Chapter 31 ~ XXX ~
SELENE
"Well, I have seen the birthmark somewhere," Drystan said and we all turned to him, he cleared his throat and began speaking when he realized we were waiting for him to continue speaking, "I think it was in a book about the history of werewolves. I was very young when I read that so I don't know if I remember everything correctly"
He glanced at me when he said that and I immediately shook my head, "just tell us all you remember" I insisted and he continued speaking.
"In the book, the moon goddess created two different creatures as we all know; werewolves, that is the Truebloods and witches, but it isn't common knowledge that there is a third creature, the hybrid. And according to the book, the hybrid is born only when a Trueblood Werewolf and a witch, mate. The mark on you as a child is the mark of a hybrid" we all gasped when he said that and immediately glanced at each other.
"But that's not possible! Everyone here knows that Truebloods detests witches and as far as anyone can recall, there has not been any Trueblood in ages. The last of them were wiped out!" My dad argued and Drystan just shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't know Alpha, it's what I read" he stated and every eye turned towards him.
"Are you trying to say that, I am a hybrid?" I managed to voice out, and he nodded his head. "But like dad said that can't...." I paused mid-sentence the moment I remembered the three girls in my dreams, *"could it be?"* I thought and immediately shook my head, "but there's no other explanation for it" I mumbled to myself, "but there were three me, Eliana, and two others. There's no way I am a hybrid"
"Princess? Is anything wrong?" I heard my dad ask and I snapped out of my thoughts and turned to him with a fake smile on my face.
"It's nothing dad, do you think there's an atom of truth in what Drystan just said?" I asked and shot Drystan an apologetic look, but he smiled at me.
"Well, I think it's true, princess. There's no other explanation for the mark, the moon represents the moon goddess and the werewolves in general, the orbit on the other hand, was a ring with stars dangling on it; that represents the witches. These symbols were joined together as a birthmark on you, darling, I think we have to stick to that theory" he explained thoughtfully and I placed my head on my palms.
I sighed heavily and rubbed my face in circles, "that's a lot to take in, and I don't know what to do or make of the information. Why am I being told all these now? It doesn't make a difference to me" I said and everyone sighed in sympathy, "I'm just going to go to my room, I need to be alone"
I stood up from my chair before anyone could utter any word I ran upstairs to my room, I collapsed on the bed and curled up on my side the moment I laid down. I had told my family that the information didn't make any difference, but the truth was it made a difference, just not a good difference.
It only added more confusion to me, and my list of unanswered questions got even longer, "what are you doing to me, moon goddess! You were never someone I appreciated and I never knew why, but today I think I do" I groaned and smashed my face on my pillow.
"Cursing your maker and blaming her wouldn't make the situation any better," an oddly familiar voice said from behind me, and I immediately turned, and there she was.
Elphaba sat comfortably beside me on the bed with an eerie smile on her face as usual, "please don't smile at me like that, you know it creeps me out" I stated as I sat up from the bed and she rolled her eyes at me.
"I think my smile is beautiful" she retorted
"Whatever floats your boat, Elphaba. I'm not really in the mood for jokes, I have a question for you!" I said and let out a breath before I continued speaking "Why? Why did you suddenly go to my parents and order them to tell me the truth when you know that's only going to add to my confusion? I'm more confused than I've ever been? Why did you go that?" I asked all in one breath and the creepy smile returned.
"I did it all for you, my dearest Selene," she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world, and I raised an eyebrow and pointed my index finger at myself.
"Me? How on Earth was that for me?"
She inched closer to me and grabbed my hand in hers, "remember when you asked for a clue? To at least give you a headstart? Well here it is, I provided you with that! You now know your identity and you know you are a lot more than you imagined, with a clue on where to get searching" she explained and traced soothing circles on my hand.
I stared at our joined hands and then stared at her and shook my head, "you think what you did helpt me, but it didn't, Elphaba. You only added more confusion to my life and I'm still stuck on being a clueless werewolf who lost her wolf and has no clue on how to get her back"
She immediately pulled her hand away from mine and stood up, a glare was now etched on her face as she stared at me, "I didn't take you for a stupid and weak wolf, Selene!" She spat out and I gasped but she didn't stop speaking, "I gave you a clue to your background and who you truly are, I served you that on a platter of gold and the only thing you got out of that was confusion? You got that information and chose to sit in your room and whine all day?"
My eyes widened at her words and I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. She closed her eyes and sighed, "when you finally understand how valuable what you know is, go back to Mooncrest. That's where you were intended to have been all these while" she said and turned her back on me, but then turned again the next moment, "you have only a month and a half to figure this out" she said and I raised my brows "You can't mate with Drystan unless you've figured all this out"
"What?!" I yelled and jumped up from the bed, "what on Earth does that mean? First, I lose my wolf and now I can't mate with my fiancee unless I figure all this bullshit out? Why? Why are you doing this to me?" I yelled but she paid me no mind and disappeared into thin air, just like she came.
My door burst open the very next second, and Drystan came running through the door, "what's wrong? Why are you screaming?" He asked, frantically looking around the room.
"It's nothing, just releasing pent-up frustration" I lied and collapsed on the bed again. He looked at me, and exhaled loudly, then slowly walked to the bed and laid beside me.
He pulled me closer to himself and placed a chaste kiss on my forehead, "it's all going to turn out fine! Okay? You'll figure it all out, I believe you" he assured me and I turned my face towards him.
"You think so?"
"I know so! You'll figure it out better than the boy with five wolves!"
"What?!" I exclaimed and turned my body to fully face him, "a boy with five wolves? How's that possible, which boy's that? Do you know him?"
"There she goes with her questions," he said and placed his hand on his forehead with an exaggerated sigh, I hit his chest playfully and he chuckled, "I do know the boy, everyone in Mooncrest knows the boy and his story. It's a popular story, and I'll tell you all of it when you get all this figured out" he promised and I sulkily placed my head on his chest.
"Why won't you tell me now!" I persisted and he took a long pause before he spoke again.
"That's because it's a long story and the Wolf boy needs time to figure it all out!" He said and I scrunched my face up in confusion but decided not to ask any questions.
We both became silent after that, and in the moment of silence, Elphaba's word resonated over and over again in my head but it didn't make sense to me. "Let's go back to Mooncrest pack tomorrow," I said after giving much thought to her words.
"Why so soon? Wouldn't you like to spend more time with your parents?" Drystan asked immediately and I shook my head
"That's not it, I would love to stay with them but if I am to unravel all these mysteries, I have to return to Mooncrest. It is a huge pack, and it would have all the information I need"
"But this is where you were born"
"No, this is where I was found, and even if I was born here. My pack doesn't have enough information for me, if they did I would have come across it at least once" I said and he sighed in resignation.
