Chapter 13: Homecoming in Whitney town and Revelation
The quaint, sleepy town of Whitney seemed to sigh in the late afternoon sun. The air was thick with the scent of pine and freshly cut grass, a stark contrast to the bustling city life Zach had left behind. He and Ethan had driven for hours, their conversation punctuated by the silence of their shared worry.
As they pulled into the driveway of Zach's childhood home, a wave of nostalgia washed over him. The white picket fence, the sprawling lawn, the porch swing that had witnessed countless summer evenings – it all felt like a distant dream.
Zach's mother, Eleanor, stood on the porch, her face a mixture of surprise and delight. She rushed towards them, her arms open wide.
"Zach! Ethan! What a surprise! I haven't seen you in ages!"
Zach embraced his mother, feeling a warmth spread through him. He hadn't realized how much he had missed her, the comfort of her presence, the familiar scent of her lavender perfume.
"Mom, I'm so glad to see you," Zach said, his voice thick with emotion. "I needed to come home."
"Well, you're certainly welcome," Eleanor said, her eyes twinkling with a mixture of concern and curiosity. "But where's Mekaila? Why isn't she with you?"
Zach's heart sank. He had been dreading this question. He had hoped to avoid it, to pretend everything was okay. But he knew he couldn't hide the truth from his mother.
"Mom, it's complicated," Zach said, his voice barely a whisper. "I... I can't explain it right now."
Eleanor's brow furrowed, her eyes filled with concern. "Zach, what's going on? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Zach took a deep breath, his mind racing. He had to tell her something, but he couldn't tell her everything. Not yet.
"Mom, Mekaila is in Singapore," Zach said, trying to sound casual. "I had to leave the girls for a couple of days because we need to go see her."
Eleanor's face brightened. "Oh, how exciting! Singapore! I always wanted to visit there. But tell me, why the sudden trip? Is everything alright?"
Zach hesitated, but he couldn't bring himself to lie to his mother. "It's... it's a bit of a family matter," he said, his voice strained. "I need to be there for her."
"Well, you go and take care of her," Eleanor said, her voice filled with warmth. "Don't you worry about the girls. I'll take good care of them. You two go enjoy yourselves."
Zach felt a wave of relief wash over him. His mother was so trusting, so loving. He knew he could count on her to take care of his daughters.
"Thank you, Mom," Zach said, his voice filled with gratitude. "I don't know what I would do without you."
"Nonsense, my dear," Eleanor said, her eyes twinkling. "Now, come on in, you two. I want you to meet your younger brother. He's been wanting to meet you for ages. He’s been separated from you since you were eight."
Zach was confused. He had no memory of a younger brother. He had been an only child, as far as he knew.
"Mom, what are you talking about?" Zach asked, his voice filled with confusion.
Eleanor smiled, her eyes filled with a knowing glint. "You'll see," she said, leading them into the house.
They walked into the living room, where a tall, muscular man sat on the couch, his eyes fixed on them. He had dark hair, piercing blue eyes, and a strong jawline. He looked like a younger, more rugged version of Zach.
"Zach, this is your brother, Marcus," Eleanor said, her voice filled with pride. "Marcus, this is your brother, Zach."
Zach stared at the man, his mind reeling. He couldn't believe it. He had a brother. A brother he never knew existed.
"Hello, Zach," Marcus said, his voice deep and resonant. "It's nice to finally meet you."
Zach nodded, his mind still struggling to process the information.
Ethan, who had been observing the scene with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, stepped forward. He looked at Marcus, his eyes widening in shock.
"I... I know you," Ethan said, his voice trembling slightly. "I've seen you before."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, his gaze fixed on Ethan. "Have you?"
Ethan took a deep breath, his mind racing. He had to tell Zach. He had to tell him the truth.
"Zach, the man we're looking for... the man you hit... it's Marcus," Ethan said, his voice barely a whisper.
Zach stared at his brother, his mind reeling. His brother. The man he had hit. The man he was supposed to find.
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. The weight of the situation, the guilt, the fear, the desperation – it all crashed down on him.
He looked at his brother, his eyes filled with a mixture of shock, guilt, and confusion. He had no idea what to say. He had no idea what to do.
Ethan, sensing Zach's turmoil, stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Zach, it's okay," Ethan said, his voice filled with concern. "We'll figure this out."
But Zach wasn't sure if he could figure this out. He had just discovered a brother he never knew existed, and that brother was the man he had been searching for. He had no idea what to do. He had no idea what to say.
"Are you alright Zach? Actually it was a pleasant to know you." Marcus said while giving him a hug. "Hi Tito I'm mechaela and she's Mezachela." Mechaela said to Marcus. "Your both pretty and kind , I feel love with you my pretty sweet hearts" Marcus replied. Because of so many understandable and unacceptable happening Zack talk to his mom while Ethan watching over her daughters spending them with Marcus.
