Chapter 21: Just Business.
As I arrived at the upscale restaurant for our lunch meeting, Jack followed closely behind me, his expression transformed into that of a diligent and professional employee. I had briefed him earlier, emphasizing the importance of maintaining his cover and ensuring that Alessandro saw him as a trusted associate, rather than a debtor who owed me $650,000.
"Remember, Jack, today you're my right-hand man," I had instructed, my voice firm but measured. "No slips, no mistakes. Alessandro needs to see you as a consummate professional, not a man struggling to pay off his debts."
Jack nodded, his eyes locked on mine, his expression a mask of determination. "Got it, boss. I won't let you down."
Now, as we entered the restaurant, Alessandro rose from his seat, a warm smile spreading across his face. His punctuality was impressive, a clear attempt to curry favor and demonstrate his commitment to our agreement.
"Alessandro," I said, extending my hand in greeting. "Good to see you again. I trust Victor briefed you on our discussion?"
"Yes, he did," Alessandro replied, his handshake firm and confident. "I'm eager to move forward and finalize the details."
I gestured to Jack, who stood respectfully to the side, his eyes fixed on Alessandro. "You know my associate, Jack. He'll be joining us today to ensure everything runs smoothly."
Alessandro's gaze flicked to Jack, his expression neutral, but I detected a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Of course. Welcome, Jack."
As we took our seats, the waiter arrived to take our orders. I opted for the grilled salmon, while Jack chose the steak, cooked medium-rare. Alessandro selected the vegetarian option, his eyes never leaving mine as he spoke.
"I've been thinking a lot about our agreement," Alessandro said, his voice measured. "I'm convinced it's the right move for me, for my business and my future."
I nodded, my expression encouraging. "I'm glad to hear that, Alessandro. We're committed to making this work."
Once the waiter departed, I leaned back in my chair, my tone turning businesslike. "Alessandro, regarding the transfer of funds to Donatelli's account... When can we expect you to be ready?"
Alessandro hesitated, his brow furrowing in concentration. "I'd say within the next 48 hours. I need to finalize some arrangements, ensure everything is in order."
I nodded, my mind racing with the implications. By clearing Alessandro's debt to Donatelli, I was potentially gaining a valuable ally, one who would owe me a significant favor.
"And you're confident Donatelli won't suspect anything?" I asked, my eyes locked on Alessandro's, searching for any sign of doubt.
"I've taken precautions," Alessandro replied, his voice confident. "My people will handle the transfer discreetly. Donatelli won't have any reason to doubt its legitimacy."
Jack spoke up, his tone professional and detached. "Sir, if I may ask, what's the estimated amount we're looking at?"
Alessandro's gaze flicked to Jack before returning to mine. "Two million dollars."
I nodded, my expression impassive, but my mind whirling with calculations. The sum was substantial, but the potential payoff was worth the risk.
"Very well," I said finally. "I'll ensure the funds are available. Jack, take note of the details. I want a thorough report on the transfer process."
"Yes, sir," Jack replied, his expression obedient, as he pulled out his phone to take notes.
Alessandro's eyes narrowed, his gaze darting between Jack and me. He knew he was in debt to me now, and I would collect.
The waiter returned with our meals, and the conversation shifted to more mundane topics, but my mind remained focused on the bigger picture.
Was I pulling the right strings by clearing Alessandro's debt? Only time would tell.
As we ate, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing a high-stakes game, one where the consequences of failure would be catastrophic.
But I was willing to take that risk, for the potential reward was too great to ignore.
I leaned forward, my voice taking on a more serious and deliberate tone, emphasizing the gravity of the task at hand. "Alessandro, I have another critical assignment for you, one that demands utmost discretion, finesse, and strategic thinking."
Alessandro's eyes locked onto mine, his expression attentive and inquisitive, sensing the weight of the request. "What do you need me to do, exactly?"
"I want you to facilitate a meeting between Jack and Luca, Donatelli's brother," I instructed, my gaze flicking to Jack, who nodded subtly, his eyes gleaming with understanding.
Alessandro's brow furrowed, his mind already racing with potential implications and complications. "What's the purpose of this meeting? What's the end goal?"
"I want Jack to gain Luca's trust," I explained, my tone measured and deliberate. "Introduce him as a trusted partner, someone who can facilitate mutually beneficial arrangements and lucrative business opportunities."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed, his expression thoughtful and calculating. "You want me to plant Jack within Luca's organization, essentially creating a mole."
I nodded, my expression resolute. "Exactly. We need reliable eyes and ears on the inside, gathering critical intel on Donatelli's operations and future plans."
Alessandro's expression turned contemplative, weighing the risks and potential benefits. "And what's the ultimate objective? What do you hope to achieve with this maneuver?"
"Information," I replied, my tone firm. "We need to stay informed about Donatelli's and Luca's plans, anticipating their moves before they happen. Jack will gather intel, feed it back to us, and help us stay one step ahead in this high-stakes game."
Alessandro nodded, his mind racing with the intricacies and potential challenges. "I understand the strategy, but it won't be easy. Luca's notoriously cautious, almost paranoid."
"I'm aware of the risks," I acknowledged, my expression grim. "But Jack's unique skills and experience make him ideal for this role. He'll know how to navigate Luca's men, gain their trust, and provide us with invaluable insights."
Jack spoke up, his voice confident and assured. "Sir, I've handled similar situations before. I'll ensure I gain Luca's trust and provide critical intel."
Alessandro nodded, his expression resolute. "I'll make the necessary arrangements. When do you want this meeting to take place?"
"ASAP," I replied, my tone urgent. "The sooner Jack's in place, the better equipped we'll be to counter Donatelli's moves."
Alessandro pulled out his phone, dialing a number. "I'll set up a meeting with Luca for tomorrow. Jack will be introduced as a potential business partner with lucrative connections."
I nodded, my mind already racing ahead to the next phase. "Keep me updated on the progress. And Alessandro?"
"Yes?"
"Ensure Jack's safety and well-being at all times. If anything goes wrong, if Luca suspects even a hint of deception..."
Alessandro's expression turned grim, his voice firm. "I'll take care of it. Jack will be protected, and we'll have contingency plans in place."
As Alessandro ended the call, Jack turned to me, his eyes locked onto mine, a sense of determination and understanding passing between us.
"Sir, I'm ready. I'll get the job done, no matter what it takes."
I nodded, a sense of confidence and reassurance washing over me. With Jack in place, we'd gain a critical advantage in our game against Donatelli, potentially tipping the scales in our favor.
"Let's get to work," I said, my voice low and determined. "The stakes are high, but the reward will be worth it."Download Novelah App
