Chapter 19: Fleeing The Eastern Kingdom.

As dusk's warm, golden light bathed my chambers, the savory aromas of dinner wafted through the corridors, contrasting sharply with the grief still heavy in my heart. The soft knock on the door broke the melancholic silence.
Queen Catherine entered, her elegant presence and compassionate gaze offering solace. "Helen, dear, I've come to offer my deepest condolences for Lancaster's tragic passing. May his memory forever reside in our hearts."
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I rose to embrace her. "Thank you, Your Majesty. Your kindness brings comfort during this dark hour."
Catherine guided me to a plush sofa, sitting beside me. Her gentle touch and empathetic words soothed my anguish. "George's actions have shattered our family's harmony and trust. Lancaster's absence leaves an unfillable void."
My voice trembled. "His cruelty destroyed my happiness, my future."
Catherine's expression turned grave, concern etched on her face. "I must share a secret, Helen. George persists in his relentless pursuit of war against the North Kingdom. Commander Ryder has been dispatched to assume Lancaster's command at the campsite."
Alarm surged. "Commander Ryder? The ruthless warrior?"
Catherine nodded solemnly. "Yes. George seeks swift conquest, exploiting Lancaster's demise. Ryder's brutal tactics will fuel bloodshed, destabilizing our realm."
Indignation flared. "This war benefits no one but George, sating his ambition at our kingdom's expense."
Catherine's eyes locked onto mine, resolve burning bright. "Indeed, Helen. Our kingdom suffers while George pursues glory. We must safeguard Edwin's future, protect our realm."
Determination ignited within. "We must act, Your Majesty. Unite against George's destructive ambition. For Lancaster's memory, our family's redemption."
With resolve forged, we began strategizing, our bond strengthened against tyranny.
Queen Catherine's resolute expression mirrored my desperation in the dimly lit, ornate chamber. Soft candlelight danced across her determined face, etching resolve.
"Helen, I vow to secure your escape," Catherine declared firmly, voice gentle yet commanding. "Tonight, under darkness' protective veil, we'll sneak you and Edwin from the Eastern Kingdom's oppressive grasp."
My eyes widened with hope, grasping the promise. "How, Your Majesty? Castle walls are heavily guarded, and patrols roam."
Catherine's calm demeanor reassured. "Sir Ken, a trusted loyalist and skilled knight, commands a discreet squadron. Expertly trained, they'll navigate hidden passages, avoiding detection."
I leaned forward, intrigue and gratitude mingling. "Disguised as merchants? Explain, please."
"Simple, earth-toned attire and hooded cloaks will conceal identities. Safety lies in anonymity," Catherine elaborated. "Sir Ken's men will escort you through secret tunnels, bypassing guarded gates."
Tears pricked at my eyes. "Your Majesty, I'm forever grateful. Your bravery saves us from King George's cruelty."
Catherine's warm smile illuminated. "For Lancaster's cherished memory, your freedom and Edwin's future, Helen. Our kingdom's redemption hinges on this perilous endeavor."
I grasped her hands fervently. "Ensure Edwin's safety above all. His life is paramount."
"Tonight, under Sir Ken's stalwart protection, you'll ride together," Catherine promised solemnly. "Separate carriages await, prepared for swift departure to the North Kingdom's borders."
"Where do we meet Sir Ken?" I inquired.
"In the castle's eastern courtyard, midnight. Avoid detection; wear provided disguises. Caution dictates silence. Ken's signal: a lantern with two candles."
I nodded fervently. "We'll be there, disguised and vigilant."
Catherine rose, determination shining. "Tonight, Helen, we defy tyranny. For our kingdom's future, family redemption and Lancaster's honored memory."
With resolve strengthened, I awaited nightfall, freedom's promise beckoning.
Night's velvety darkness enveloped the castle, shadows dancing upon ancient stone walls. I slipped silently to Edwin's chambers, heart racing with anticipation, concern for his safety and the weight of our impending escape.
A soft knock on the door preceded my entrance. Edwin opened it, curiosity etched on his youthful face, illuminated by flickering candles within.
"Mother?" Edwin questioned, surprise mingling with wariness.
