”
“Guys!” I said, feeling the rush of adrenaline. “Focus! We need to find concrete evidence first.”
As we sifted through stacks of papers, the atmosphere thickened with anticipation. The more we unearthed, the more it felt like we were pulling back the veil on a hidden world. My fingers trembled as I turned the pages of an ancient journal, the ink faded but the words sharp with intrigue.
“Listen to this,” I said, reading aloud, “In this place, where walls conceal the past, doors may be thresholds to the unknown. Beware the whispers they carry; they echo the lives of those who sought what lay beyond and never returned.”
The three of us exchanged glances, a chill creeping up my spine. “This can’t be just a coincidence,” I murmured. “What if… what if this is all connected?”
Thalia bit her lip, a serious expression crossing her face. “We need to dig deeper. What else is in there?”
Suddenly, the door to the archives creaked open, and the unmistakable figure of our old professor, Professor Hargrave, appeared. His brow was furrowed, his eyes narrowing at us. “What are you three doing here?” he asked, the tone of his voice thick with skepticism.
“Uh, just, you know, researching,” I replied, trying to sound casual even though my heart was racing.
“I hope you’re not dabbling in things beyond your understanding,” he warned, glancing suspiciously at the scattered papers. “Curiosity can be dangerous.”
“We’re not afraid of a little danger, sir,” Felix chimed in, trying to sound brave but betraying a hint of nervousness.
Professor Hargrave raised an eyebrow. “Just be cautious. The past can be a slippery slope, and not everyone returns from their explorations.”
Once he left, an uneasy silence fell over us.
“Okay, that was weird,” Thalia said, her voice a mere whisper.
“Yeah, like he knew something,” I agreed, glancing at the door through which he had exited. My mind was racing with possibilities. What did he know?
We resumed our search, the air thick with tension as we uncovered more references to doors and lost souls. Each tale we uncovered made the knot in my stomach tighten. The more I read, the more it felt like our lives were intertwined with something far bigger than I could grasp.
As the hours ticked by, we finally stumbled upon a faded newspaper clipping that sent a chill down my spine. “Mysterious Disappearance: Local Scholar Vanishes,” it read, the headline blaring with an eerie resonance.
“Wait, this was about Professor Verend!” Felix exclaimed, pointing at the date.
“Guys, look!” I gestured at the article, “It says here that he was last seen entering an old building known for its historical doors. They say those who enter may never return.” My voice trembled as I read the chilling lines.
“Dude, this is it!” Thalia exclaimed, eyes wide. “We have to go there!”
“No! Are you crazy? We can’t just waltz into some haunted building!” I protested, the thought sending waves of fear through me.
“But what if the woman knows something? What if she’s waiting for us?” Felix urged, his enthusiasm infectious but terrifying at the same time.
“Fine,” I relented, my heart racing with fear and exhilaration. “But we stick together, okay? No one goes off alone.”
With the gravity of our discovery weighing on us, I could feel the thrill of the chase igniting my spirit. The door, the woman, the professor—everything was linked in a web of mystery. As we prepared to leave the library, a sense of urgency filled the air.
“Are you ready for this, Ael?” Thalia asked, her voice steady but her eyes revealing her apprehension.
“Ready or not, we have to find the truth,” I replied, determination flooding through me. “The unknown awaits us.”
But just as we stepped outside, a chilling wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of something sweet yet rotten. I glanced back at the library, feeling the weight of unspoken warnings hanging in the air.
Then, without warning, a soft voice floated towards me from the shadows, “You think you’re ready, Aelion? But remember, the truth comes at a cost…”
My heart raced as I turned to see the woman from my visions, her ethereal form dissolving into the darkness, leaving me breathless with questions. Who was she? What did she know?
“Wait!” I called out, but she vanished like smoke, leaving only the echoes of her haunting words lingering in the air.
As I stood frozen, I knew one thing for certain: our quest had only just begun, and the answers we sought might lead us deeper into a reality that was far more complex and perilous than we could have ever imagined.
As we stepped into the late afternoon sun, the world outside the library felt impossibly bright and cheerful. But inside me, a storm of anticipation brewed. “Ael, are you okay?” Thalia asked, her tone shifting to one of concern as she noticed my expression.
“Yeah, I’m cool,” I replied, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes. “Just... trying to wrap my head around everything. I mean, that woman! And the door! It’s like, the universe is playing a really intense game of hide-and-seek with us.”
Felix snickered, bouncing on his heels. “Totally! Like, if we were characters in a horror movie, we’d definitely be those clueless teens running toward the danger instead of away from it. Classic move, right?”
Thalia rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her amusement. “Ugh, you guys are ridiculous! But I mean, can you blame us? We might actually be onto something huge!”
“Exactly!” I chimed in, feeling the adrenaline surge again. “This isn’t just some urban legend; it’s like we’re part of an epic saga or something. And you know what they say about curiosity—”
“—it killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back?” Felix interrupted, grinning widely.
“Exactly!” I laughed, shaking my head. “Let’s be the weird kids who solve mysteries instead of becoming cautionary tales.”
The laughter faded as we approached the imposing silhouette of the old building rumored to hold secrets within its walls. The closer we got, the more I felt a tug at my heart. It was a mix of excitement and dread. “Okay, guys,” I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. “We have to stick together, remember? No wandering off. If we’re gonna do this, we do it as a team.”
Thalia nodded vigorously, her determination evident. “Totally! We’re like, the Scooby-Doo gang but cooler. Let’s find out what’s behind that door!”
