CHAPTER 35

He took the spoon and mixed the white rice with the Stew, the oil used in cooking the stew sauce, drenched the tomatoes and pepper to a thick sauce. The food was steaming hot, as Prieto mixed up the grains to reduce the hotness, by letting off the flames. He scooped the food into his mouth, the delicious taste of it made him scoop more, again and again. Prieto kept munching the rice enjoyably. A cup of water had already been placed beside his food by his mother, to quench the effect of pepper in it.
The food was well served in the plates, for proper feeding as usual. Prieto ate to satisfaction, till he finished up all the food that his mother served him. He drank some water, to quench the slight pepperish effect and to settle the food down into his stomach. He felt even more satisfied, at the intake of the water. Prieto stood up from the chair he was sitting in the parlour, he pushed back the table slightly to get the chance to make his way, back to the room while he attends to his luggages with everything he needed to travel with, without any delay. He managed to count #20,000 into his pocket, out of the money he received from his uncle for transportation. He stuck the rest money, back into the underneath pave of the bag and stalk his clothes on it. His NYSC documents, was inside too. Prieto managed a space in the bag, for the extra food his mother made for him, meant for his journey.
He zipped his traveling bag properly, so there won't be any spillage of the food. As he had tightly sealed the lid, placing the plates in a nylon. He hurried to meet his mum at the backyard, to tell her that he is ready to start his journey. "Mummy am set to go", Prieto said. "Am coming", his mother replied him. His mother left what she was doing, to accompany her son to the junction of the street. "Are you with your bag?", She questioned Prieto. "And am sure you are not forgetting anything, both the documents needed for your service and other things?". Prieto nodded I have everything in place. "What about your food?", she asked. Prieto answered, it in the bag. Okay! His mother conclude. Oya! Let me walk you to the Obi-ikolobie junction where you can get a bike to Obiaruku, so you can get a transit car going to Asaba. I believe that is where you can get any transit, to anywhere you are going across the state. Prieto answered that is sure. So they both left. At that moment, Prieto's brother Neku was still sleeping and he never knew when his brother left.
The two of them walked side by side in the cold, the atmosphere was humid so Prieto's mother covered her body region to the chest against the penetrating effect of the cold. Prieto was already warmed up due to the intake of the hot food he ate. So he bothered less at the effect of the harsh weather. His mother was shivering and shaking while he walked next to her son, to the junction of the street where he can easily get a motorcycle, that will covey him to the park going to Asaba. They kept going along till they got to the junction. The two of them waited a while, the express road look very silent, it's was quite early in the morning and the only vehicles moving were the traveling ones, which moved along the express at high speed. Soon enough a motorcycle drived by the road, going to Sapele- Agbor road. Prieto's mother called out for it, Obiaruku! Obiaruku! the motorcyclist slowed down the pace at which it was driving alibg the express and turned.
It came to the lane from the Umukwata, turning to the sides of the Obinomba and approached Prieto's mother. Prieto asked, "how much to the park where I can get a transit to Asaba?". The bike man answered, 200! He asked his mother to hold his traveling bag for him, while he climbed the bike. His mother helped him with that and Prieto jumped on the passengers sit, and collected the bag back from his mother, putting it with the bike man at the front of the motorcycle wheels. As the bike man drove along the route to Obiaruku park, going to Asaba. His mother waved at him with tears on her face, as the bike man drove into the distance. She stood still on the spot where Prieto entered the motorcycle. Prieto could still see her mother at the distance he was, but faintly as the bike man drove off. The speed of the motorcyclist increased in velocity.
The winds collision on them was steady, their clothes flapping against their direction. Prieto sat up looking at his front ahead, the bike man was busy at his job driving intentionally at a calculated speed to the park. In no time, after the bike man climbed about two speed breaker's he arrived at the Obiaruku park. Prieto dropped, handed a #500naira note to the bike man, he stretched his arms to carry his traveling bag, at the front wheel of the motorcycle, where it was placed. He held it firmly with his hands, waiting to collect his #300naira change from the bike man. As the bike man handed the money over, he moved back his motorcycle turning the other way round, and disappeared into the distance. Prieto crossed the road to the side the park was situated, he asked one of the drivers at the park; " I beg where I fit see the motor wey dey go Asaba?". The man he asked pointed to the next trans, a car! A Nissan. Prieto walked close to the place the car was, two passengers were already in.
He liased with the driver, "Is this the next?", he said yes. He asked if he could drop his traveling bag, inside the boot of his car, "yeah! the driver said. So he went to the back of the car and opened, to lift the boot. He dropped his bag and closed the boot. He asked the driver; "How much is the transport fare to Asaba?", the driver who was busy calling out for passengers replied "Bros Asaba na 1k from here". Prieto handed him #1,000naira note. The driver collected it, and Prieto got inside the back sit of the vehicle, which was having a sitter and another at the front, making three passengers with him inclusive. Prieto greeted the one sitting at the back of the car with him, a lady. She looks quite young, like one of those Jambite in Delta State University. Anyway, Prieto stayed put without altering anymore words. His destination to Jos was on his mind, nevertheless the journey he had been anticipating on, just begun so he was excited about the experience.
