CHAPTER 28

Prieto and his junior brother Neku barely have the time to speak to themselves. The boy dread his brother Prieto, sitting comfortably together with him at home for Neku, was out of the question. He is either shy to start a conversation or he just greet him as usual and walk out of the house. At times, when Neku discovered that their mother is not at home and his senior brother is the one in the house, he doesn't come to the house at all. He stay with his friends outside their premises, to avoid any form of confrontation with themselves.
One amongst the things Prieto discovered about his brother is that, he get easily angers and furious when he's triggered. Therefore, Prieto never forced him into his presence in anyway, except the boy choose to come around by himself. Right there, in the parlour of the house was himself, his mother and his junior brother Neku were all eating breakfast together. As they were inside eating, non of them talked. They were only busy with their portion of food.
As Prieto eats, he looked to the direction of his brother to see if he was eating. To his surprise he saw that Neku wasn't even lifting his head up at all as he eat, till the plate of Yam and beans came emptied. He saw that he was really enjoying it all the way. Their mother only talked about, what she intends cooking by the evening, as they eat. Neku finished eating first, despite the fact that he came in lastly, before anyone of them to pick his food. He is a kind of boy that really liked food. Once their mother asked him if she should bring more food, he never hesitate answering her to go ahead and bring it over. Uncountable times, that is what happens.
Neku either request for more, or he eat their mother remaining food if there aren't more to be served. Prieto never said a word, each time Neku comes making more food request from his mother, whenever he eat. He only look away, but not withstanding he get to know his younger brother better. Their mother knowing fully well how Neku does, and when there is no more food in the pot she asked him, if he will like to eat the remaining food she intends to eat, from her own portion, he says she should bring it. This made their mother to always keep remnants from her own portion, whenever Neku was in the house eating together with her.
After they all were done with eating their food, their mother packed the plate from Prieto's table into the bucket, with her own plates and the rest of the plate Neku ate with and took them to the backyard. "Neku before you leave the house, make sure to go wash all the plate o". Their mother will tell him. Knowing his responsibility, he quickly go to the backyard with some water, inside another bucket to wash up the plate. After washing of the plate, Neku disappeared again into the premises of the village.
Prieto only sit in front of the building, on a wooden bench looking at passerby as they keep walking up here, and there at the center of the village road. Sitting where he was, makes him to see some if his relatives and distance friends, he knew from the meeting he had with them at the river side.
Most of the boys were sand jobbers, walking aimlessly around the village once they had nothing doing, or probably looking for a way to get tankers to purchase their hips of sand at the river side. He sight them there, while sitting under the shade casting covering against the scorching sun. Prieto thought about the values of education, knowing this boys were only making ends meet from hardship, because they have no quality education to equip them for a better future. They survive through life doing jobs as risky and unpalatable as this. Diving underwater into the river bed, with an head pan to bring out sand. They do this consecutively, to make a full loaded truck before purchase. A risky attempt it seems but believe me, this boys find pleasure doing it. Sooner than it's expected, one can see this trucks coming into the village, passing through a particular route that leads to the river, to take up the sands this boys hipped for sale. This process takes place all day, therefore it's the duty of this boys to ensure their productivity, if they want to get paid on daily basis. They do the job individually or sometimes in packs with an attempt to share the money. The ones doing it by themselves, never get to deliver on daily basis. It might take them 3 days, meeting a complete targets or more.
Prieto still sat in front of their house, observing more people and their activities at the range of his views. Watching them doing time, they were either walking pass, talking to themselves in packs or selling one thing or the other. His mother came outside the house, dragging pass the bicycle and standing it with it stands. She was preparing to go to the farm. Prieto quarried! "Is the sun not too hot for you, going to the farm at it scorching temperature". His mother replied; I am not doing much, I want to go and harvest the riped peppers in the farm, before rodent made away with them. She rode on the bicycle trying to get it on, by forcing the pedals to wheel the bicycle against the hip of sands on the road, making it difficult for it to get started. She pulled through anyway. It's a normal phenomenon, a thing to get used to. Prieto watched how his mother struggled through, pedaling the bicycle on the gravel.
The sun was outrightly out in it fullest effect, beaming with radiation like the heat from frying oven. Prieto could barely raise his face up at the hotness of the sun, it's reflection was intensely and directly poking his eyes. He had to use his hands to guide the reflection of the sun prying through his face. Without which, he would not be able to see into the distance premises of the village. Inspite, he was still there looking at his mother, as she rode the bicycle to a far distance. She disappeared faintly, into the distance from Prieto's view. "How now bros Dehlee?", One of his relatives saw him from where he was sitting, while walking along. Prieto answered, wavering his hands replying "I dey o".