"Come with me, Edwin," I urged, whispering urgently. "We must away, swiftly and silently."
Edwin's brow furrowed, perplexity deepening. "What's happening, Mother? Why this secrecy?"
I glanced cautiously around the corridor, ensuring solitude. "No questions now, dear Edwin. Trust me, as you have always."
Edwin's eyes narrowed, sensing the gravity and urgency. "Is it another escape attempt?"
I nodded subtly, confirming his intuition. "Quickly, silently, we must proceed."
Edwin's face illuminated with determination, Lancaster's memory fueling resolve. "For his sake, for our freedom."
Without another word, Edwin followed, trust in me unwavering. We glided through dark, winding corridors, avoiding torches' golden glow. Footsteps echoed softly, urgency propelling us forward.
"Tonight, we leave forever," I reassured, voice barely audible.
Edwin's grip on my hand tightened, solidarity and hope shining. "Together, Mother, as always."
We approached the eastern courtyard, Sir Ken awaiting, lantern signal flickering like a beacon. Two candles cast an reassuring glow, confirming our escape route.
Sir Ken stood poised, cloaked in shadows, the soft glow of his lantern signal reassuring amidst darkness. The eastern courtyard's silence was a comforting veil for our escape.
"Your Majesty," Sir Ken whispered, bowing deeply, his voice barely audible. "Tonight, we embark on freedom's perilous path."
I nodded gravely. "Sir Ken, our eternal gratitude for safeguarding Edwin and me."
Edwin's gaze locked onto the knight, awe and trust mingling. "Sir Ken, our protector, guardian of hope."
With swift efficiency, Sir Ken guided us toward awaiting carriages. Disguised as merchant wagons, their unassuming appearance belied their crucial role.
"Drivers, clad in nondescript attire, held reins with practiced calm. "To the North Kingdom's borders," Sir Ken instructed softly. "May fortune, guidance and stealth shield your journey."
I enveloped Edwin tightly, heart overflowing. "Fear not, my resilient son. Freedom's promise beckons."
Edwin's resolve strengthened, Lancaster's memory burning bright. "For Father, Mother. Our kingdom's future."
Queen Catherine emerged from darkness, her unexpected presence stirring surprise and gratitude.
"Godspeed, Helen, Edwin," she whispered urgently, eyes shining. "May our kingdom's future brighten with your hard-won freedom. Tonight, tyranny's chains break."
Tears pricked at my eyes. "Your Majesty, eternal gratitude for risking all."
Catherine's smile illuminated. "For Lancaster, our realm and justice."
The carriages rolled forward, silent wheels disappearing into night's protective embrace. Shadows swallowed our departure, freedom's journey unfolding.
Darkness enveloped the carriages, wheels softly creaking as freedom's promise grew with each passing moment. Shadows danced upon surrounding landscapes, our silent escape unfolding.
Inside, Edwin grasped my hand, curiosity shining. "Mother, what lies ahead? What wonders await in the North Kingdom?"
"Our forgotten life, free from King George's tyranny and cruelty," I replied firmly, resolve etched. "The North Kingdom's alliance will safeguard our future, ensuring Edwin, you'll grow strong, wise and happy."
Edwin's eyes sparkled with hope. "And Father's memory? Will it remain sacred?"
"Forever honored, his legacy guiding us," I vowed solemnly. "Lancaster's courage inspires our journey, his love forever in our hearts."
Sir Ken rode alongside, vigilant, scanning horizons. The eastern landscape unfolded, a mysterious canvas of rolling hills, awakening forests and golden dawn hues.
Hours passed, morning sun climbing. Our carriages traversed lush meadows, River Eldon's gentle flow marking freedom's threshold.
Suddenly, Sir Ken reined in his horse, signaling halt. "We near the North Kingdom's borders," he announced softly.
Before us lay the majestic River Eldon, its tranquil waters reflecting sunrise splendor. Freedom's gateway beckoned.
Edwin's smile broadened, radiant. "Our old home, Mother. A realm of promise."
Tears of joy pricked at my eyes. "Free at last, my child. Tonight, tyranny's chains break."
Sir Ken dismounted, assisting us. "Welcome to your old life, Your Majesties. May happiness, peace and justice reign."
