Chapter 57: Grandad’s Warning Nick’s POV “Who’s nana Felly?” He asked and they went silent. “The woman you took care of her,” Lora answered and he remembered the old woman she was in her baby picture. “They killed her, that means there is a possibility that it was them who killed her father too.” Ben fell into his thoughts but Lora wasn’t thinking the same. “I honestly don’t know. Miss Fairly wasn’t telling me something. If she would just tell me what she saw happened that night. How did she find her father’s body or why did she escape from their house that night? She would walk just like that and live with his father without reason.” Lora had been wondering since then. “Maybe she did really kill him.” Horrified Nick instantly turned his head to his cousin so as Lora. “That’s insane!” Lora angrily spat before Nick could. “I may don’t look professional but I know how to take my job seriously, I am just entertaining what is obvious for now with no bias. I understand, she looks innocent and she matters to you two. But you have said yourself, she’s smart and for me, she might be a great deceiver. I couldn’t just disregard the possibility that suits the mold more. She can’t tell us what happened, she walked out of their house that night he died. She didn’t deny a thing. The mafias, they knew nothing about this, you, Fred, and who knew about this? No one, whoever set up Nick, knew Nick. He knew that he’ll investigate her.” “Why would she ruin her life?” Nick asked. “Lora said she can get away from this easily.” But Nick couldn’t accept his idea. “Well, she’s not doing anything to get out!” “Because she’s guilty!” “If you don’t really have a bias in your theories, why can’t you entertain that idea that he might kill himself and ask Fera to leave.” Ben saw how triggered Nick was and shut his mouth. Nick’s chest was raising aggressively. “You can’t right? Cause he’s your idol and he’s so clean in your eyes. You want this case for your idol’s justice!” “Man, calm down. You are missing the point.” Ben tried to calm his cousin down. “What’s your point then?” “Boys, calm down.” Lora stepped in. She sat back on the couch. “Give it a rest. You have other trouble to face tomorrow.” “Nikolai once tied me on my foot and hung me upside down while interrogating, I hope Nikolas would go easy on you,” Ben said sign raising his hand as a sign of surrender. There he realized he was in serious trouble. An image of grandfather in his cane with a serious expression. ‘He must be heard what happened to us.’ He looked at Ben who had had bruises and his lips were cut on the left side. And he had a gunshot on his shoulder. He felt a massive slap across his face when he did something that horrifies his grandmother. ‘Shit,’ Lora decided to sleep on the couch, so he decided to rest his head too. After a few hours of trying to sleep, he gave up and looked at the ceiling. He wondered if Ben could sleep after they went through. But to his surprise, Ben wasn’t sleeping but looking at the girl sleeping peacefully on the couch. “She could eat you alive.” Ben turned to him and shook his head slowly. “As if your Fera is tamed.” A smile drew on his lips, his Fera. ‘I hope she’s mine.’ “You should sleep,” Ben said and his smile drop. “I can’t. Guilt keeps me awake.” “Guilt?” “We just took lives, Ben.” “I, you mean. I took lives. Not you, leave the guilt to me.” He dismissed it like that. “If life is horrible, the real world behind it is sickening. What I did was not it still. You just saw a bit of what it is like in my field. In her field, in their field.” And she looked at Lora. “When she said, you are not ready to meddle Fuentes business, I think so too. Fera isn’t just Fera as she appears. I’m not saying she did that, but she can. Impossible to her father but she can.” Nick lost his words and looked at Lora. “How can you say so?” “Cause she’s a Fuentes. Just sleep for now.” Ben looked at the ceiling and Nick did too. Why they define it as Fuentes, their family is of controversy. But can you just a person by their families background? Would judge the whole race of a doing of one of them? What is it being a Fuentes? He could help to ask. ‘Am I doing what is right? How would it cost me by entering her world? He didn’t have enough sleep cause her grandmother showed up before the hospital could turn their lights off.
“Kingston!” His second name was enough to take all his drowse away. He saw her with her horrified face looking at the bandage on his shoulder. “Lola,” he didn’t have the chance to add his words and choke by her strong embrace. “You really don’t think before jumping into a situation, huh? You would get me a heart attack. Oh, Jesus! What have you done this time? You didn’t even think of sliding into my inbox even once to let me know you are safe. I don’t know what to do with you, Kingston!” “Good morning too, Lola.” He forced his smile and looked at his grandad. “You messed up.” Enough words from his Lolo Nikolas that he didn’t like what was going on and what he did. He sat on the couch, Lora was long gone when he woke up. “You don’t just mess up, young man, you are doomed! Seriously? With a Fuentes! You don’t know how dangerous it was to be involved with them. You are just a boy! Look at you, you could barely move your hand.” “Lola, I’m fine. I may not know what I am doing but I’ll figure it out. This is important to me.” “When! When you’re already could pass through the wall?” His grandmother didn’t come to buy his excuses. “We are flying to the states this week. Fuentes is not good for you.” “What hell? Lo! What is this?” He asked his grandfather for a rescue, Ben had no plans of opening his eyes even though he was already awake. He wouldn’t dare to argue with his grandparents. “We have made up our mind, my decision is final and your grandad already agreed.” He shook his head and looked at his grandad. “Lolo, you know what this is to me.” “Why don’t you pay his bill out, Clarita?” “You know how messed up it is, Nick. I let you see how awful the situation is. But I know you can’t fix this, no one will unless Fred would fix this personally.” He couldn’t believe what he was saying. “Lo, I can’t. Don’t do this to me. I can’t just leave knowing how everything messed up because of me. My name was long involved, I can’t leave her in this situation.” “She’s safe, she’s in the safest place. Law isn’t her enemy here. I know that you have come to think how wide the mess is. How deep the wounds and how hard to put the piece together. But we have nothing to do with this.” “Lolo, please.” He felt powerless and hopeless hearing their decision. ‘I can’t fail her.’ “Ben can work with it and keep you updated to know what will be going to happen.” He knew he will never win this argument, they have made their mind and he couldn’t change it anymore. “I can’t leave her like this.” He almost begged his grandfather to let him stay but he only took a long breath. “You can trust, Ben in this. I know he was too good but to fix this, he will. I trust him.” But that wasn’t what he want. He wanted to stay and do it for her. “You know I never stop you from doing things even though I can cage you at home, and hire guards to stop you from what you were doing back then but I didn’t. I choose to let you and watch you from afar then fix your mess after you mess up. Nick this is different. Not Constancio, not anyone from our town. I have no power against them. Listen to your grandmother.” He dropped his gaze on him. ‘How I wish I am now eighteen, in my legal age to do what I want.’ He thought. “We’re heading out.” His grandmother entered the room and he looked at her eyes with his most begging eyes. “Lola, you know her right? Fera is innocent, I can’t leave her in that jail. Remember I brought her to our house, the first girl I introduce to you? The girl only dances at my birthday party. It was for her. Please let me stay until she’s vindicated. I want to watch her free herself from those chains before leaving. Promise, I won’t be meddling anymore. I will stay at home. But let me attend her hearing. Please just the hearing until she gets out.”
