Chapter 20: Back Home.

Upon entering the North Kingdom's majestic palace, Lord Ravenswood hastened to greet us, warmth radiating from his weathered face. His robust voice echoed through marble halls.
"Your Majesties, welcome! Freedom's triumph is sweet indeed!"
Edwin and I descended, gratitude shining. Lord Ravenswood's paternal embrace enveloped us, soothing weary hearts.
"Lord Ravenswood, steadfast friend and pillar of strength," I said, tears welling. "Your unwavering support sustains us through turmoil."
"Forever at your service, Helen," he vowed solemnly. "King Edward's cherished memory unites us."
Other lords converged, relief and jubilation etched on their faces. Lord Harrington, Lord Worthington and Lord Windsor offered heartfelt greetings.
"Your Majesties, our hearts swell with joy," Lord Harrington exclaimed. "Tyranny's shackles broken, freedom's radiance illuminates."
Lord Worthington added, "North Kingdom's alliance stands resolute. Unity ensures justice."
Lord Windsor bowed deeply. "We pledge unwavering loyalty, safeguarding your future."
Edwin's smile broadened as he shook hands. "Thank you, noble lords. Your support honors Father's enduring legacy."
Queen Liana, Prince Malcolm's widow, emerged from the shadows, her countenance reserved. Duty, not warmth, drove her approach.
"Welcome, Helen, Edwin," Queen Liana stated, her voice measured. "Your arrival concludes a perilous journey."
I curtsied respectfully. "Your Majesty, gratitude for sanctuary."
Tension lingered, a reminder of past complexities. Prince Malcolm's untimely passing and Lancaster's rivalry with King George had strained relations.
Yet, Lord Ravenswood's unwavering loyalty and the North Kingdom's honor-bound lords ensured our protection.
As feasting commenced, Edwin and I exchanged hopeful glances. Freedom's triumph eclipsed lingering doubts.
Amidst vibrant festivities, Queen Liana's gaze persistently drifted toward Edwin and me, her expression a nuanced blend of courtesy and concealed resentment. Beneath polished etiquette, simmering emotions betrayed lingering anguish. The weight of her husband's downfall and tragic demise hung heavy, a palpable reminder.
Memories of Prince Malcolm's unbridled ambition and treacherous actions haunted her. His ruthless quest for power drove him to seize Edwin's rightful throne. This reckless move ignited King George's wrath, fueling devastating war. The crushing defeat culminated in Prince Malcolm's tragic demise, leaving Liana with unrelenting sorrow.
Her thoughts seemed consumed by past turmoil. Eyes once radiant now clouded, reflecting inner turmoil. Lavish decorations, joyful laughter and warm candlelight only accentuated her pain.
Liana's gaze locked onto Edwin, then me, retracing events leading to her loss. Tension lingered, stark contrast to surrounding jubilation. Her eyes flashed with fleeting anger, sorrow and regret. Each glance conveyed unresolved emotions.
Lord Ravenswood, sensing unease, positioned himself strategically. Ever vigilant, his reassuring presence tempered tension.
"Your Majesty," I acknowledged, curtsying subtly, "your gracious hospitality overwhelms."
Queen Liana's polite smile hinted at strained emotions. "Tonight, Helen, we celebrate freedom. Yet memories linger, reminders of what's been lost."
I nodded empathetically. "Time heals wounds, Your Majesty. May peace, unity and forgiveness prevail."
Edwin placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, solidarity fortifying us against lingering resentment.
As festivities unfolded, Liana's demeanor gradually softened. Expressions yielded to gracious hostess, tempered by duty and courtesy. Wounds lingered, yet vulnerability gave way to dignified composure.
Lord Ravenswood stood tall, his resonant voice commanding attention. "Tomorrow, a glorious new era unfolds. Edwin, rightful monarch, shall ascend his throne."
The grand hall erupted into thunderous applause, cheers echoing off marble walls. Nobles, lords and ladies smiled, their faces aglow. Edwin's eyes sparkled, excitement tempered by solemn responsibility.
"Though merely 10 winters of age," Lord Ravenswood continued, "Edwin's innate wisdom, guided by his mother's sage counsel and noble lords' mentorship, shall navigate our realm's destiny."
I beamed proudly, heart swelling with pride. "Under Lord Ravenswood's, Lord Harrington's, Lord Worthington's and our noble lords' guidance, Edwin shall flourish."
Queen Liana's expression softened, reconciliation flickering. "The North Kingdom steadfastly supports its future monarch."
Lord Harrington stepped forward, loyalty shining. "We pledge unwavering fealty, ensuring Edwin's reign prospers."
Lord Worthington nodded vigorously. "Wisdom, justice and strength shall define his enlightened rule."
Edwin ascended the dais, youthful determination radiating. "I vow to honor Father's cherished legacy, safeguard our realm and uphold justice."
The assembly roared approval, their fervent acclaim resounding. Tomorrow's coronation promised renewal, hope and unity.
Preparations unfolded swiftly. Nobles, artisans and servants worked tirelessly. Tailors crafted majestic garments; jewelers polished precious stones. The grand cathedral's sanctum was meticulously sanitized and adorned with vibrant flowers and golden accents.
At dusk, Edwin and I strolled palace gardens, serene fountains and twilight's gentle hush enveloping us. "Mother, I'm ready," Edwin declared, resolve firm. "For Father, our kingdom and our people."
Tears of pride glistened. "You embody Edward's courage, Edwin. Lead wisely, with compassion and strength."
Edwin's smile broadened. "With you, Mother, and our noble lords, I'll forge a brighter future."
Lord Ravenswood ushered me into a secluded, ornate chamber, its velvet drapes and flickering candles ensuring confidentiality. His grave expression foretold urgency.
"Lord Ravenswood, your solemn demeanor hints at grave news," I observed, steeling myself.
"Helen, the Eastern Kingdom mobilizes its formidable forces," he revealed, voice hushed but resolute. "Reliable intelligence confirms imminent invasion, threatening our sovereignty."
I maintained composure, accustomed to turmoil's shadow. "I'm aware, Lord Ravenswood. King George's spies informed me of the Eastern Kingdom's aggressive posturing."
Lord Ravenswood's eyes widened in admiration. "Your foresight is remarkable, Helen. Few anticipate danger with such clarity."
"We cannot confront this threat without Edwin's coronation," I emphasized, conviction firm. "Our people require a rightful monarch for unity, morale and unwavering loyalty."
Lord Ravenswood nodded resolutely, his jaw set. "Agreed. The North Kingdom's stability hinges on Edwin's legitimate rule, ensuring nobles' allegiance."
"Once crowned, Edwin will rally our nobles, solidifying alliances and bolstering defenses," I reasoned, strategic thinking unfolding. "Unity under his leadership will fortify our stance."
"Time is precious," Lord Ravenswood stressed, urgency creeping into his tone. "Eastern Kingdom forces converge near our borders."
"I've discreetly ordered military preparations," I reassured. "Our seasoned generals and brave soldiers stand vigilant."
"Your strategic mind, Helen, serves Edwin and our realm exceptionally well," Lord Ravenswood praised.
"Together, we'll navigate this peril," I vowed.
"Shall we proceed with coronation preparations?" Lord Ravenswood inquired.
"Ensure all is in place for tomorrow," I instructed. "Edwin's ascension to the throne takes precedence. Let haste and precision guide our efforts."
Lord Ravenswood bowed deeply. "As you command, Helen. Unity, strength and swift action will carry us through."
