Zach felt a wave of nausea wash over him as Kong gestured towards a large monitor mounted on the wall. The room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from the monitor and a single, flickering neon sign that cast long shadows on the worn leather booths.
"That's him," Kong said, his voice a gravelly whisper. "The one you hit."
Zach leaned forward, his eyes glued to the screen. It was the street where he had hit the man, the same street he had been driving on that fateful night. The camera, positioned high above the street, captured a wide shot of the intersection. Cars sped by, their headlights cutting through the darkness. Pedestrians hurried along the sidewalk, their faces obscured by the shadows.
Then, he saw him. The man he had hit. He was walking across the street, his head down, his back turned to the camera. He was a blur of movement, a fleeting shadow in the darkness.
Zach could see the moment of impact, the flash of light, the man's body thrown into the air. He could see the car, his car, speeding away. He felt a pang of guilt, a sharp, piercing pain in his chest. He had hit him. He had hurt him. He had run away.
"He's lucky he wasn't killed," Kong said, his voice laced with a hint of amusement. "You were going pretty fast."
Zach winced, his stomach churning. He knew he had been speeding. He knew he hadn't been paying attention. He had been reckless, irresponsible, and now he was paying the price.
"What happened to him after that?" Zach asked, his voice barely a whisper. He needed to know. He needed to know if he was okay.
Kong shrugged, his gaze fixed on the screen. "He got up, dusted himself off, and walked away. He didn't seem too badly hurt. But he was definitely shaken up."
Zach felt a surge of relief. He was okay. He was alive. But the guilt remained. He had hit him. He had hurt him. He had run away.
"I need to find him," Zach said, his voice firming up. "I need to make things right."
"Well good thing I print what you need last night." "Really? Thank you so much it's a big help already." "Welllllll! You better not forget about our deal." "Yes boss I will not forget about that." "Don't call me boss just Kong, I see your potential i know with you my success will be easier, but just remember 1 mistake can end your breathe." Laughing said of kong to him. Kong stood up and walked over to a small desk in the corner. He pulled out a folder and flipped through it, then pulled out a few photographs and placed them on the table in front of Zach.
"Here," Kong said, his voice gruff. "These are the best shots we could get. Good luck finding him."
Zach stared at the pictures. They were grainy and blurry, but they were clear enough to show the man's face. He was a young man, with dark hair and eyes, and a scar running down his left cheek.
"If you need more help, just call me right away," Kong said, his voice softening slightly. "My spies are always watching."
Zach nodded, his heart pounding in his chest. He had to find him. He had to make things right. He picked up the photographs and tucked them into his pocket.
"Thank you, Kong," Zach said, his voice barely a whisper.
Kong nodded and turned to leave. "Good luck, kid. You're gonna need it."
Zach watched Kong leave, his mind racing. He had to find this man. He had to make things right. He had to face his guilt. He had to find him.
He looked back at the photographs in his hand. He was determined to find him. He had to.
"Zach!" Ethan called him, "How's everything?" He added. "I have the photos already, but let's go home first I need to check my daughters. "Good! Let's go" When he arrive his daughters run towards him happily. "Daddy!"
"Daddy!"
Mechaela and Mezachela , Zach's twin daughters, were a whirlwind of blonde curls and excited giggles. They launched themselves at Zach, their tiny arms wrapping around his neck in a tight embrace.
"Daddy, we missed you!" Mezachela squealed, her face beaming with joy.
"We made you a picture!" Mezachela chimed in, her voice barely audible over mechaela enthusiastic chatter.
Zach felt a wave of love wash over him. His daughters. His girls. They were the only things that mattered in the world. He hugged them back, his heart swelling with a mixture of love and guilt. He had to protect them. He had to keep them safe. He had to make sure they never knew the darkness he was now entangled in.
"I missed you too, girls," Zach said, his voice thick with emotion. "I missed you so much."
