Chapter 54
Cyndi Uwem is a girl with a hunted past, a girl who has lost it all and a girl with little or nothing to live for. Deceived by the lies of the culture of death that promiscuity can be safe, she’d flaunted her independence and lived waywardly until pregnancy stopped her. So when she’d gotten pregnant at 17 and with no one in particular to pin it on, she had been shattered. Her parents, being strict Christians, insisted she must have the baby. Even her friends, whom she thought would understand, refused to help her abort the pregnancy.
Unable to bear the ridicule, she’d fled the village and hit the big city. There she took to prostitution to make ends meet. However, by the time she raised substantial amount to abort the baby, she found out to her greatest consternation, that the doctors wanted nothing to do with the pregnancy because it was already in an advanced stage. So she had no option but to carry the pregnancy to term. But instead of raising the baby or giving it up for adoption, she’d thrown the baby away, a great mistake that was and an action that has hunted her till date.
However, she ran out of luck when she was accidentally caught in the act by O’Brian’s candid camera. From that day on wards, she became O’Brian’s slave. He made her do anything he wanted without her questioning it and had sex with her whenever and wherever he wanted.
And so for over three years, she remained his slave until a couple of years ago that she was able to break free from his clutches and now here he was again, threatening to ruin her life. She swallowed hard, as she took a stolen look at O’Brian who was keenly watching the trial on TV and she realized sadly she’d bitten off more than she could chew. She shifted her attention to the trial going on in the TV, and she froze up. The defense counsel was haranguing Frankie, making all sorts of ridiculous allegations that irked Cyndi to the point of irritation. She felt for her and wished she could help her.
“I put it to you that you deliberately got pregnant to ruin your father’s political ambition.”
“How could she do such a thing?” Cyndi thought aloud.
“Did you say something?” O’Brian asked.
“I…I …was saying…I was saying we should help her.”
“Help her? How, if I may ask?”
“Don’t you know if you give yourself up, she will win the case?”
“I…I don’t understand what you mean.”
“Please, do be considerate.”
“But you don’t expect me to do that. I mean, how can I just walk in to the police headquarters and tell them I am O’Brian? That will be the end of the road for me.”
“It might be but it wouldn’t.”
“How do you mean?”
“You might get a state pardon or option of bail if you tell the truth. Besides, if Chief wins, you are still at a greater risk.”
“You could be right.”
“Think of it, if Chief picks you up today or any time in the future, he will still kill you because you are a vital witness. You can only be truly free if he is behind bars and only you can guarantee that.”
He thought about what she had said for a moment. Then he said, “I can’t do that. It’ll be suicidal, can’t you see?”
“No, I can’t see anything. I mean, you have to go surrender yourself.”
“I hope you are not threatening me for your own sake,” he warned her.
“You may call it what you like.”
“Oh, so you think you are grown up now to talk back at me?” O’Brian barked. “Well, I don’t blame you. But I can assure you of only one thing, if I go down; you are going down with me.”
Cyndi let out a loud, haunty laughter. “Oh, spare me that. Your threats don’t hold water anymore,” she jeered. “Try it and I’ll tell you what you don’t know.”
“And what’s that?”
“I’ll make you an accessory. I’ll tell them it was your baby and that it was your idea to let her die.” O’Brian opened and closed his mouth. He couldn’t find the right words to convey his feelings. He looked at her with hatred in his eyes for a long moment, sighing disgustingly; he stood up and left the sitting room.
