Chapter 13

Sometimes in life we meet to part and part to meet no more. The meeting might be soul-lifting and refreshing, strengthening the already existing bond or it might open up old wounds. The parting between two people on the might be the necessary thing to do at the time as it would be beneficial to both or might be the saddest thing that has ever happened to them. Be that as it may, meeting is inevitable and constant while parting too is same. Twenty children could not stay together and play for twenty years. If death doesn’t strike and separate them, then the circumstances of life will definitely do. That is why we have to be mindful of what we sow in the lives of people. We should ensure sowing good seed and not sour one.
One day, a lady named Mary went to the supermarket to buy some things when she ran into a man. He was her former boyfriend. Circumstances made them to be separated from each other. Mary was wondering if he was the one or not. A voice told her that people looked the same and should therefore ignore. The face she saw might not be that of the person she knew. Another voice came telling her that she should try as there was no crime in doing so. She then went ahead and shouted, “Daniel!”
The man looked back and saw Mary but ignored.
Then Mary went straight to him and said,
“Why are you ignoring me, Daniel? Stop pretending! You are Daniel,” confronted Mary.
“I don’t know what you are talking about, ma’am. Stop embarrassing me,” said Daniel leaving the supermarket in a hurry. He entered his car and zoomed off. Mary wondered why he had to do that if he truly knew he wasn’t Daniel. So, she decided to leave what she was doing and trail the man.
On his way home, he was wondering why Mary didn’t die.
“Who could have saved her? Didn’t I set the whole building ablaze? Is she a ghost or am I dreaming? This must be a dream. I set the whole building ablaze and she was in the building, tied to a chair. What could have happened? Did anybody go and rescue her? If I had known, I would have killed her before setting the building ablaze. Or did one of the servants earlier sacked come back to the house and rescue her afterwards?” worried Daniel. He was restless now – very restless. He got home, fuming. His wife asked him what he wanted to eat.
“Eat what? Are you stupid? Can’t you see I am not in the mood to eat anything? Useless food!” fired Daniel. He wanted to raise his hand and slap the woman as usual but not this time. She held his hand and slapped him three times.
“You slapped me?” asked Daniel.
“Yes! And I will slap you over and over again. How dare you?” threatened the lady. He rushed at her with a view to punching her. She parried it and he hit his head on the wall.
“That serves you right, loser!” mocked the lady. Then he went into their room and emerged with a cutlass.

“What do you think you are doing, dear?” asked the lady.
“To chop off your hand,” answered the horrible man.
“Okay, come, let’s play,” said the lady.

He was approaching her with a view to chopping off her hand but in a quite dramatic manner, the lady seized the cutlass from him. He was shocked, bemuse.d He was wondering where the lady got the skill from.

“Dear, you were not like this before. Where on earth did you acquire all these skills?” asked he.

“I learned Karate in a Chinese Training Centre in town for self defence. You have held me captive for a long time. Enough is enough! If you mess up right now, I will beat you black and blue,” warned the lady.
Someone bashed into their sitting room while they were still talking. Who should this person be but Mary?
“Woman, what are you doing here? What business have I with you?” asked the man fearfully.
“Daniel! Yes, you are Daniel! Stop pretending. I know you too well. No, my eyes aren’t deceiving me!” said Mary.
“Excuse me! Could someone please tell me what is happening here? He isn’t Daniel. He is Romeo!” said Juliet ignorantly.
“Calm down, ma’am. This man here is an imposter, liar, deceiver, armed robber, murderer, arsonist and gangster. He set my building ablaze with me inside. I would have been burned into ashes had it not been for the timely intervention of one of my friends who came around to look for me. He risked his life and saved me. He was able to do so because he heard me shouting for help.
“Why would you want us to believe you, woman? What evidence have you to corroborate what has just been said?” asked Daniel who changed his name to Romeo.
“That isn’t difficult, Daniel! It is all here,” said Mary as she brought out the footage of the arson from her bag. She distanced herself from the two, showing them.
“Romeo! Sorry, Daniel, what do you say to this?” asked Juliet.
“Em...em...em...,” blabbing. He rushed to their room and brought out a firearm.
“Why this, Daniel?” asked Juliet.
“Please don’t shoot. Don’t kill me. For your information, police officers all over Uguru are aware and they are after you. I will advise you, in your own interest, to the nearest police station and own up immediately. As for the footage now with your wife...,” continued Mary.
“Give me the phone now, Juliet or else I will...,” threatened Daniel Romeo.
“Shoot me? Go ahead, animal,” said Juliet.
He shot her and took the video. He pointed the gun at Mary and wanted to shoot her too when gunshot was heard from nowhere. The bullet from the gunshot hit the hand with which he was holding the gun. The gun fell off his hand onto the floor.
“Daniel, why are you so heartless? You ruined my life. Well, you will face the anger of the law. This time, you will pay for all your actions in full. You left Gordon State for Peace Estate after leaving Gordon in bedlam. You have even killed an innocent lady,” said Mary pitying the poor lady.
“I am not dead. I am alive,” said Juliet.
“But how? He shot you, Juliet,” said Mary, very shocked.
“That’s true. I have bullet proof on. I knew that he wasn’t Romeo three months ago. He is not Daniel either. He is Joja from Bolan Region of Uguru. Everything about him has been revealed to me. I only played along in order to lure him into police net. Honestly, I never knew I was living with a notorious criminal,” said Juliet.
“Mary and Juliet, please, forgive me. It was the devil,” pleaded Romeo Daniel Joja as police emerged and arrested him. One of the police who had shot him said,
“You are advised to remain silent because whatever you say here will be used against you in the court of law,” said Mr. Charles.
“Please, don’t to this to me, Mary and Juliet! I love both of you,” claimed Joja.
The ladies burst into laughter.
“Loser!” shouted Juliet.
“We both are losers,” said Joja.
“How?” asked Juliet.
“I have set your documents ablaze. You have no proof of ownership of the property bequeathed to you,” said Joja, boasting.
“You see your life? I can now see how dumb you are. The documents you set ablaze are just few copies of hundreds of copies I have. You are the greatest loser. Yes, you will spend your remaining life in jail or end up in the icy hand of the grim-reaper,” assured Juliet.
Ben emerged and rushed to embrace Juliet to the chagrin of Joja. They started kissing each other when the police took the criminal away. Mary bade Juliet goodbye and drove behind the police van. A new lease of life seemed to have perched on the whole wide world as the nightmare of all in Uguru had been entrapped.