Felix, with a mock serious expression, declared, “And if there are ghosts, I’m definitely not sharing my snacks with them!”
“Baka naman they’re friendly ghosts?” Thalia joked, her laughter echoing against the building’s ancient facade. “Maybe they just want to hang out and vibe!”
As we reached the entrance, the door creaked open, inviting us into the dimly lit interior. Dust particles danced in the shafts of light that pierced through the cracked windows, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that made my skin prickle with both fear and excitement.
“Okay, let’s explore,” I whispered, leading the way. My heart raced, each beat echoing in my ears. The air was thick with anticipation, like the calm before a storm.
Inside, the hallways twisted and turned, seemingly endless, as if they were alive and leading us deeper into the unknown. “Dude, this place is creepy but kinda cool, right?” Felix remarked, glancing around as if expecting a ghost to pop out and greet us.
“Creepy? More like, an aesthetic! I feel like I’m in an indie horror film!” Thalia said, her voice filled with wonder. “Let’s just hope we don’t end up as the main characters who get picked off one by one!”
I chuckled nervously, peeking into a room filled with dusty furniture draped in white sheets. “Okay, so what do we actually look for?”
“Um, anything that screams ‘mystical door’?” Felix suggested, waving his arms dramatically. “Or, like, a lost soul who needs our help? Who knows, we might even find a hidden treasure!”
“Or a really ugly painting,” Thalia teased, elbowing Felix playfully. “You know how these old places are.”
As we explored, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. The shadows seemed to shift and twitch at the edges of my vision, whispering secrets I couldn’t decipher. “Guys, I have a weird feeling…” I started, but just then, a loud crash echoed from the far end of the hall.
“What was that?!” Thalia yelped, her eyes wide.
“Only one way to find out!” Felix declared, his adventurous spirit flaring up.
“Wait, we should be careful,” I cautioned, but my words barely registered as they raced down the corridor, their excitement contagious. Reluctantly, I followed, my heart pounding harder with each step.
As we rounded the corner, we discovered an old, ornate door standing ajar, splintered wood framing a deep, inky blackness beyond. “This has to be it!” Felix exclaimed, eyes gleaming with thrill. “The door! I can feel it!”
“Are you sure we should—” I began, but the thrill of discovery drowned out my hesitation. I took a deep breath, bracing myself for whatever lay ahead.
“Let’s do this!” Thalia said, pushing the door open wider. A rush of cold air enveloped us, filled with a faint, sweet scent that reminded me of damp earth and blooming flowers.
“Whoa, what is this?” Felix whispered, stepping through first.
The moment we crossed the threshold, the door creaked shut behind us with an ominous finality. I turned to find us in a vast, cavernous space illuminated by flickering lanterns hanging from the ceiling, their light casting long, eerie shadows on the stone walls.
“Guys… this is... insane,” I breathed, my heart racing with both awe and dread. The air was thick with a sense of history, as if the walls were whispering tales of lost souls and forgotten dreams.
In the center of the room, an intricate mosaic depicted a swirling vortex surrounded by mythical creatures and ancient symbols. My fingers tingled as I reached out to touch the cool, rough surface. “What do you think this means?” I asked, glancing back at my friends.
“I mean, if this doesn’t scream ‘portal,’ I don’t know what does!” Felix replied, his voice low with reverence.
Suddenly, the ground beneath us trembled slightly, and the lanterns flickered violently, casting distorted shadows that twisted into unsettling shapes. “Aelion, what’s happening?” Thalia shouted, her voice laced with panic.
“I... I don’t know!” I stammered, stepping back. “Maybe we should—”
Before I could finish, the mosaic glowed brilliantly, illuminating the room and bathing us in a warm, golden light. “What the—” Felix started, eyes wide as the symbols began to shift and swirl, creating a mesmerizing dance.
Then, from the center of the mosaic, a figure emerged—an ethereal woman, her features blurring in and out of focus. She looked eerily similar to the woman from my visions. “You’ve come seeking the truth, Aelion,” she said, her voice echoing around us like a haunting melody.
“Y-you know my name?” I gasped, my heart pounding.
“Of course,” she replied, her gaze piercing through the dimness. “But truth comes at a cost. Are you willing to pay it?”
The room felt charged with energy, the air thickening with unspoken promises and unfulfilled desires. My mind raced with questions, but one stood out above the rest. “What do you mean by ‘cost’?”
The woman smiled—a cryptic, knowing smile that sent shivers down my spine. “To uncover what lies beyond the door, you must confront your greatest fears and deepest regrets. Only then can you claim the knowledge you seek.”
“Wait, what? Ael, this is getting really intense,” Thalia said, glancing nervously at me.
“Yeah, like, do we really want to go deeper into this?” Felix added, shifting uneasily.
But I was drawn to her, my curiosity overwhelming my fear. “I... I’m ready. I need to know what’s behind the door.”
The woman’s smile widened, and in that moment, I felt an undeniable pull toward her. “Very well, then. Let the journey begin.”
As the room warped and the light intensified, I felt my heart race with a mix of exhilaration and dread. What truths awaited us? What shadows would we face?
Just as the room started to fade, the woman’s voice echoed in my mind, “Remember, Aelion, the truth is not always what you desire. Are you truly prepared to embrace it?”
And then, darkness enveloped us, leaving behind a tantalizing question that would echo in my thoughts: What if the truth was more terrifying than the darkness itself?Download Novelah App
